Abstract

A wireless communications device has network interfaces for accessing cellular data networks and Wi-Fi wireless local area networks. Wi-Fi offload allows data traffic to be moved away from the cellular network to the Wi-Fi network. To avoid any existing data sessions being broken during offload, Proxy Mobile IP (PMIP) must be supported by a Wi-Fi access point and associated Mobile Access Gateway. After Wi-Fi association and authentication, the wireless communication device probes the access point and MAG to determine whether PMIP is supported.

Claims

1. A method of determining whether an access point in a wireless communications network is capable of providing network mobility to data sessions, the method comprising a wireless communication device having at least two wireless communications network interfaces, performing the steps of:

connecting to the access point; and

accessing network mobility data relating to the access point by;

sending a capability discovery message to the access point; and

processing a response received from the access point,

wherein the response contains an indication of whether network mobility is available to the wireless communication device.

2. A method according to claim 1 wherein the network mobility data is received from a mobile access gateway in the form of a Router Advertisement message.

3. A method according to claim 1 further comprising sending the identity of the wireless communications device to an AAA server, the AAA server stores per user policy information relating to whether the wireless communications device is authorised to use network mobility services.

4. A method according to claim 1 where the network mobility data is received from a DHCP server.

5. A method according to claim 1 wherein the network mobility is performed in accordance with the PMIP standard.

6. A method according to any claim 1, wherein updated network mobility data is delivered to the wireless communications device whenever a change in the access point occurs.

7. A method according to any claim 1 wherein wireless communication device comprises a cellular network interface and a Wi-Fi access network, and wherein the network mobility is between a cellular access network and a Wi-Fi access network.

8. A method according to claim 1, wherein the network mobility data further comprises an indication of whether flow mobility is supported.

9. A method according to claim 1 wherein the at least two network interfaces are bonded as a single virtual network interface in accordance with the network mobility data.

10. A wireless communications device for determining whether an access point in a wireless communications network is capable of providing network mobility to data sessions, comprising:

at least two wireless communications network interfaces;

means for connecting to the access point; and

accessing means for accessing network mobility data relating to the access point by;

sending a capability discovery message to the access point; and

processing a response received from the access point,

wherein the response contains an indication of whether network mobility is available to the wireless communication device.

A wireless communications device according to claim 10 further comprising sending means for sending the identity of the wireless communications device to an AAA server, the AAA server storing per user policy information relating to whether the wireless communications device is authorised to use network mobility services.

12. A wireless communications device according to claim 10, wherein the at least two wireless communications network interfaces comprises a cellular network interface and a Wi-Fi access network, and wherein the network mobility is between a cellular access network and a Wi-Fi access network.

13. A wireless communications device according to claim 10 wherein the at least two network interfaces are bonded as a single virtual network interface in accordance with the network mobility data.
