Abstract

An operation management server that manages a storage apparatus in which volumes are included and data is sent and received via transmission resources is provided. The operation management server includes a setting unit that sets a target value of the performance to some or all of the volumes; a monitoring unit that monitors the load factor of the transmission resources; and a bandwidth management unit that specifies a target transmission resource on the basis of the load factor of the transmission resources, that decides, on the basis of the target value, bandwidth allocation of some of the volumes that use the specified transmission resource, and that instructs a bandwidth control unit in the storage apparatus to adjust the bandwidth on the basis of the decided bandwidth allocation.

Claims

1. A storage management device that manages a storage apparatus in which a plurality of storage units are included and data is sent and received via transmission resources, the storage management device comprising:

a setting unit that sets a target value of the performance to some or all of the storage units;

a monitoring unit that monitors the load factor of the transmission resources; and

a bandwidth management unit that specifies a target transmission resource on the basis of the load factor of the transmission resources, that decides, on the basis of the target value, bandwidth allocation of some of the storage units that use the specified transmission resource, and that instructs a bandwidth limiting unit in the storage apparatus to adjust the bandwidth on the basis of the decided bandwidth allocation.

The storage management device according to claim 1, wherein the bandwidth management unit performs, for each storage unit in which the target value is set, a process that specifies a transmission resource that has the highest load factor in a transmission path that is used by some of the storage units in each of which the target value is set, that extracts the storage units that use the specified transmission resource, and that decides bandwidth allocation of the extracted storage units.

The storage management device according to claim 2, wherein, from among the extracted storage units, the bandwidth management unit expands the bandwidth of the transmission path used by the storage unit in which measured performance is less than the target value, reduces the bandwidth of the transmission path used by the storage unit in which the target value is not set and that uses the specified transmission resource, reduces the bandwidth of the transmission path used by the storage unit in which measured performance is greater than the target value, and expands the bandwidth of the transmission path used by the storage unit in which the target value is not set and that uses the specified transmission resource.

The storage management device according to claim 3, wherein, from among the extracted storage units, the bandwidth management unit expands the bandwidth of the transmission path used by the storage unit in which measured performance is less than the target value and that sends and receives data of a bandwidth that is equal to or greater than the bandwidth.

The storage management device according to claim 3, wherein, when another storage unit in which measured performance is less than the target value is present in the extracted storage units, the bandwidth management unit reduces the bandwidth of the transmission path used by the storage unit in which measured performance is greater than the target value and expands the bandwidth of the storage unit in which the target value is not set and that uses the specified transmission resource.

6. The storage management device according to claim 1 further comprising a switch that connects the storage apparatus to an external device and that includes switch ports, wherein

the storage apparatus includes

RAID groups that include the storage units,

processing processors that execute a process of sending and receiving data to and from the storage units, and

ports to which the switch is connected, and

the transmission resources include some or all of the RAID group, the processing processor, the port, and the switch port.

7. The storage management device according to claim 1, wherein

the setting unit sets a target value of the response time as the target value of the performance, and

the bandwidth management unit uses, as the target value, a value that is obtained by normalizing the target value that is set by the setting unit in terms of the data size and the cache hit rate.

8. The storage management device according to claim 1, wherein the bandwidth management unit uses the load factor of the transmission resources such that the upper limit of the load factor is used as a reference for the normalization.

The storage management device according to claim 1, wherein, on the basis of differences between the target value and the measured performance of the storage units in each of which the target value is set, the bandwidth management unit extracts the storage unit on which adjustment of the bandwidth to be performed.

10. The storage management device according to claim 9, wherein

the storage units are grouped into management groups in each of which the bandwidth is changed by a single instruction, from the bandwidth management unit, to adjust the bandwidth, and

the bandwidth management unit adjusts the bandwidth of each of the storage units included in a predetermined number of groups in the order of the groups in which the total sum of the differences between the target value and the measured performance of the storage units in each of which the target value is set and that is included in one of the management groups is large.

The storage management device according to claim 1, wherein the bandwidth control unit obtains the differences between the bandwidth that is set in each of the storage units and a used bandwidth, reduces the bandwidth of the storage unit in which, in a predetermined time period, the used bandwidth is less than the set bandwidth, and expands, by an amount corresponding to the reduced amount, the bandwidth of the storage unit in which the used bandwidth is greater than the set bandwidth.

12. The storage management device according to claim 2, wherein

the setting unit sets, as the target value of the performance, a target value of the response time when reading is performed and a target value of the response time when writing is performed, and

from among the extracted storage units, the bandwidth management unit expands the bandwidth of the transmission path that is used by the storage unit in which the response time of the measured writing or the response time of the measured reading is longer than the target value, reduces the bandwidth of the transmission path that is used by the storage unit in which the target value is not set and that uses the specified transmission resource, reduces the bandwidth of the transmission path that is used by the storage unit in which the response time of the measured writing and the response time of the measured reading are shorter than the target value, and expands the bandwidth of the storage unit in which the target value is not set and that uses the specified transmission resource.

13. A control method of a storage system that includes a storage management device and a storage apparatus, the control method comprising:

setting, performed by the storage management device, a target value of the performance to some or all of a plurality of storage units that are included in the storage apparatus in which data is sent and received via transmission resources;

monitoring, performed by the storage management device, the load factor of the transmission resources;

specifying, performed by the storage management device, a target transmission resource on the basis of the load factor of the transmission resources;

deciding, performed by the storage management device, on the basis of the target value, bandwidth allocation of some of the storage units that use the specified transmission resource; and

adjusting, performed by the storage apparatus, the bandwidth of the storage units in accordance with the bandwidth allocation decided by the storage management device.

A non-transitory computer-readable recording medium having stored therein a control program for a storage management device that manages a storage apparatus in which storage units are included and data is sent and received via transmission resources, the control program causing a computer to execute a process comprising:

setting a target value of the performance to some or all of the storage units;

monitoring the load factor of the transmission resources;

specifying a target transmission resource on the basis of the load factor of the transmission resources;

deciding, on the basis of the target value, bandwidth allocation of some of the storage units that use the specified transmission resource; and

adjusting the bandwidth of the storage units in accordance with the bandwidth allocation decided at the deciding.
