Abstract

An apparatus, system and methodology for conducting financial and other transactions using a wireless device are provided. A computing device includes a memory device that has stored therein a wallet application for completing transactions based on wireless data communications between the computing device and an external electronic device. The memory device further stores an electronic credential. The computing device includes a wireless transceiver configured to wirelessly communicate with the external electronic device. The computing device further includes a biometric characteristic reader for reading a biometric characteristic of a user. The computing device wirelessly transmits the electronic credential to the external electronic device based on comparing the biometric characteristic of the user with stored biometric information to initiate a transaction with the external electronic device

Claims

1. A computing device, comprising:

a display screen;

a user input interface;

one or more processors;

at least one memory device having stored therein a plurality of applications to be executed by the one or more processors, the plurality of applications including at least one wallet application for completing transactions based on wireless data communications between the computing device and at least one external electronic device, the at least one memory device further storing at least one electronic credential;

at least one wireless transceiver configured to wirelessly communicate with the at least one external electronic device; and

a biometric characteristic reader for reading a biometric characteristic of a user,

wherein the computing device is configured to wirelessly transmit the at least one electronic credential to the at least one external electronic device based on comparing the biometric characteristic of the user with stored biometric information to initiate one or more transactions with the at least one external electronic device.

2. The computing device of claim 1, wherein the biometric characteristic is a fingerprint.

3. The computing device of claim 1, wherein the biometric characteristic reader is configured to capture the biometric characteristic from the user to store the biometric characteristic as the stored biometric information.

4. The computing device of claim 1, wherein the at least one memory device includes a secure memory for storing the at least one electronic credential, the secure memory being tamper-resistant memory.

5. The computing device of claim 1, wherein the computing device is configured to download the at least one electronic credential wirelessly from a credential issuing server via a data network and to store the at least one electronic credential in the at least one memory device.

The computing device of claim 1, wherein the at least one electronic credential includes one or more of data associated with a credit card account, a debit card account, a stored value card account, an automated teller machine card account, a bank account, a payment token card account, a membership card account, a loyalty card account, an access card account, an identification card account, a driver'"'"'s license, an e-ticket, a pass, a coupon, and a certificate.

7. The computing device of claim 1, wherein the at least one electronic credential includes at least one payment token account number of a payment token account.

8. The computing device of claim 7, wherein the payment token account number is within a bank identification number (BIN) range that is associated with at least one of a payment card issuer and a payment network.

9. The computing device of claim 7, wherein the computing device is configured to transmit the payment token account number to a merchant system to transmit a transaction authorization request to an issuer system via a payment network.

10. The computing device of claim 7, wherein the payment token account is mapped to a linked payment account, including at least one of a credit account, a debit account, and a stored value account within a token management system.

11. The computing device of claim 10, wherein the linked payment account has an associated account number within a bank identification number (BIN) range associated with at least one of a payment card issuer and a payment network.

12. The computing device of claim 1, wherein the biometric characteristic reader is configured to read the biometric characteristic of the user based on the launch of the wallet application.

13. The computing device of claim 12, wherein the computing device is configured to provide a prompt to the user to provide input via the biometric characteristic reader based on the launch of the wallet application, and

the biometric characteristic reader is configured to read the biometric characteristic of the user after displaying the prompt.

14. The computing device of claim 13, wherein the computing device is configured to transmit to the at least one external electronic device the at least one electronic credential based on comparing a read biometric characteristic with the stored biometric characteristic and determining that the user is authorized to perform the one or more transactions using the computing device.

15. The computing device of claim 1, wherein the computing device is configured to provide at least one of a tone and a visual message on the display screen to confirm performance of the one or more transactions.

16. The computing device of claim 15, wherein confirming performance of the one or more transactions includes displaying on the display screen a transaction confirmation.

17. The computing device of claim 1, wherein the computing device is configured to wirelessly communicate with the at least one external electronic device by accessing a data network via the wireless transceiver.

18. The computing device of claim 17, wherein the data network is the Internet.

19. The computing device of claim 1, wherein the one or more transactions includes a payment transaction for purchase of one or more items represented on the display screen.

20. The computing device of claim 19, wherein the computing device is configured to complete one or more purchases using the at least one wallet application based on a user input to the user input interface selecting the at least one wallet application for performing the one or more purchases.

21. The computing device of claim 20, wherein the computing device is configured to generate on the display screen information regarding the one or more purchases, the information including one or more of a user name, billing information, shipping information, payment information, and the at least one electronic credential.

22. The computing device of claim 1, wherein the computing device is configured to receive from a merchant system a response message indicating one of approval or declining of the one or more transactions.

The computing device of claim 1, wherein the at least one wallet application is configured to transmit to the at least one external electronic device a transaction authorization request message including one or more of user identification information, billing information, and shipping information in a format readable by the at least one external electronic device.

24. The computing device of claim 1, wherein the at least one wireless transceiver includes one or more of a network transceiver configured to communicate with a cellular communications network, a short-range radio frequency (RF) transceiver to communicate with an external RF device supporting a predetermined communications protocol, a near-field communication (NFC) module, and an infra-red transceiver.

25. The computing device of claim 1, wherein the at least one wireless transceiver includes a near-field communication (NFC) module including a NFC antenna, the NFC module configured to transmit the at least one electronic credential to an NFC reader of the external electronic device to initiate a transaction with a merchant system based on the NFC antenna of the computing device being within a RF range of the NFC reader.

26. A method, comprising:

storing in at least one memory device of a computing device at least one electronic credential and one or more applications configured to be executed by one or more processors of the computing device, the computing device including a display screen, a user input interface, and at least one wireless transceiver;

communicating wirelessly, by the at least one wireless transceiver, with at least one external electronic device;

reading, by a biometric characteristic reader, a biometric characteristic of a user; and

transmitting the at least one electronic credential to the at least one external electronic device based on comparing the biometric characteristic of the user with stored biometric information to initiate one or more transactions with the at least one external electronic device.

27. The method of claim 26, wherein the biometric characteristic is a fingerprint.

28. The method of claim 26, further comprising capturing, by the biometric characteristic reader, the biometric characteristic from the user and storing the biometric characteristic as the stored biometric information.

29. The method of claim 26, wherein the at least one electronic credential is stored in a secure and tamper-resistant memory of the at least one memory device.

30. The method of claim 26, further comprising wirelessly downloading the at least one electronic credential from a credential issuing server via the data network and storing the at least one electronic credential in the at least one memory device.

31. The method of claim 26, wherein the at least one electronic credential includes one or more of data associated with a credit card account, a debit card account, a stored value card account, an automated teller machine card account, a bank account, a payment token card account, a membership card account, a loyalty card account, an access card account, an identification card account, a driver'"'"'s license, an e-ticket, a pass, a coupon, and a certificate.

32. The method of claim 26, wherein the at least one electronic credential includes at least one payment token account number of a payment token account.

33. The method of claim 32, wherein the payment token account number is within a bank identification number (BIN) range that is associated with at least one of a payment card issuer and a payment network.

34. The method of claim 33, wherein the payment token account is mapped to a linked payment account, including at least one of a credit account, a debit account, and a stored value account within a token management system.

35. The method of claim 34, wherein the linked payment account has an associated account number within a bank identification number (BIN) range associated with at least one of a payment card issuer and a payment network.

36. The method of claim 26, further comprising transmitting the at least one electronic credential by the computing device to the at least one external electronic device, to transmit a transaction authorization request to an issuer system via a payment network.

37. The method of claim 26, further comprising:

launching the wallet application to initiate the one or more transactions; and

reading, by the biometric characteristic reader, the biometric characteristic of the user based on launching the wallet application.

38. The method of claim 37, further comprising generating a prompt to request the user to provide an input to the biometric characteristic reader based on launching the wallet application;

and

reading the biometric characteristic of the user based in response to generating the prompt.

39. The method of claim 38, further comprising transmitting to the at least one external electronic device the at least one electronic credential based on comparing a read biometric characteristic with the stored biometric characteristic and determining that the user is authorized to transmit the at least one electronic credential to the at least one external electronic device.

40. The method of claim 26, further comprising providing at least one of a tone and a visual message on the display screen to confirm performance of the one or more transactions.

41. The method of claim 40, wherein confirming performance of the one or more transactions includes displaying on the display screen a transaction confirmation.

42. The method of claim 26, wherein the computing device is configured to wirelessly communicate with the at least one external electronic device by accessing a data network.

43. The method of claim 42, wherein the data network is the Internet.

44. The method of claim 26, wherein the one or more transactions includes a payment transaction for purchase of one or more items represented on the display screen.

45. The method of claim 44, further comprising:

receiving a user input to the user input interface selecting the at least one wallet application for performing one or more purchases; and

performing the one or more purchases using the at least one wallet application based on receiving the user input selecting the at least one wallet application.

46. The method of claim 45, further comprising generating on the display screen information regarding the one or more purchases, the information including one or more of a user name, billing information, shipping information, payment information, and the at least one electronic credential.

47. The method of claim 26, further comprising receiving from a merchant system a response message indicating one of approval or declining of the one or more transactions.

48. The method of claim 26, further comprising transmitting, by the wallet application of the computing device to a merchant system, a transaction authorization request message including one or more of user identification information, billing information, and shipping information in a format readable by the merchant system.

49. The method of claim 26, wherein the at least one wireless transceiver includes at least one of a network transceiver configured to communicate with a cellular communications network, a short-range radio frequency (RF) transceiver to communicate with an external short-range RF device supporting a predetermined communications protocol, a near-field communication (NFC) module, and an infra-red transceiver.

50. The method of claim 26, wherein the computing device includes a near-field communication (NFC) module including a NFC antenna, and the method comprises:

transmitting, by the NFC module via the NFC antenna, the at least one electronic credential to an NFC reader of an external electronic device to initiate a transaction with a second merchant system based on the NFC antenna of the computing device being within a RF range of the NFC reader.

51. The method of claim 26, further comprising:

displaying, by the display screen, transaction information corresponding to the one or more transactions between the computing device and the at least one external electronic device; and

reading the biometric information of the user based on the displaying of the transaction information.

52. A computing system, comprising:

a merchant system including one or more computers configured for processing information regarding one or more transactions to be performed with devices external to the merchant system; and

a computing device including a display screen, a user input interface, one or more processors, at least one memory device having stored therein at least one electronic credential and a plurality of applications to be executed by the one or more processors, and at least one wireless transceiver,

wherein the plurality of applications include at least one wallet application for completing transactions based on wireless data communications between the computing device and at least one external electronic device of the merchant system, and

wherein the computing device is configured to transmit the at least one electronic credential to the at least one external electronic device based on comparing the biometric characteristic of the user with stored biometric information.

53. The computing system of claim 52, wherein the biometric characteristic is a fingerprint.

54. The computing system of claim 52, wherein the biometric characteristic reader is configured to capture the biometric characteristic from the user to store the biometric characteristic as the stored biometric information.

55. The computing system of claim 52, wherein the at least one memory device includes a secure memory for storing the at least one electronic credential, the secure memory being tamper-resistant memory.

56. The computing system of claim 52, wherein the computing device is configured to download the at least one electronic credential wirelessly from a credential issuing server via a data network and to store the at least one electronic credential in the at least one memory device.

57. The computing system of claim 52, wherein the at least one electronic credential includes one or more of data associated with a credit card account, a debit card account, a stored value card account, an automated teller machine card account, a bank account, a payment token card account, a membership card account, a loyalty card account, an access card account, an identification card account, a driver'"'"'s license, an e-ticket, a pass, a coupon, and a certificate.

58. The computing system of claim 52, wherein the at least one electronic credential includes at least one payment token account number of a payment token account.

59. The computing system of claim 58, wherein the payment token account number is within a bank identification number (BIN) range that is associated with at least one of a payment card issuer and a payment network.

60. The computing system of claim 58, wherein the computing device is configured to transmit the payment token account number to a merchant system to transmit a transaction authorization request to an issuer system via a payment network.

61. The computing system of claim 58, wherein the payment token account is mapped to a linked payment account, including at least one of a credit account, a debit account, and a stored value account within a token management system.

62. The computing system of claim 61, wherein the linked payment account has an associated account number within a bank identification number (BIN) range associated with at least one of a payment card issuer and a payment network.

63. The computing system of claim 52, wherein the biometric characteristic reader is configured to read the biometric characteristic of the user based on the launch of the wallet application.

64. The computing system of claim 63, wherein the computing device is configured to provide a prompt to the user to provide input via the biometric characteristic reader based on the launch of the wallet application, and the biometric characteristic reader is configured to read the biometric characteristic of the user after displaying the prompt.

65. The computing system of claim 64, wherein the computing device is configured to transmit to the at least one external electronic device the at least one electronic credential based on comparing a read biometric characteristic with the stored biometric characteristic and determining that the user is authorized to perform the one or more transactions using the computing device.

66. The computing system of claim 52, wherein the computing device is configured to provide at least one of a tone and a visual message on the display screen to confirm performance of the one or more transactions.

67. The computing system of claim 66, wherein confirming performance of the one or more transactions includes displaying on the display screen a transaction confirmation.

68. The computing system of claim 52, wherein the computing device is configured to wirelessly communicate with the at least one external electronic device by accessing a data network via the wireless transceiver.

69. The computing system of claim 68, wherein the data network is the Internet.

70. The computing system of claim 52, wherein the information regarding one or more transactions to be performed with devices external to the at least one external electronic device includes information regarding items purchasable via the merchant system, and

the one or more transactions include one or more purchases of the items represented on the display screen.

71. The computing system of claim 70, wherein the computing device is configured to complete the one or more purchases using the at least one wallet application based on receiving a user input to the user input interface selecting the at least one wallet application for performing the one or more purchases.

The computing system of claim 71, wherein the computing device is configured to generate on the display screen information regarding the one or more purchases, the information including one or more of a user name, billing information, shipping information, payment information, and the at least one electronic credential.

73. The computing system of claim 52, wherein the computing device is configured to receive from a merchant system a response message indicating one of approval or declining of the one or more transactions.

74. The computing system of claim 52, wherein the at least one wallet application is configured to transmit to the merchant system a transaction authorization request message including one or more of user identification information, billing information, and shipping information in a format readable by the at least one external electronic device.

75. The computing system of claim 52, wherein the wireless transceiver includes at least one of a network transceiver configured to communicate with a cellular communications network, a short-range radio frequency (RF) transceiver to communicate with an external short-range RF device supporting a predetermined communications protocol, a near-field communications (NFC) module, and an infra-red transceiver.

76. The computing system of claim 52, wherein wireless transceiver includes a near-field communication (NFC) module including a NFC antenna, the NFC module configured to transmit the at least one electronic credential to an NFC reader of the external electronic device to initiate a transaction with the merchant system based on the NFC antenna of the computing device being within a RF range of the NFC reader.
