Abstract

Methods and apparatus for metering media feeds in a market are disclosed. An example method includes determining if a media distribution ambiguity exists for a time period associated with received media metering data, when the media distribution ambiguity does not exist, combining, via a processor, the media metering data with previously received media metering records to generate a first model for media presentation for a first regional network and a second regional network, and when the media distribution ambiguity exists, crediting, via the processor, the first regional network for a first portion of media presentation identified in the media metering data and crediting the second regional network for a second portion of the media presentation based on the first model.

Claims

1. A method to meter media presentation, the method comprising:

determining if a media distribution ambiguity exists for a time period associated with received media metering data;

when the media distribution ambiguity does not exist, combining, via a processor, the media metering data with previously received media metering records to generate a first model for media presentation for a first regional network and a second regional network; and

when the media distribution ambiguity exists, crediting, via the processor, the first regional network for a first portion of media presentation identified in the media metering data and crediting the second regional network for a second portion of the media presentation based on the first model.

A method as defined in claim 1, wherein determining if the media distribution ambiguity exists comprises determining that more than one switching record is identified in switching records associated with a media redistributor that distributes the first regional network and the second regional network.

3. A method as defined in claim 1, wherein the first model indicates a first percentage of time associated with historical presentation of the first regional network and a second percentage of time associated with historical presentation of the second regional network.

4. A method as defined in claim 1, further comprising, when the media distribution ambiguity does not exist, determining a panelist associated with the metering data, wherein the first model is generated for the panelist.

5. A method as defined in claim 1, further comprising, when the media distribution ambiguity exists, determining a panelist associated with the metering data, wherein the first model is based on historical media presentation associated with the panelist.

A method as defined in claim 5, further comprising when the media distribution ambiguity exists, determining that the first model does not include sufficient historical data for analysis, wherein crediting the first regional network for the first portion of the media presentation and crediting the second regional network for the second portion of the media presentation and based on a second model generated for a plurality of panelists.

7. A method as defined in claim 6, wherein the plurality of panelists and the panelist are associated with a same media distribution market.

A method as defined in claim 1, wherein the metering data identifies a number of minutes for presentation of the media and crediting the first regional network for the first portion of the media presentation comprises determining a second number of minutes to be credited to the first regional network based on the first model.

9. An apparatus to meter media presentation, the apparatus comprising:

an ambiguity detector to determine if a media distribution ambiguity exists for a time period associated with received media metering data;

a statistics generator to, when the media distribution ambiguity does not exist, combine the media metering data with previously received media metering records to generate a first model for media presentation for a first regional network and a second regional network;

a media creditor to, when the media distribution ambiguity exists, credit the first regional network for a first portion of media presentation identified in the media metering data and credit the second regional network for a second portion of the media presentation based on the first model.

An apparatus as defined in claim 9, wherein the ambiguity detector is to determine if the media distribution ambiguity exists by determining that more than one switching record is identified in switching records associated with a media redistributor that distributes the first regional network and the second regional network.

11. An apparatus as defined in claim 9, wherein the first model indicates a first percentage of time associated with historical presentation of the first regional network and a second percentage of time associated with historical presentation of the second regional network.

12. An apparatus as defined in claim 9, wherein the statistics generator is further to, when the media distribution ambiguity does not exist, determine a panelist associated with the metering data, the first model being generated for the panelist.

13. An apparatus as defined in claim 9, wherein the media creditor is further to, when the media distribution ambiguity exists, determine a panelist associated with the metering data, the first model being based on historical media presentation associated with the panelist.

14. An apparatus as defined in claim 13, wherein the media creditor is further to, when the media distribution ambiguity exists, determine that the first model does not include sufficient historical data for analysis and to determine information crediting the first regional network for the first portion of the media presentation and crediting the second regional network for the second portion of the media presentation based on a second model generated for a plurality of panelists.

15. An apparatus as defined in claim 14, wherein the plurality of panelists and the panelist are associated with a same media distribution market.

16. An apparatus as defined in claim 9, wherein the metering data identifies a number of minutes for presentation of the media and the media creditor is to credit the first regional network for the first portion of the media presentation by determining a second number of minutes to be credited to the first regional network based on the first model.

17. A tangible computer readable storage medium comprising instructions that, when executed, cause a machine to:

determine if a media distribution ambiguity exists for a time period associated with received media metering data;

when the media distribution ambiguity does not exist, combine the media metering data with previously received media metering records to generate a first model for media presentation for a first regional network and a second regional network; and

when the media distribution ambiguity exists, credit the first regional network for a first portion of media presentation identified in the media metering data and crediting the second regional network for a second portion of the media presentation based on the first model.

A tangible computer readable storage medium as defined in claim 17, wherein the instructions, when executed, cause the machine to determine if the media distribution ambiguity exists by determining that more than one switching record is identified in switching records associated with a media redistributor that distributes the first regional network and the second regional network.

19. A tangible computer readable storage medium as defined in claim 17, wherein the first model indicates a first percentage of time associated with historical presentation of the first regional network and a second percentage of time associated with historical presentation of the second regional network.

20. A tangible computer readable storage medium as defined in claim 17, wherein the instructions, when executed, cause the machine to, when the media distribution ambiguity does not exist, determine a panelist associated with the metering data, wherein the first model is generated for the panelist.

21. A tangible computer readable storage medium as defined in claim 17, wherein the instructions, when executed, cause the machine to, when the media distribution ambiguity exists, determine a panelist associated with the metering data, wherein the first model is based on historical media presentation associated with the panelist.

22. A tangible computer readable storage medium as defined in claim 21, wherein the instructions, when executed, cause the machine to, when the media distribution ambiguity exists, determine that the first model does not include sufficient historical data for analysis, to credit the first regional network for the first portion of the media presentation, and to credit the second regional network for the second portion of the media presentation and based on a second model generated for a plurality of panelists.

23. A tangible computer readable storage medium as defined in claim 22, wherein the plurality of panelists and the panelist are associated with a same media distribution market.

A tangible computer readable storage medium as defined in claim 17, wherein the metering data identifies a number of minutes for presentation of the media and the instructions, when executed, cause the machine to credit the first regional network for the first portion of the media presentation by determining a second number of minutes to be credited to the first regional network based on the first model.
