Abstract

Systems and methods for optimization of mobile traffic directed to private networks and operator configurability thereof are disclosed. One embodiment includes a method, which may be implemented on a system, for identifying a network accessed by mobile traffic at a mobile device, identifying an operator of the network, and/or determining whether the mobile traffic is directed towards a private or public network. In response to determining that the mobile traffic is directed towards a private network, determining whether the private network is owned by or operated by the operator. Optimization of the mobile traffic is performed based on policies set by the operator. In general, the system maintains and/or enforces different sets of policies regarding mobile traffic optimization set by different and multiple operators.

Claims

1. A method of optimizing mobile traffic, the method, comprising:

identifying first and second networks accessed by mobile traffic at a mobile device;

wherein an operator of the network is determined based on characteristics or data of the identified first and second networks;

applying a first optimization policy to the first network; and

applying a second optimization policy to the second network that is different from the first optimization policy when the operator of each of the networks is not the same.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising determining that the first network is a public network, further including determining whether the second network is a private network, wherein the same optimization policy is applied to the first network and the second network when the operator of the second network is the same as the first network.

3. The method of claim 2, further comprising, optimizing the mobile traffic in response to determining that the second network has the same operator as the first network.

4. The method of claim 3, further comprising, intercepting the mobile traffic in order to optimize the mobile traffic.

5. The method of claim 4, wherein, the traffic is intercepted by a local proxy on the mobile device.

6. The method of claim 3, wherein, the optimization is performed by the local proxy and/or a proxy server coupled to the local proxy remote from the mobile device.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein, the optimizing the mobile traffic includes batching requests originated from the mobile device.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein, the optimizing the mobile traffic includes categorization based on foreground or background traffic.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein, the optimizing the mobile traffic includes prioritization of the traffic based on time criticality.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein, the optimizing the mobile traffic includes alignment or delay of polling requests from the mobile device.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein, the optimizing the mobile traffic includes monitoring of application behavior on the mobile device.

12. The method of claim 1, wherein, the optimizing the mobile traffic includes optimizing the traffic based on user behavior at the mobile device.

13. The method of claim 1, wherein, the optimizing the mobile traffic includes content caching at the mobile device to decrease future traffic requests from network access.

14. The method of claim 1, wherein, the network accessed by the mobile traffic is a cellular network.

15. The method of claim 1, wherein, the network accessed by the mobile traffic is a WIFI network.

16. A system for optimizing mobile traffic over a network, the method, comprising:

an identification module configured for identifying first and second networks accessed by mobile traffic;

a policy manager configured for;

applying a first optimization policy to the first network; and

applying a second optimization policy to the second network that is different from the first optimization policy when the operator of each of the networks is not the same,

wherein an operator of the network is determined based on characteristics or data of the identified first and second networks.

17. The system of claim 16, wherein the identification module is further configured for determining that the first network is a public network and whether the second network is a private network, wherein the same optimization policy is applied to the first network and the second network when the operator of the second network is the same as the first network.

18. The system of claim 17, wherein, the first and second policies are set by the operator and include policies for mobile traffic directed towards the private network.

19. The system of claim 18, wherein, the policies set by the operator include policies for mobile traffic directed towards the public network.

20. The system of claim 18, wherein, the policies set by the operator are configurable and reconfigurable.

21. A mobile device whose traffic is optimized based on destination of the traffic, comprising:

a processor coupled to a memory unit;

the memory unit having instructions stored thereon, which when executed by the processor causes the processor to;

identify first and second networks accessed by mobile traffic at a mobile device;

wherein an operator of the network is determined based on characteristics or data of the identified first and second networks;

apply a first optimization policy to the first network; and

apply a second optimization policy to the second network that is different from the first optimization policy when the operator of each of the networks is not the same.
