Abstract

An expiring balance may be provided to a user account that the user can spend or pass along to a friend. The user may be given a limited time in which to spend the expiring balance after which the balance will not be available to the user. When the user decides to pass the balance along to a friend, an expiration time associated with the expiring balance may be reset. The expiring balance may be redeemed at participating locations and, if a location is not participating, the user may be able to notify an entity providing the expiring balance of the non-participation.

Claims

1. A system, comprising:

one or more processors configured to;

add an expiring balance to an account associated with a user;

determine when the balance has expired and subtract the expiring balance from the account when the balance has expired;

determine when the user is requesting to process a payment using the expiring balance and process the payment and subtract the expiring balance from the account when the user requests to process a payment using the expiring balance;

determine when the user is sending a notification including merchant information for a merchant that will not accept the expiring balance as a payment and store the merchant information when the user sends the notification; and

determine when the user is requesting to pass the expiring balance on to a friend; and

a memory coupled to the one or more processors and configured to store the account associated with the user and the merchant information.

The system of claim 1, wherein the one or more processors are configured to determine when the friend has an account stored in the memory when the user requests to send the expiring balance along to the friend, and, when the friend is not a registered user, the one or more processors are further configured to:

send a registration request to the friend;

create a user account based on user information provided by the friend in response to the sent registration request; and

store the user information provided by the friend in the memory.

3. The system of claim 2, wherein the one or more processors are further configured to add the expiring balance to the created user account associated with the friend.

4. The system of claim 3, further comprising a network interface device configured to receive the request to process payments, the notification including merchant information, and the user information, and send the registration request and a notification to at least the user that the expiring balance has been added to their account.

5. The system of claim 1, wherein the memory comprises one or more databases.

6. The system of claim 1, wherein the system comprises a payment processor server.

7. The system of claim 3, wherein the one or more processors are further configured to:

determine when the friend sends a thank you to the user for the expiring balance; and

send a thank you notification to the user.

8. The system of claim 1, wherein the one or more processors are further configured to:

determine a location of the user; and

add the expiring balance to the account associated with the user based on the determined location.

9. The system of claim 1, wherein the one or more processors determine the location of the user based on at least one of a received location component, a geofence, and a user check in at a location.

10. A computer-readable medium including instructions that, when executed by one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to perform a method comprising:

adding an expiring balance to an account associated with a user;

subtracting the expiring balance from the account when the balance has expired;

processing the payment and subtracting the expiring balance from the account when the user requests to process a payment using the expiring balance;

sending a notification including merchant information for a merchant that will not accept the expiring balance as a payment and storing the merchant information when the user sends the notification; and

determining when the user is requesting to pass the expiring balance along to a friend.

11. The computer-readable medium of claim 10, further comprising:

determining when the friend has an account stored in the memory when the user requests to pass the expiring balance along to the friend;

sending a registration request to the friend when the friend is not a registered user;

creating a user account based on user information provided by the friend in response to the sent registration request; and

storing the user information provided by the friend.

12. The computer-readable medium of claim 11, further comprising adding the expiring balance to the created user account associated with the friend.

13. The computer-readable medium of claim 11, further comprising:

determining when the friend sends a thank you to the user for the expiring balance; and

sending a thank you notification to the user.

14. The computer-readable medium of claim 10, further comprising:

determining a location of the user; and

adding the expiring balance to the account associated with the user based on the determined location.

15. The computer-readable medium of claim 10, wherein determining the location of the user comprises determining the location based on at least one of a received location component, a geofence, and a user check in at a location.

16. A computer-readable medium including instructions that, when executed by one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to perform a method comprising:

receiving a notification of a received expiring balance;

sending friend information when the expiring balance is sent to a friend;

displaying a list of nearby merchants;

sending merchant information when a merchant does not accept the expiring balance; and

sending payment information when spending the expiring balance.

17. The computer-readable medium of claim 16, wherein receiving the notification of the received expiring balance comprises receiving at least one of a short messaging service (SMS) message, an e-mail, and a push notification.

18. The computer-readable medium of claim 16, wherein sending the friend information comprises sending at least one of a phone number of the friend and an e-mail address of the friend.

19. The computer-readable medium of claim 16, wherein sending the merchant information comprises sending at least one of a merchant name and a merchant location.

20. The computer-readable medium of claim 16, wherein the sending payment information comprises sending a credential associated with an account having the expiring balance.

21. The computer-readable medium of claim 16, wherein displaying a list of nearby merchants comprises:

receiving a selection to spend the expiring balance;

sending current GPS coordinates to a server;

receiving a list of nearby merchants; and

displaying the list of nearby merchants.

22. The computer-readable medium of claim 21, wherein receiving the list of nearby merchants comprises receiving the list of nearby merchants that accept the expiring balance.

23. The computer-readable medium of claim 16, wherein receiving the notification of the expiring balance comprises:

providing a location; and

receiving the notification of the expiring balance based on the location.

24. The computer-readable medium of claim 23, wherein providing a location comprises at least one of providing a location component, entering a geofenced area, and checking into a location.

25. The computer-readable medium of claim 24, wherein providing a location comprises checking into a location, and checking into a location comprises checking into the location using a Bluetooth®

low energy (BLE) communications protocol.
