Abstract

A known fixed relationship is maintained between an external electronic distance measurement accessory and a mobile data collection platform that are physically coupled together. A light beam axis of the external electronic distance measurement accessory is parallel with an optical axis of an entrance pupil of the mobile data collection platform. The external electronic distance measurement accessory integrates with the mobile data collection platform. The external electronic distance measurement accessory receives control instructions from the mobile data collection platform.

Claims

1. A method of determining a distance, wherein the method comprises:

maintaining a known fixed relationship between an external electronic distance measurement accessory in a first package and a mobile data collection platform in a second package, wherein the first package and the second package are separate packages that are physically coupled together;

receiving, at the external electronic distance measurement accessory, principal control instructions from the mobile data collection platform;

transmitting a light beam from a transmit light source, wherein the transmit light source is part of the external electronic distance measurement accessory and wherein an axis of the light beam is parallel with an optical axis of an entrance pupil of the mobile data collection platform;

receiving a reflected portion of the light beam at a receiving aperture, wherein the receiving aperture is part of the external electronic distance measurement accessory; and

determining a distance measurement based on a time that the light beam that was transmitted and a time that the reflected portion of the light beam was received.

2. The method as recited by claim 1, wherein the receiving, at the external electronic distance measurement accessory, of the principal control instructions from the mobile data collection platform further comprises:

receiving the principal control instructions that include at least one of an instruction that controls an external electronic distance measurement accessory, an instruction that controls an external image capturing device accessory, an instruction that controls an external laser pointer accessory, an instruction that controls an external Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) raw observable provider, an instruction requesting that the external Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) raw observable provider transmit external raw observables to the mobile data collection platform, and an instruction requesting that the external electronic distance measurement accessory transmits data to the mobile data collection platform.

3. The method as recited by claim 1 further comprises:

altering a path of the reflected portion of the light beam inside the external electronic distance measurement accessory by reflecting the reflected portion of the light beam with a mirror that is part of the external electronic distance measurement accessory, wherein the reflected portion includes a first reflected subset that travels the path prior to the reflecting with the mirror and a second reflected subset that travels the path after the reflecting with the mirror.

4. The method as recited by claim 3 further comprises:

providing a focused second reflected subset by focusing the second reflected subset with a lens of the external electronic distance measurement accessory; and

detecting the focused second reflected subset with a light sensor of the external electronic distance measurement accessory.

5. The method as recited by claim 1:

wherein the receiving, at the external electronic distance measurement accessory, of the control instructions from the mobile data collection platform, further comprises receiving, at the external electronic distance measurement accessory, a request, from the mobile data collection platform, for the distance measurement; and

wherein the method further comprises communicating the distance measurement from the external electronic distance measurement accessory to the mobile data collection platform, wherein the determining of the distance measurement and the communicating of the distance measurement are performed in response to the receiving of the request.

6. The method as recited by claim 5, wherein the receiving of the request and the communicating of the distance measurement further comprise:

receiving the request and communicating of the distance measurement performed by a communication device that is part of the external electronic distance measurement accessory, wherein the communication device is selected from a group consisting of a wireless communication device and a wired access communication device.

7. An external electronic distance measurement accessory for providing data to a mobile data collection platform, wherein the external electronic distance measurement accessory comprises:

a front side of the external electronic distance measurement accessory includes a transmit light source and a receiving aperture;

a back side of the external electronic distance measurement accessory is on an opposite side of the front side and the back side is parallel to the front side of the external electronic distance measurement accessory;

a fastener system that couples the back side of the external electronic distance measurement accessory to a front side of the mobile data collection platform, wherein the front side of the mobile data collection platform includes an entrance pupil and the fastener system maintains a known fixed relationship between the external electronic distance measurement accessory in a first package and the mobile data collection platform in a second package, wherein the first package and the second package are separate packages that are physically coupled together;

receive-request-for-information-logic that receives a request, from the mobile data collection platform, for a distance measurement;

a transmit light source that transmits a light beam, wherein an axis of the light beam is parallel with an optical axis of the entrance pupil of the mobile data collection platform;

the receiving aperture that receives a reflected portion of the light beam;

a time-of-flight-distance-calculator that determines the distance measurement based on a time that the light beam was transmitted by the transmit light source and a time that the reflected portion was received by the receiving aperture; and

requested-information-providing-logic that communicates the distance measurement to the mobile data collection platform.

8. The external electronic distance measurement accessory of claim 7, wherein the external electronic distance measurement accessory further comprises:

a lens that focuses the reflected portion; and

a light sensor that detects the focused reflected portion.

9. The external electronic distance measurement accessory of claim 7, wherein the external electronic distance measurement accessory further comprises:

a communication device that communicates with the mobile data collection platform, wherein the communication device is selected from a group consisting of a wireless communication device and a wired access communication device.

10. The external electronic distance measurement accessory of claim 7, wherein a principal axis of the mobile data collection platform is parallel with a principal axis of the external electronic distance measurement accessory.

11. The external electronic distance measurement accessory of claim 7, wherein the external electronic distance measurement accessory does not cover any portion the entrance pupil of the mobile data collection platform when the external electronic distance measurement accessory is coupled with the mobile data collection platform.

12. The external electronic distance measurement accessory of claim 11, wherein the external electronic distance measurement accessory has a cut out portion that exposes the entrance pupil of the mobile data collection platform when the external electronic distance measurement accessory and the mobile data collection platform are coupled with each other.

13. The external electronic distance measurement accessory of claim 7, wherein the back side of the external electronic distance measurement accessory is a largest face of the external electronic distance measurement accessory and a front side of the mobile data collection platform is a largest face of the mobile data collection platform, wherein the entrance pupil is located on the front side of the mobile data collection platform.

14. The external electronic distance measurement accessory of claim 13, wherein the largest face of the external electronic distance measurement accessory is smaller than the largest face of the mobile data collection platform.

15. The external electronic distance measurement accessory of claim 7, wherein the external electronic distance measurement accessory includes a mirror that alters a path of the reflected portion.

16. The external electronic distance measurement accessory of claim 15, wherein the reflected portion includes a first reflected subset and a second reflected subset, the first reflected subset travels the path prior to the reflected portion being reflected by the mirror and the second reflected subset travels the path after the reflected is reflected by the mirror and the first reflected subset is at a 90 degree angle with respect to the second reflected subset.

17. An external electronic distance measurement accessory for providing data to a mobile data collection platform, wherein the external electronic distance measurement accessory comprises:

maintaining means that maintains a known fixed relationship between the external electronic distance measurement accessory in a first package and the mobile data collection platform in a second package, wherein the first package and the second package are separate packages that are physically coupled together;

integrating means that provides a light beam axis of the external electronic distance measurement accessory that is parallel with an optical axis of an entrance pupil of the mobile data collection platform;

controlling means that receives control instructions from the mobile data collection platform;

transmitting means that transmits a light beam from a transmit light source along the light beam axis;

receiving means that receives a reflected portion of the light beam; and

determining means that determines a distance measurement based on a time that the light beam was transmitted by the transmitting means and a time that the reflected portion was received by the receiving means.

18. The external electronic distance measurement accessory as recited by claim 17, wherein the external electronic distance measurement accessory further comprises:

focusing means that focuses the reflected portion; and

detecting means that detects the focused reflected portion.

19. The external electronic distance measurement accessory as recited by claim 17, wherein the external electronic distance measurement accessory further comprises:

receiving means that receives, at the external electronic distance measurement accessory, a request, from the mobile data collection platform, for the distance measurement; and

communicating means that communicates the distance measurement from the external electronic distance measurement accessory to the mobile data collection platform.

20. The external electronic distance measurement accessory as recited by claim 19, wherein the receiving means and the communicating means are part of the external electronic distance measurement accessory, wherein the receiving means and the communicating means are selected from a group consisting of a wireless communication means and a wired access communication means.

21. The external electronic distance measurement accessory as recited by claim 17, wherein the integrating means further comprises:

positioning means that positions the external electronic distance measurement accessory with respect to the mobile data collection platform in a manner that the light beam axis of the external electronic distance measurement accessory is parallel with the optical axis of the entrance pupil of the mobile data collection platform.

22. The external electronic distance measurement accessory as recited by claim 17, the external electronic distance measurement accessory further comprises:

altering means that alters a path of the reflected portion inside the external electronic distance measurement accessory by reflecting the reflected portion, wherein the altering means is part of the external electronic distance measurement accessory.

23. The external electronic distance measurement accessory as recited by claim 17, wherein the integrating means further comprises:

coupling means that couples the external electronic distance measurement accessory with the mobile data collection platform.

24. The external electronic distance measurement accessory as recited by claim 23, wherein the coupling means is a bracket.
