1. A method, implemented by a controller of a battery management system in a healthcare delivery system, of managing one or more batteries in the healthcare delivery system when the healthcare delivery system is not drawing power from a power supply other than the one or more batteries, the method comprising:

  • determining when the healthcare delivery system is drawing power from the one or more batteries;

    controlling a display unit coupled to the controller to display an initial number corresponding to a time remaining on battery (TROB) when the healthcare delivery system is drawing power from the one or more batteries;

    determining if the TROB is within a reserve range extending up to a reserve range maximum, the reserve range maximum being less than a maximum TROB;

    changing the TROB according to an operational state of the healthcare delivery system if the TROB is greater than the reserve range maximum; and

    decreasing the TROB to count down the TROB without regard for the operational state of the healthcare delivery system if the TROB is less than the reserve range maximum.
