Abstract
A piece of buttress material and an end-effector of a surgical instrument including features which can aid a surgeon in properly and quickly attaching the piece of buttress material to the end-effector. In various embodiments, a piece of buttress material can include retention features which can be engaged with portions of an end-effector to releasably retain the piece of buttress material to at least a portion of the end-effector. Similarly, an end-effector can include features configured to engage portions of a piece of buttress material to releasably retain the piece of buttress material to the end-effector. In at least one embodiment, more than one piece of buttress material can be releasably retained to an end-effector.

a housing; an end effector being secured to said housing, said end effector comprising; a first jaw assembly comprising a plurality of fastener retaining slots; and a second jaw assembly comprising a plurality of fastener forming pockets; wherein at least one of said first jaw assembly and said second jaw assembly comprises a tissue supporting surface, and wherein at least one of said first jaw assembly and said second jaw assembly comprises a plurality of recesses formed in said tissue supporting surface; a plurality of fasteners positioned within said fastener retaining slots of said first jaw assembly, wherein said plurality of fasteners are configured and dimensioned to be formed by said fastener forming pockets of said second jaw assembly; and a surgical buttress, comprising; a body comprising a plurality of projections extending therefrom, wherein said projections are integrally formed with said body, wherein said projections are relatively positioned on said body for insertion into said plurality of recesses to secure said surgical buttress to at least one of said first jaw assembly and said second jaw assembly, and wherein said body is configured and dimensioned to substantially overlie at least one of; at least some of said fastener retaining slots of said first jaw assembly; and at least some of said fastener forming pockets of said second jaw assembly. - View Dependent Claims (31, 32, 33)
