Abstract

A multi-layer through air dried tissue including a first exterior layer comprised substantially of hardwood fibers, an interior layer comprised substantially of softwood fibers, and a second exterior layer comprised substantially of hardwood fibers. The interior layer includes a first wet end additive comprising an ionic surfactant and a second wet end additive comprising a non-ionic surfactant.

Claims

1. A multi-layer through air dried tissue comprising:

a first exterior layer comprised substantially of hardwood fibers;

an interior layer comprised substantially of softwood fibers; and

a second exterior layer comprised substantially of hardwood fibers, wherein the interior layer includes;

a first wet end additive comprising an ionic surfactant; and

a second wet end additive comprising a non-ionic surfactant.

2. The tissue of claim 1 wherein the first exterior layer further comprises a wet end temporary wet strength additive.

3. The tissue of claim 1 wherein the second exterior layer further comprises a wet end dry strength additive.

4. The tissue of claim 1 wherein the first exterior layer further comprises a wet end dry strength additive.

5. The tissue of claim 1 wherein the first wet end additive comprises an ethoxylated vegetable oil.

6. The tissue of claim 1 wherein the ratio by weight of the second wet end additive to the first wet end additive in the tissue is at least eight to one.

7. The tissue of claim 6 wherein the ratio by weight of the second wet end additive to the first wet end additive in the first interior layer is at most ninety to one.

8. The tissue of claim 1 having a softness of at least 90.

9. The tissue of claim 1 having a bulk softness of less than 10 TS7.

10. The tissue of claim 1 wherein the ionic surfactant comprises a debonder.

11. The tissue of claim 5, wherein the first wet end additive comprises a combination of ethoxylated vegetable oils.

12. The tissue of claim 1 having a tensile strength of at least 35 N/m, a softness of at least 90 and a basis weight of less than 25 gsm.

13. The tissue of claim 1 having a tensile strength of at least 35 N/m, a softness of at least 90 and a caliper of less than 650 microns.

14. The tissue of claim 2 wherein the wet end temporary wet strength additive comprises glyoxalated polyacrylamide.

15. The tissue of claim 3 wherein the wet end dry strength additive comprises amphoteric starch.

16. The tissue of claim 4 wherein the wet end dry strength additive comprises amphoteric starch.

17. The tissue of claim 2 wherein the second exterior layer further comprises a wet end dry strength additive.

18. The tissue of claim 17 wherein the wet end temporary wet strength additive comprises glyoxalated polyacrylamide and the wet end dry strength additive comprises amphoteric starch.

19. The tissue of claim 1 wherein the first exterior layer is comprised of at least 75% by weight of hardwood fibers.

20. The tissue of claim 1 wherein the interior layer is comprised of at least 75% by weight of softwood fibers.

21. The tissue of claim 2 wherein the second exterior layer further comprises a temporary wet strength additive.

22. The tissue of claim 2 wherein the second exterior layer further comprises a dry strength additive.

23. The tissue of claim 2 wherein the first exterior layer further comprises a dry strength additive.

24. The tissue of claim 1 wherein the first and second exterior layers are substantially free of any surface deposited softener agents or lotions.

25. The tissue of claim 1 wherein at least one of the first or second exterior layers comprises a surface deposited softener agent or lotion.

26. The tissue of claim 1 having a softness of at least 95.

27. The tissue of claim 1 wherein the non-ionic surfactant has a hydrophilic-lipophilic balance of less than 10.

28. A multi-layer tissue comprising an outer surface having an Average Peak to Valley Waviness of 140 or less.

29. The multi-layer tissue of claim 28, wherein the outer surface has a Waviness Uniformity of 27 or less.

30. The multi-layer tissue of claim 28, wherein the outer surface has an Average Primary Amplitude of 50 or less.

31. The multi-layer tissue of claim 28, wherein the outer surface has an Amplitude Uniformity of 8 or less.
