1. A charging module for a battery charging system, said module comprising:
- a charging surface for receiving a secondary module for charging an electronic device;
a plurality of transformer windings formed in a multilayer structure comprising at least two layers, the multilayer structure positioned beneath the charging surface, each of the transformer windings being substantially parallel to the charging surface, each of the layers comprising at least one transformer winding, a transformer winding of a second of the layers being offset relative to a transformer winding of a first of the layers; and
a charging circuit in a housing not including the charging surface or the multilayer structure, the charging circuit electrically coupled to the transformer windings.

Abstract
There is provided a planar inductive battery charging system designed to enable electronic devices to be recharged. The system includes a planar charging module having a charging surface on which a device to be recharged is placed. Within the charging module and parallel to the charging surface is at least one and preferably an array of primary windings that couple energy inductively to a secondary winding formed in the device to be recharged. The invention also provides secondary modules that allow the system to be used with conventional electronic devices not formed with secondary windings.
