ORBITAL WELDING TORCH SYSTEMS AND METHODS WITH LEAD/LAG ANGLE STOP
First Claim
1. A welder system, comprising:
- an orbital welder having a main body assembly supported adjacent to a workpiece;
a welding torch that includes an electrode that forms a weld joint on the workpiece;
a torch adapter connected to the main body assembly, the torch adapter includes a shaft sleeve;
an adjustment shaft rotatably coupled with the torch adapter via the shaft sleeve;
a lead-lag coupler connected to the adjustment shaft;
at least one stop lug disposed to one side of the lead-lag coupler; and
a rotatable stop set disposed around the shaft sleeve, the rotatable stop set includes a stop pin.

Abstract
The invention described herein generally pertains to systems and methods related to repeatable and accurate setting of welding torch lead and lag positions, particularly with orbital welding systems. Specifically, a torch is coupled with a lead-lag coupler having a stop lug. A stop set with a stop pin is rotated to a desired position of lead or lag and secured. The lead-lag coupler, and torch which rotates therewith, are then unsecured and rotated until the stop lug contacts the stop pin. In this position, the torch is maintained at the desired angle. The stop pin remains in place throughout operation(s) to permit quick, accurate return to the desired angle if the torch is temporarily moved out of position.

15. A method of applying a lead or a lag angle to a welding torch, comprising:
-
rotating a stop set to place a stop pin at a stop pin position associated with a set torch position, the set torch position defined in relation to one of a lead angle or a lag angle; rotating a stop lug of a lead-lag coupler operatively coupled with the welding torch to contact the stop pin; and securing the lead-lag coupler at a lead-lag coupler position associated with the set torch position. - View Dependent Claims (16, 17, 18, 20)
