Abstract

In a method for determining a primary storage device and a secondary storage device for copies of data, one or more processors determine metrics data for at least two storage devices in a computing environment. The one or more processors adjust the metrics data. The one or more processors determine an I/O throughput value based on the adjusted metrics data for each of the at least two storage devices. The one or more processors compare the determined I/O throughput values for each of the at least two storage devices. The one or more processors select a storage device of the at least two storage devices with the lowest determined I/O throughput as a primary storage device.

Claims

1. A method for determining a primary storage device and a secondary storage device for copies of data, the method comprising the steps of:

one or more processors determining metrics data for at least two storage devices in a computing environment;

the one or more processors adjusting the metrics data;

the one or more processors determining an I/O throughput value based on the adjusted metrics data for each of the at least two storage devices;

the one or more processors comparing the determined I/O throughput values for each of the at least two storage devices; and

the one or more processors selecting a storage device of the at least two storage devices with the lowest determined I/O throughput as a primary storage device.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising the step of the one or more processors selecting the storage device of the at least two storage devices with the second lowest determined I/O throughput as a secondary storage device.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the step of the one or more processors determining metrics data for the at least two storage devices in the computing environment comprises the one or more processors receiving the metrics data for the at least two storage devices in the computing environment.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the metrics data includes a measurement of two or more types of metrics for each of the at least two storage devices.

5. The method of claim 4, wherein the two or more types of metrics are selected from the group consisting of read data blocks, written data blocks, total data blocks, queue depth, and network traffic.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the step of the one or more processors adjusting the metrics data comprises the one or more processors adjusting the metrics data using a predefined weighting factor.

7. A computer program product for determining a primary storage device and a secondary storage device for copies of data, the computer program product comprising:

one or more computer-readable storage media and program instructions stored on the one or more computer-readable storage media, the program instructions comprising;

program instructions to determine metrics data for at least two storage devices in a computing environment;

program instructions to adjust the metrics data;

program instructions to determine an I/O throughput value based on the adjusted metrics data for each of the at least two storage devices;

program instructions to compare the determined I/O throughput values for each of the at least two storage devices; and

program instructions to select a storage device of the at least two storage devices with the lowest determined I/O throughput as a primary storage device.

8. The computer program product of claim 7, further comprising program instructions, stored on the one or more computer-readable storage media, to select the storage device of the at least two storage devices with the second lowest determined I/O throughput as a secondary storage device.

9. The computer program product of claim 7, wherein the program instructions to determine metrics data for the at least two storage devices in the computing environment comprise program instructions to receive the metrics data for the at least two storage devices in the computing environment.

10. The computer program product of claim 7, wherein the metrics data includes a measurement of two or more types of metrics for each of the at least two storage devices.

11. The computer program product of claim 10, wherein the two or more types of metrics are selected from the group consisting of read data blocks, written data blocks, total data blocks, queue depth, and network traffic.

12. The computer program product of claim 7, wherein the program instructions to adjust the metrics data comprise program instructions to adjust the metrics data using a predefined weighting factor.

13. A computer system for determining a primary storage device and a secondary storage device for copies of data, the computer system comprising:

one or more computer processors;

one or more computer-readable storage media;

program instructions stored on the computer-readable storage media for execution by at least one of the one or more processors, the program instructions comprising;

program instructions to determine metrics data for at least two storage devices in a computing environment;

program instructions to adjust the metrics data;

program instructions to determine an I/O throughput value based on the adjusted metrics data for each of the at least two storage devices;

program instructions to compare the determined I/O throughput values for each of the at least two storage devices; and

program instructions to select a storage device of the at least two storage devices with the lowest determined I/O throughput as a primary storage device.

The computer system of claim 13, further comprising program instructions, stored on the computer-readable storage media for execution by at least one of the one or more processors, to select the storage device of the at least two storage devices with the second lowest determined I/O throughput as a secondary storage device.

15. The computer system of claim 13, wherein the program instructions to determine metrics data for the at least two storage devices in the computing environment comprise program instructions to receive the metrics data for the at least two storage devices in the computing environment.

16. The computer system of claim 13, wherein the metrics data includes a measurement of two or more types of metrics for each of the at least two storage devices.

17. The computer system of claim 16, wherein the two or more types of metrics are selected from the group consisting of read data blocks, written data blocks, total data blocks, queue depth, and network traffic.

18. The computer system of claim 13, wherein the program instructions to adjust the metrics data comprise program instructions to adjust the metrics data using a predefined weighting factor.
