A passive data storage device for communicating program instructions to a physiological monitor through a sensor port configured to communicate drive signals to light emitting device and receive signals from a detector indicative of light attenuated by patient tissue, the passive data storage device comprising:

  • a connector configured to physically and electrically mate with a sensor port on a physiological monitor, the sensor port configured to communicate drive signals to a light emitting device and receive signals from a detector indicative of light attenuated by patient tissue;

    a nonvolatile memory preprogrammed with program instructions, the program instructions when implemented by the physiological monitor providing updated operational instructions to be executed by the physiological monitor;

    wherein the passive data storage device receives operating power from the sensor port.
