Abstract

In some embodiments, an apparatus is provided that includes a bi-directional communication bus, a set of battery sections connected to the bi-directional communication bus, and a battery manager circuit bi-directional communication bus. Each of the battery sections of the set has a clock circuit. The battery manager circuit is configured to communicate with the set of battery sections via the bi-directional communication bus using a synchronous master-slave communication protocol, in which symbols transmitted by the battery manager circuit include respective timing trigger segments and respective data segments. Each battery section of the set of battery sections is configured and arranged to adjust a frequency or a phase of the respective clock circuit of the battery section, relative to timing of the timing trigger segments.

Claims

1. An apparatus, comprising:

a bi-directional communication bus;

a set of battery sections connected to the bi-directional communication bus, each of the battery sections of the set having a clock circuit; and

a battery manager circuit connected to the bi-directional communication bus and configured and arranged to communicate with the set of battery sections via the bi-directional communication bus using a synchronous master-slave communication protocol, in which symbols transmitted by the battery manager circuit include respective timing trigger segments and respective data segments, wherein each battery section of the set of battery sections is configured and arranged to adjust a frequency or a phase of the respective clock circuit of the battery section, relative to timing of the timing trigger segments.

The apparatus of claim 1, wherein each battery section of the set of battery sections is configured and arranged to, in response to receiving one of the symbols transmitted from the battery manager circuit and in a first direction over the bi-directional communication bus, communicate a status of the battery section in a second direction over the bi-directional communication bus.

The apparatus of claim 1, wherein in each battery section of the set of battery sections, the respective clock circuit is configured and arranged to maintain a clock signal, and adjust frequency of the clock signal to match a frequency of the respective timing trigger segments of symbols communicated by the battery manager circuit over the bi-directional communication bus.

4. The apparatus of claim 3, wherein the respective clock circuit of the battery section is one of a frequency-locked-loop or a phase-locked loop.

The apparatus of claim 3, wherein the battery manager circuit is configured to, in response to the bi-directional communication bus being idle for a threshold period of time, communicate a symbol to the set of battery sections including a timing trigger segment and including a data segment having synchronization data, the synchronization data being configured to allow the clock circuit of each battery section of the set of the battery sections to adjust the frequency of the respective clock to match a frequency of the synchronization data without prompting the battery section to take additional action.

6. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein each battery section of the set of battery sections is configured and arranged to adjust the frequency and the phase of the respective clock circuit.

The apparatus of claim 1, wherein each battery section of the set of battery sections includes a first connection node and a second connection node, and the set of battery sections are connected in a daisy-chain via the first and second connection nodes to form the bi-directional communication bus.

8. The apparatus of claim 7, wherein each battery section of the set of battery sections is configured and arranged to:

in response to receiving a symbol via the first connection node, forward the symbol along the bi-directional communication bus via the second connection node; and

in response to receiving a symbol via the second connection node, forward the symbol along the bi-directional communication bus via the first connection node.

9. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein each of the set of battery sections includes:

a battery cell; and

a communication circuit connected to the battery cell and configured to communicate cell-status data characterizing the battery cell over the bi-directional communication bus.

The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the battery manager circuit is configured and arranged to encode a first symbol with a first data value by setting the entire data segment of the symbol to high value, and encode a second symbol with a second data value by setting the entire data segment of the symbol to low value.

11. The apparatus of claim 10, wherein the battery manager circuit is configured and arranged to encode a third symbol with a third data value by setting a first portion of the data segment to the low value and a section portion of the data segment to the high value.

The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the battery manager circuit and the set of battery sections are configured to communicate data from the set of battery sections to the battery manager circuit by using the battery manager circuit to drive the bi-directional communication bus to a recessive high voltage and using the set of battery sections to pull the bi-directional communication bus down to a dominant low voltage.

13. An apparatus comprising:

a plurality of battery sections, each including

a battery cell,

a clock circuit, and

a communication circuit coupled to the battery cell and the clock circuit and having first and second connection nodes, the plurality of battery sections connected in a daisy-chain via the first and second connection nodes to form a bi-directional communication bus; and

a battery manager circuit connected to the bi-directional communication bus and configured and arranged to communicate with the plurality of battery sections via the bi-directional communication bus using a synchronous master-slave communication protocol, in which symbols transmitted by the battery manager circuit include respective timing trigger segments and respective data segments, wherein each battery section of the plurality of battery sections is configured and arranged to adjust a frequency or a phase of the respective clock circuit of the battery section, relative to timing of the timing trigger segments.

The apparatus of claim 13, wherein each battery section of the plurality of battery sections is configured and arranged to, in response to receiving one of the symbols transmitted from the battery manager circuit and in a first direction over the bi-directional communication bus, communicate cell-status data characterizing the battery cell in a second direction over the bi-directional communication bus.

The apparatus of claim 13, wherein, in each battery section of the plurality of battery sections, the respective clock circuit includes one of a frequency-locked-loop or a phase-locked loop configured and arranged to maintain a clock signal and adjust frequency of the clock signal to match a frequency of the respective timing trigger segments of symbols communicated by the battery manager circuit over the communication bus.

The apparatus of claim 15, wherein the battery manager circuit is configured to, in response to the bi-directional communication bus being idle for a threshold period of time, communicate a symbol to the plurality of battery sections, the symbol including a timing trigger segment and including a data segment having synchronization data, the synchronization data being configured to allow the clock circuit of each battery section of the plurality of the battery sections to adjust the frequency of the respective clock to match a frequency of the synchronization data without prompting the battery section to take additional action.

17. The apparatus of claim 13, wherein each battery section of the plurality of battery sections is configured and arranged to adjust the frequency and the phase of the respective clock circuit.

The apparatus of claim 13, wherein the battery manager circuit is configured and arranged to encode a first symbol with a first data value by setting the entire data segment of the symbol to high value, and encode a second symbol with a second data value by setting the entire data segment of the symbol to low value.

19. The apparatus of claim 18, wherein the battery manager circuit is configured and arranged to encode a third symbol with a third data value by setting a first portion of the data segment to the low value and a section portion of the data segment to the high value.

20. An apparatus comprising:

a plurality of battery sections, each including

a battery cell,

a clock circuit, and

a communication circuit coupled to the battery cell and the clock circuit and having a first and second connection nodes, the plurality of battery sections connected in a daisy-chain via the first and second connection nodes to form a bi-directional communication bus; and

a battery manager circuit connected to the bi-directional communication bus and configured and arranged to communicate with the plurality of battery sections via the bi-directional communication bus using a master-slave communication protocol, in which transmission of data symbol segments is coordinated by timing trigger segments transmitted by the battery manager circuit.
