Abstract

To provide navigation data to a head unit installed in a vehicle, an indication of a current location and a current orientation of the vehicle are received. Map data for generating a digital map of a geographic area including the current location is received from a network device via a first communication link. A digital map image is generated using the map data, such that the digital map is oriented in accordance with the current orientation. The digital map image is provided to the head unit via a second communication link

Claims

1. A computer-implemented method for providing navigation data to a head unit installed in a vehicle, the method comprising:

receiving, by one or more processors, an indication of a current location and a current orientation of the vehicle;

receiving, from a network device via a first communication link, map data for generating a digital map of a geographic area including the current location;

generating, by the one or more processors, a digital map image using the map data, including orienting the digital map in accordance with the current orientation; and

providing, by the one or more processors, the digital map image to the head unit via a second communication link.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the received map data conforms to a vector graphics format, and wherein generating the digital map image includes rasterizing the map data to generate a bitmap.

3. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

receiving, from the head via the second communication link, an indication of a screen size of the vehicle, via which the head unit displays information;

wherein generating the digital map image includes generating the digital map image in accordance with the indicated screen size.

4. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

receiving, from the head via the second communication link, an indication of visual styles to be applied to the digital map image; and

wherein generating the digital map image includes styling the digital map image in accordance with the indicated visual styles.

5. The method of claim 4, wherein the indication of visual styles indicates at least one of color, line thickness, and number of strokes.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein receiving the indication of the current location and the current orientation of the vehicle includes receiving location and orientation data from the head unit via the second communication link.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein generating and providing the digital map image to the head unit is in response to detecting proximity to a road junction, and wherein the digital map image illustrates maneuvers available at the road junction in a current direction of travel.

8. The method of claim 1, further comprising generating driving directions that define a route from an origin to a destination, wherein the route includes a plurality of route segments connected at road junctions;

wherein generating and providing the digital map image to the head unit is in response to detecting proximity to one of the road junctions included in the route.

9. The method of claim 1, further comprising generating driving directions that define a route from an origin to a destination, wherein the route includes a plurality of route segments connected at road junctions defining respective steps of the driving directions;

wherein generating and providing the digital map image to the head unit is in response to receiving, from the head unit via the second communication link, a request to display a digital map for a next step of the driving directions.

10. The method of claim 1 implemented in a portable device, further comprising personalizing the digital map image in accordance with personalization data specific to a user of the portable device.

11. The method of claim 10, wherein personalizing the digital map image includes displaying, on the digital map, a place the user previously visited.

12. The method of claim 1, wherein:

the first communication link is a long-range communication link, and

the second communication link is a short-range communication link.

13. A portable device comprising:

one or more processors;

a first network interface to communicate with network devices via a long-range communication link;

a second network interface to communicate with a head unit of a vehicle via a short-range communication link; and

a non-transitory computer-readable memory storing thereon instructions that, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the portable device to;

determine a current location and a current orientation of the vehicle,

receive, via the long-range communication link, map data for generating a digital map of a geographic area including the current location,

using the map data, generate a digital map image in accordance with the determined orientation of the vehicle, and

provide the digital map image to the head unit via the short-range communication link.

14. The portable device of claim 13, wherein the received map data conforms to a vector graphics format, and wherein generating the digital map image includes rasterizing the map data to generate a bitmap.

15. The portable device of claim 14, wherein the one or more processors include one or more graphics processing units, and wherein to generate the digital map image, the instructions cause the one or more graphics processing units to transform the map data in the vector graphics format to the bitmap.

16. The portable device of claim 13, wherein the instructions further cause the portable device to receive, from the head via the short-range communication link, an indication of a screen size of the vehicle, via which the head unit displays information, and wherein the instructions cause the portable device to generate the digital map image in accordance with the indicated screen size.

17. A method in a computing device for providing navigation data to a head unit of a vehicle, wherein the head unit includes a display device, the method comprising:

receiving, by one or more processors, navigation data that specifies a sequence of steps for travelling between a source to a destination, wherein each of the steps specifies a respective maneuver at a corresponding geographic location;

rendering, for each of the steps, a digital map image of a geographic area including the geographic location corresponding to the step to generate a sequence of digital map images, using the one or more processors; and

providing, by the one or more processors, the sequence of digital maps to the head unit of the vehicle.

18. The method of claim 17, wherein generating and providing the sequence of digital maps to the head unit includes not generating or providing digital map images between the steps.

19. The method of claim 18, wherein rendering the digital map image for each of the steps is in response is in response to detecting proximity to the geographic location corresponding to the step.

20. The method of claim 18, wherein rendering the digital map image for each of the steps is in response is in response to receiving a request for the digital map image from the head unit.

21. The method of claim 17, further comprising, for each step in the sequence of steps:

receiving, by the one or more processors, an indication of an orientation of the vehicle when the vehicle approaches the geographic location corresponding to the step, and

rendering, by the one or more processors, the digital map image for the step in accordance with the received orientation.

22. The method of claim 17, further comprising:

receiving, by the one or more processors, map data for generating digital maps of geographic areas including the locations corresponding to the steps, wherein the map data conforms to a vector graphics format;

wherein rendering the digital map image for each step includes rasterizing the map data to generate a bitmap.
