Abstract

Synchronization of communication events according to a global time base (GTB). Devices implementing the GTB may be configured to awaken and exchange discovery and service capability information over pre-scheduled channels at time points determined according to the GTB. The GTB may be correlated to Global Positioning System (GPS) system time. A global time server (GTS) is described for providing a local source of accurate clock time relative to the GTB. The GTS may aggregate multiple sources of absolute and/or relative time including GPS and WWAN, select the most accurate source for a mobile environment, track source state transitions, and manage clock drift. Global time clients (GTCs) may receive updates from the GTS and compute offsets for communication events relative to a local clock. The GTC may correct for transport errors from transmission of the updated global time value across modules or sub-components of the devices.

Claims

1. A method of compensating a globally synchronized time of a communication device, comprising:

receiving a message from a first module of the device at a second module of the device at a first local time value, the message including a common reference time value of a global time base and a corresponding second local time value; and

generating a local time compensation offset for compensating local clock time values relative to the global time base based at least in part on a difference between the second local time value and the first local time value.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

determining an event target time value relative to the global time base;

determining an event target time offset value relative to a local clock based at least in part on the event target time and the common reference time value; and

compensating the event timer offset value based at least in part on the local time compensation offset.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein compensating the event timer offset value is further based at least in part on a delay associated with enabling a radio interface of the second module.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein receiving the message including the common reference time value of the global time base comprises:

receiving the message with the common reference time value being based at least in part on at least one signal from an entity of a global navigation system.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein receiving the message comprises accessing a shared memory interface.

6. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

receiving a subsequent message from the first module of the device at a third local time value, the subsequent message including another common reference time value of the global time base and a fourth local time value; and

re-generating the local time compensation offset based at least in part on a difference between the third local time value and the fourth local time value.

7. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

determining the first local time value using a system clock available to the first and second modules.

8. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

determining the first local time value using a local clock of the second module, the local clock of the second module being synchronized with a local clock of the first module via an interconnection bus of the communication device.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the second module is asynchronous with respect to the first module.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein receiving the message comprises receiving a tuple including the common reference time value and the second local time value.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein the first module is a component of a first integrated circuit chip and the second module is a component of a second, different integrated circuit chip.

12. The method of claim 1, wherein the first and second modules are components of a same integrated circuit chip.

13. An apparatus for compensating a globally synchronized time of a communication device, comprising:

means for receiving a message from a first module of the device at a second module of the device at a first local time value, the message including a common reference time value of a global time base and a corresponding second local time value; and

means for generating a local time compensation offset for compensating local clock time values relative to the global time base based at least in part on a difference between the second local time value and the first local time value.

14. The apparatus of claim 13, further comprising:

means for determining an event target time value relative to the global time base;

means for determining an event timer offset value relative to a local clock based at least in part on the event target time and the common reference time value; and

means for compensating the event timer offset value based at least in part on the local time compensation offset.

15. The apparatus of claim 14, wherein the means for compensating the event timer offset value is configured to compensate the event timer offset value based at least in part on a delay associated with enabling a radio interface of the second module.

16. The apparatus of claim 13, further comprising:

means for determining an event schedule comprising a plurality of communication events, each of the plurality of communication events associated with a global time value correlated to the global time base.

17. The apparatus of claim 13, further comprising:

a shared memory interface, the means for receiving the message being configured to receive the message by accessing the shared memory interface.

18. The apparatus of claim 13, wherein:

the means for receiving is configured to receive a subsequent message at the second module of the device at a third local time value, the subsequent message including another common reference time value of the global time base and a fourth local time value; and

the means for generating is configured to re-generate the local time compensation offset based at least in part on a difference between the third local time value and the fourth local time value.

19. The apparatus of claim 13, further comprising:

means for determining the first local time value using a system clock available to the first and second modules.

20. The apparatus of claim 13, further comprising:

means for determining the first local time value using a local clock of the second module; and

an interconnection bus via which the local clock of the second module is synchronized with a local clock of the first module.

21. A computer program product for compensating a globally synchronized time of a communication device, the computer program product comprising a non-transitory computer readable medium, the computer readable medium storing instructions executable by a processor to:

receive a message from a first module of the device at a second module of the device at a first local time value, the message including a common reference time value of a global time base and a corresponding second local time value; and

generate a local time compensation offset for compensating local clock time values relative to the global time based at least in part on a difference between the second local time value and the first local time value.

22. The computer program product of claim 21, wherein the instructions are executable to:

determine an event target time value relative to the global time base;

determine an event timer offset value relative to a local clock based at least in part on the event target time and the common reference time value; and

compensate the event timer offset value based at least in part on the local time compensation offset.

23. The computer program product of claim 22, wherein the instructions are executable to:

compensate the event timer offset value further based at least in part on a delay associated with enabling a radio interface of the second module.

24. The computer program product of claim 21, wherein the instructions executable to receive the message including the common reference time value of the global time base are executable to:

receive the message with the common reference time value being based at least in part on at least one signal from an entity of a global navigation system.

25. The computer program product of claim 21, wherein the instructions are executable to:

receive a subsequent message from the first module of the device at a third local time value, the subsequent message including another common reference time value of the global time base and a fourth local time value; and

re-generate the local time compensation offset based at least in part on a difference between the third local time value and the fourth local time value.

26. The computer program product of claim 21, wherein the instructions are executable to:

determine the first local time value using a system clock available to the first and second modules.

27. An apparatus for compensating a globally synchronized time of a communication device, comprising:

a global time server configured to obtain a common reference time value of a global time base and a corresponding first local time value;

a global time client configured to receive a message from the global time server at a second local time value, the message including the common reference time value of the global time base and the corresponding first local time value; and

means for generating a local time compensation offset for compensating local clock time values relative to the global time base based at least in part on a difference between the second local time value and the first local time value.

28. The apparatus of claim 27, wherein the global time server is configured to obtain the common reference time value of the global time base based at least in part on at least one signal from an entity of a global navigation system.

29. The apparatus of claim 27, further comprising:

a first shared memory interface in communication with the global time server;

a second shared memory interface in communication with the global time client; and

a shared memory to which the global time server provides the message via the first shared memory interface and from which the global time client receives the message via the second shared memory interface.

30. The apparatus of claim 27, wherein:

the global time server configured to obtain another common reference time value of the global time base and a corresponding third local time value;

the global time client is configured to receive a subsequent message from the global time server at a fourth local time value, the subsequent message including the another common reference time value of the global time base and the third local time value; and

the means for generating is configured to re-generate the local time compensation offset based at least in part on a difference between the third local time value and the fourth local time value.
