38. A method of radiation detection comprising:
- applying a potential difference between first and second electrodes separated from one another in a gas, wherein the potential difference is sufficient such that ionisation of the gas causes a cascade of charged particles between the electrodes and, interrogating an optical fibre deployed adjacent said first and/or second electrodes to provide a distributed acoustic sensor; and
monitoring said distributed acoustic sensor for signals associated with a cascade of charged particles.
