Abstract
A system for utilizing metadata created either at a central location for shared use by connected users, or at each individual user'"'"'s location, to enhance user'"'"'s enjoyment of available broadcast programming content. A variety of mechanisms are employed for automatically and manually identifying and designating programming segments, associating descriptive metadata which the identified segments, distributing the metadata for use at client locations, and using the supplied metadata to selectively record and playback desired programming.

13. A method of processing digital video using at least one computer, the method comprising:

receiving at a computer of the at least one computer first digital video; generating at a computer of the at least one computer metadata regarding said first digital video, said metadata identifying a splice point that demarks a segment of said first digital video; and electronically transmitting said first digital video via a wide area network; electronically transmitting said metadata to a destination via a wide area network; wherein said metadata includes instructions adapted for use by the destination in automatically substituting second digital video for said segment at the splice point of said first digital video. - View Dependent Claims (14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19)
