Abstract

A method includes receiving first data from multiple wireless field devices at a remote terminal unit. The first data is received using multiple wireless communication protocols. The method also includes executing control logic at the remote terminal unit in order to control at least part of an industrial process. The method further includes communicating second data to the wireless field devices from the remote terminal unit. The second data is transmitted using the multiple wireless communication protocols. In addition, the method includes communicating at the remote terminal unit with a control system, where the remote terminal unit is at least partially controlled by the control system.

Claims

1. A method comprising:

receiving first data from multiple wireless field devices at a remote terminal unit, the first data received using multiple wireless communication protocols;

executing control logic at the remote terminal unit in order to control at least part of an industrial process;

communicating second data to the wireless field devices from the remote terminal unit, the second data transmitted using the multiple wireless communication protocols; and

communicating at the remote terminal unit with a control system, the remote terminal unit at least partially controlled by the control system.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

managing wireless resources in multiple wireless networks using the remote terminal unit, the multiple wireless networks associated with the multiple wireless communication protocols.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein managing the wireless resources comprises configuring the wireless networks to synchronize wireless communications with execution of one or more control algorithms by the remote terminal unit.

4. The method of claim 2, wherein managing the wireless resources comprises using an ISA100.11a system manager and a Wireless Highway Addressable Remote Transducer (WirelessHART) network manager at the remote terminal unit.

5. The method of claim 4, wherein:

receiving the first data and communicating the second data comprises using multiple communication stacks, each communication stack associated with one of the wireless communication protocols; and

using the multiple communication stacks comprises communicating via a first of the communication stacks using the ISA100.11a system manager and communicating via a second of the communication stacks using the WirelessHART network manager.

6. The method of claim 4, further comprising:

distributing wireless security keys to the ISA100.11a system manager and the WirelessHART network manager using a security manager at the remote terminal unit.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein communicating with the control system comprises:

storing third data being communicated between the remote terminal unit and the control system in a runtime data cache.

8. An apparatus comprising a remote terminal unit, the remote terminal unit comprising:

at least one first interface configured to receive first data from multiple wireless field devices using multiple wireless communication protocols;

at least one processing device configured to execute control logic in order to control at least part of an industrial process; and

at least one second interface configured to communicate with a control system, the remote terminal unit configured to be at least partially controlled by the control system;

wherein the at least one first interface is also configured to communicate second data to the wireless field devices using the multiple wireless communication protocols.

9. The apparatus of claim 8, wherein the at least one processing device is further configured to manage wireless resources in multiple wireless networks, the multiple wireless networks associated with the multiple wireless communication protocols.

10. The apparatus of claim 9, wherein the at least one processing device is configured to manage the wireless resources in order to configure the wireless networks to synchronize wireless communications with execution of one or more control algorithms by the remote terminal unit.

11. The apparatus of claim 9, wherein the at least one processing device is configured to implement an ISA100.11a system manager and a Wireless Highway Addressable Remote Transducer (WirelessHART) network manager.

12. The apparatus of claim 11, wherein:

the remote terminal unit supports multiple communication stacks, each communication stack associated with one of the wireless communication protocols;

the ISA100.11a system manager is configured to communicate via a first of the communication stacks; and

the WirelessHART network manager is configured to communicate via a second of the communication stacks.

13. The apparatus of claim 11, wherein the at least one processing device is configured to implement a security manager configured to distribute wireless security keys to the ISA100.11a system manager and the WirelessHART network manager.

14. The apparatus of claim 8, further comprising:

a memory including a runtime data cache configured to store third data communicated between the remote terminal unit and the control system.

15. A non-transitory computer readable medium embodying a computer program, the computer program comprising computer readable program code for:

receiving first data from multiple wireless field devices at a remote terminal unit using multiple wireless communication protocols;

executing control logic at the remote terminal unit in order to control at least part of an industrial process;

initiating communication of second data to the wireless field devices from the remote terminal unit using the multiple wireless communication protocols; and

initiating communication at the remote terminal unit with a control system, the remote terminal unit configured to be at least partially controlled by the control system.

16. The computer readable medium of claim 15, wherein the computer program further comprises computer readable program code for:

managing wireless resources in multiple wireless networks using the remote terminal unit, the multiple wireless networks associated with the multiple wireless communication protocols.

17. The computer readable medium of claim 16, wherein the computer readable program code for managing the wireless resources comprises computer readable program code for configuring the wireless networks to synchronize wireless communications with execution of one or more control algorithms by the remote terminal unit.

18. The computer readable medium of claim 16, wherein the computer readable program code for managing the wireless resources comprises computer readable program code implementing an ISA100.11a system manager and a Wireless Highway Addressable Remote Transducer (WirelessHART) network manager.

19. The computer readable medium of claim 18, wherein the computer readable program code for receiving the first data and the computer readable program code for initiating communication of the second data comprise computer readable program code for using multiple communication stacks, each communication stack associated with one of the wireless communication protocols.

20. The computer readable medium of claim 18, wherein the computer readable program code for managing the wireless resources further comprises computer readable program code for distributing wireless security keys to the ISA100.11a system manager and the WirelessHART network manager.

21. The computer readable medium of claim 15, wherein the computer program further comprises computer readable program code for:

storing third data being communicated between the remote terminal unit and the control system in a runtime data cache.
