Abstract

There is described a system for modifying messages having an archive format in a communications network, the communications network comprising a first network device, a second network device and a third network device. The system comprises receiving, at the first network device, a message, the message sent from the second network device for receipt by the third network device; selectively modifying, at the first network device, content of the received message that is in an archive format, based on a determination that the content can be optimized, sending the received message with the optimized content to the third network device.

Claims

1. An apparatus for modifying messages having an archive format in a network comprising the apparatus, a second network device and a third network device, the apparatus comprising:

at least one processor;

and at least one memory including computer program code;

the at least one memory and the computer program code being configured to, with the at least one processor, cause the apparatus at least to;

receive a message sent from the second network device for receipt by the third network device;

selectively modify content of the received message that is in an archive format, based on a determination that the content can be optimized; and

send the received message with the optimized content to the third network device.

2. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the processing system is further arranged to cause the apparatus to analyze the received message to determine if the received message comprises content having an archive format.

3. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the optimizing of the received messaged is based on a characteristic of the received message.

4. The apparatus of claim 3, wherein the characteristic is a content type indicated by the received message.

5. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the received message having the archive format comprises a container for an electronic file and the optimizing comprises identifying at least one field of the container for removal from the container.

6. The apparatus of claim 5 wherein the at least one field is for use for reserving additional bytes to allow a part of the container to be expanded.

7. The apparatus of claim 5, wherein the file is an Office Open XML file and the field is a Growth Hint field.

8. The apparatus of claim 5, wherein the container is a Mozilla Firefox extension and the field comprises one or more of:

a Group Identifier (GID), a User Identifier (UID), a language bit and a file modification time.

9. The apparatus of claim 5, wherein the field comprises information relating to a file system.

10. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the received message is a hypertext transfer protocol (HTTP) response message.

11. The apparatus of claim 10 wherein the processing system is further arranged to cause the apparatus to analyze a content-type header of the HTTP response message to determine if the HTTP response message comprises an archive format.

12. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the processing system is further arranged to cause the apparatus to determine if compression has been applied to the content.

The apparatus of claim 12, wherein the processing system is further arranged to cause the apparatus, if it is determined that the content has been compressed, to determine whether the content can be more efficiently compressed, and if it is determined that the content can be more efficiently compressed, to re-compress the content so that it is more efficiently compressed

14. The apparatus of claim 12, wherein the processing system is further arranged to cause the apparatus to de-compress the content if it is determined that the content is compressed and bloated.

15. The apparatus of claim 12, wherein the processing system is further arranged to cause the apparatus to compress the content if it is determined that the content is un-compressed.

16. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the optimized message for sending to the third network device also comprises an archive format.

17. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the archive format is a ZIP file format.

18. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the content comprises an apk file.

19. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the processing system is further arranged to cause the apparatus to modify the apk file by aligning uncompressed data using a byte alignment process.

20. The apparatus of claim 13 wherein the processing system is further arranged to cause the apparatus to covert a ZIP container to a GZIP container.

21. A method for modifying messages having an archive format in a communications network, the communications network comprising a first network device, a second network device and a third network device, the method comprising:

receiving, at the first network device, a message, the message sent from the second network device for receipt by the third network device;

selectively modifying, at the first network device, content of the received message that is in an archive format, based on a determination that the content can be optimized,

sending the received message with the optimized content to the third network device.

A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium comprising a set of computer-readable instructions stored thereon, which, when executed by a processing system, cause the processing system to carry out a method for modifying messages having an archive format in a communications network, the communications network comprising a first network device, a second network device and a third network device, the method comprising:

receiving, at the first network device, a message, the message sent from the second network device for receipt by the third network device;

selectively modifying, at the first network device, content of the received message that is in an archive format, based on a determination that the content can be optimized,

sending the received message with the optimized content to the third network device.
