Abstract

A surgical instrument system can comprise a surgical instrument, a first end effector, and a second end effector, wherein the end effectors are attachable to the surgical instrument. The first end effector can comprise a first set of stored data pertaining to the first end effector, wherein the surgical instrument is configured to ascertain the first set of data and enter a first operating state. The second end effector can comprise a second set of stored data pertaining to the second end effector, wherein the surgical instrument is configured to ascertain the second set of data and enter a second operating state. The surgical instrument is further configured to enter a default operating state if said surgical instrument is unable to ascertain a set of stored data from an end effector.

Claims

1. A surgical instrument system, comprising:

a surgical instrument;

a first end effector attachable to said surgical instrument, wherein said first end effector comprises a first set of stored data regarding a first set of end effector parameters pertaining to said first end effector, and wherein said surgical instrument is configured to ascertain said first set of data and enter a first operating state after ascertaining said first set of stored data; and

a second end effector attachable to said surgical instrument, wherein said second end effector comprises a second set of stored data regarding a second set of end effector parameters pertaining to said second end effector, wherein said surgical instrument is configured to ascertain said second set of data and enter a second operating state after ascertaining said second set of stored data, and wherein said surgical instrument is configured to enter a default operating mode if said surgical instrument is unable to ascertain a set of stored data from an end effector.

2. The surgical instrument system of claim 1, wherein said first end effector comprises a first wireless transmitter configured to transmit a first signal incorporating said first set of data, wherein said second end effector comprises a second wireless transmitter configured to transmit a second signal incorporating said second of data, and wherein said surgical instrument comprises a receiver configured to receive said first signal and said second signal.

3. The surgical instrument system of claim 1, wherein said surgical instrument further comprises:

a firing member;

a motor configured to drive said firing member; and

a battery configured to supply power to said motor, wherein said first set of data from said first end effector includes at least one motor operating parameter, and wherein said surgical instrument is configured to utilize said at least one motor operating parameter to operate said motor.

4. The surgical instrument system of claim 3, wherein said at least one motor operating parameter comprises an instruction to limit the power that said battery can supply to said motor.

5. The surgical instrument system of claim 3, wherein said at least one motor operating parameter comprises an instruction to limit the speed of said motor.

The surgical instrument system of claim 3, wherein said first set of data from said first end effector includes at least one first motor operating parameter, wherein said second set of data from said second end effector includes at least one second motor operating parameter, and wherein said surgical instrument is configured to utilize said at least one first motor operating parameter or said at least one second motor operating parameter to operate said motor.

The surgical instrument system of claim 6, wherein said at least one first motor operating parameter comprises an instruction to limit the power that said battery can supply to said motor to a first power, and wherein said at least one second motor operating parameter comprises an instruction to limit the power that said battery can supply to said motor to a second power.

8. The surgical instrument system of claim 7, wherein said default operating mode limits the power that said battery can supply to said motor to a default power.

9. The surgical instrument system of claim 8, wherein said default power is less than said first power and said second power.

10. The surgical instrument system of claim 6, wherein said at least one first motor operating parameter comprises an instruction to limit the speed of said motor to a first speed, and wherein said at least one second motor operating parameter comprises an instruction to limit the speed of said motor to a second speed.

11. The surgical instrument system of claim 10, wherein said default operating mode limits the speed of said motor to a default speed.

12. The surgical instrument system of claim 11, wherein said default speed is less than said first speed and said second speed.

13. The surgical instrument system of claim 1, wherein an end effector must be attached to said surgical instrument to enter said default operating mode.

14. The surgical instrument system of claim 13, wherein said instrument comprises a shaft, wherein said first end effector and said second end effector are selectively attachable to said shaft, and wherein said surgical instrument further comprises a sensor configured to detect whether an end effector is attached to said shaft.

15. The surgical instrument system of claim 1, wherein said surgical instrument further comprises:

a firing member; and

a motor configured to drive said firing member a distance, wherein said first set of data includes a first stroke length parameter, wherein said second set of data includes a second stroke length parameter, and wherein said surgical instrument is configured to utilize said first stroke length parameter or said second stroke length parameter to move said firing member said distance.

16. The surgical instrument system of claim 15, wherein said surgical instrument is configured to move said firing member a default distance when said surgical instrument is in said default operating condition.

17. The surgical instrument system of claim 1, wherein said first end effector comprises a first movable end and a first articulation joint, wherein said first movable end is movable within a first range of motion about said first articulation joint, wherein said end effector comprises a second movable end and a second articulation joint, wherein said second end is movable within a second range of motion about said second articulation joint, and wherein said surgical instrument is configured to utilize said first range of motion to limit the articulation of said first movable end about said first articulation joint or utilize said second range of motion to limit the articulation of said second movable end about said second articulation joint.

18. The surgical instrument system of claim 17, wherein said surgical instrument comprises an articulation motor for articulating a movable end of an end effector attached to said surgical instrument, and wherein said articulation motor is not actuatable when said surgical instrument is in said default operating condition.

19. The surgical instrument system of claim 1, wherein said surgical instrument comprises a controller, wherein said controller is configured to assess whether a datum is missing from said first set of data, wherein said controller is configured to assess whether a datum is missing from said second set of data, and wherein said controller is configured to place said surgical instrument in said default operating mode in the event a datum is missing.

20. A surgical instrument system, comprising:

a surgical instrument comprising an operating system;

a first end effector attachable to said surgical instrument, wherein said first end effector comprises a first set of stored parameters pertaining to said first end effector, and wherein said surgical instrument is configured to obtain said first set of parameters and place said operating system in a first operating state; and

a second end effector attachable to said surgical instrument, wherein said second end effector comprises a second set of stored parameters pertaining to said second end effector, wherein said surgical instrument is configured to obtain said second set of parameters and place said operating system in a second operating state, and wherein said operating system is configured to enter a default operating mode if said surgical instrument is unable to ascertain a set of stored parameters from an end effector.

21. A surgical instrument system, comprising:

a surgical instrument comprising a controller;

an end effector attachable to said surgical instrument, wherein said first end effector comprises a set of stored parameters pertaining to said end effector, and wherein said controller is configured to access said parameters.

22. A surgical instrument system, comprising:

a surgical instrument comprising a controller; and

an end effector, wherein said controller is configured to implement a first operating program if said controller can identify said end effector, and wherein said controller is configured to implement a second operating program if said controller cannot identify said end effector.
