Abstract

Techniques for rendering a modeled scene are disclosed. In some embodiments, a database comprising locally available generic object definitions is maintained at a destination device at which a scene is desired to be rendered. A scene is rendered by configuring one or more locally available generic object definitions obtained from the database according to a received specification of a modeled scene, wherein rendering is constrained to rendering locally available objects whose definitions are included in the database.

Claims

1. A system, comprising:

a database comprising locally available generic object definitions; and

a processor configured to;

receive a specification of a modeled scene that references generic object definitions; and

render the scene by configuring one or more locally available generic object definitions obtained from the database according to the received specification of the modeled scene, wherein the processor is constrained to render locally available objects whose definitions are included in the database.

2. The system of claim 1, wherein the database comprises a local version of a global database of generic object definitions.

3. The system of claim 1, wherein the database comprises a subset of a global database of generic object definitions.

4. The system of claim 1, wherein the locally available generic object definitions that populate the database are received asynchronously with respect to the specification of the modeled scene.

5. The system of claim 1, wherein the locally available generic object definitions that populate the database are received via a high bandwidth communication channel.

6. The system of claim 1, wherein the specification of the modeled scene is received via a low bandwidth communication channel.

7. The system of claim 1, wherein the database is continuously updated.

8. The system of claim 1, wherein the database is periodically updated or updated at prescribed times.

9. The system of claim 1, wherein the specification of the modeled scene comprises content specific data.

10. The system of claim 1, wherein the scene is rendered in a highest quality supported by the system.

11. The system of claim 1, wherein the specification of the modeled scene comprises a list of objects and parameters that define the scene.

12. The system of claim 1, wherein the specification of the modeled scene comprises one or more of object coordinates, object orientations, object motions, scene lighting, camera poses, camera settings, and audio data.

13. The system of claim 1, wherein a generic object definition comprises data associated with one or more of geometry, material properties, surface textures, and appearance.

14. The system of claim 1, wherein in the event that a generic object definition referenced in the specification of the modeled scene is not locally available in the database, the processor is further configured to select a close match from the locally available generic object definitions in the database when rendering the scene.

15. The system of claim 1, wherein in the event that a generic object definition referenced in the specification of the modeled scene is not locally available in the database, the processor is further configured to obtain the generic object definition from a global database.

16. The system of claim 1, wherein in the event that a generic object definition referenced in the specification of the modeled scene is not locally available in the database, the processor is further configured to receive the generic object definition from a global database.

17. The system of claim 1, wherein the system comprises a first system and further comprising a second system configured to receive the same specification of the modeled scene, wherein the scene is rendered differently by the first system and by the second system based on locally available generic object definitions at each system.

18. The system of claim 1, wherein the system comprises a destination device at which the scene is rendered.

19. A method, comprising:

maintaining a database comprising locally available generic object definitions;

receiving at an interface a specification of a modeled scene that references generic object definitions; and

using a processor to render the scene by configuring one or more locally available generic object definitions obtained from the database according to the received specification of the modeled scene, wherein rendering is constrained to rendering locally available objects whose definitions are included in the database.

20. A computer program product embodied in a non-transitory computer usable storage medium, comprising computer instructions for:

maintaining a database comprising locally available generic object definitions;

receiving a specification of a modeled scene that references generic object definitions; and

rendering the scene by configuring one or more locally available generic object definitions obtained from the database according to the received specification of the modeled scene, wherein rendering is constrained to rendering locally available objects whose definitions are included in the database.
