Abstract

The present disclosure provides, in certain aspects, unique products and methods for abrading or otherwise disrupting an interior surface of a bodily a vessel. In some forms, these products and methods further incorporate the use of one or more occluding members to be deployed in the bodily vessel in and/or around a disrupted vessel region. Abrasive endoluminal devices, in certain embodiments, exhibit a low-profile first condition for delivery into and/or through the vasculature. The device can then be transitioned to a second, expanded condition inside the vasculature for carrying out a desired abrasion. With these types of devices, the manner and design by which the device transitions from a first condition to a second condition can vary. Embodiments of such are disclosed herein.

Claims

1. A medical product for abrading an interior surface of a vascular vessel, the medical product comprising:

an endoluminally advanceable device comprising a linearly compressible segment positioned along a distal region of said device, said linearly compressible segment having a first end and a second end and an intermediate region occurring between said first end and said second end, said intermediate region comprising an outwardly displaceable portion configured to move outwardly toward the interior surface of the vascular vessel when said compressible segment is linearly compressed in the vessel;

said outwardly displaceable portion including one or more abrasive adaptations arranged to abrade the interior surface of the vascular vessel; and

an actuating member coupled to said compressible segment and actuatable to linearly compress said compressible segment in the vessel.

3. The medical product of claim 1, wherein said linearly compressible segment comprises a longitudinal wall segment of said distal region of said endoluminally advanceable device.

4. The medical product of claim 3, wherein said longitudinal wall segment includes one or more weakened portions to facilitate the outward movement of said outwardly displaceable portion.

5. The medical product of claim 1, wherein said endoluminally advanceable device has an interior surface that defines a lumen.

6. The medical product of claim 5, wherein said actuating member is slidably received in said lumen.

8. The medical product of claim 1, wherein said linearly compressible segment is positioned around said endoluminally advanceable device.

9. The medical product of claim 1, wherein said linearly compressible segment is positioned within said endoluminally advanceable device.

10. The medical product of claim 9, wherein said endoluminally advanceable device defines one or more openings in a side wall thereof through which said outwardly displaceable portion can extend.

19. A method for occluding a vascular vessel, comprising:

delivering a medical product to the vascular vessel, said medical product comprising an abrading member and an occluding member, wherein said abrading member is configurable between a first condition arranged for delivery through the vasculature and a second condition arranged for abrading an interior surface of the vascular vessel;

moving said abrading member through the vascular vessel in said second condition so as to abrade the interior surface of the vessel between a first vessel location and a second vessel location; and

removing said abrading member from the vascular vessel with said occluding member remaining in the vessel, wherein a portion of said occluding member resides between the first vessel location and the second vessel location and is in contact with an abraded interior surface of the vessel.

20. The method of claim 19, wherein said moving is effective to pull the occluding member through the vessel.

21. The method of claim 19, wherein said occluding member is compressible and at least a portion of said occluding member is removably positionable in an interior region of said abrading member.

22. The method of claim 19, wherein said occluding member is releasably attached to said abrading member.

23. A medical product for occluding a vascular vessel, the medical product comprising:

an endoluminally advanceable device comprising an abrading member and defining an interior region communicating with a distal opening;

wherein said abrading member has an abrasive exterior surface and is configurable between a first condition arranged for delivery through the vasculature and a second condition arranged for abrading an interior surface of the vascular vessel, wherein in said second condition said abrasive exterior surface is outwardly displaced relative to the configuration in said first condition; and

an occluding member removably positioned in said interior region of said endoluminally advanceable device and deployable from said interior region through said distal opening.

24. The medical product of claim 23, further including an actuating member actuatable to transition said abrading member from said first condition to said second condition.

26. The medical product of claim 23, wherein a portion of said abrading member is fixedly coupled to said endoluminally advanceable device.

27. The medical product of claim 23, wherein said abrading member is received over said endoluminally advanceable device.

28. The medical product of claim 23, wherein said abrading member comprises a longitudinal wall segment of said endoluminally advanceable device.

29. The medical product of claim 23, wherein said abrading member is removably positioned in said interior region in the first condition, and attains the second condition upon removal from the interior region through said distal opening.

30. The medical product of claim 23, wherein said abrading member is positioned proximally of said occluding member in said interior region, and is effective to force the occluding member from the interior region through said distal opening.

31. The medical product of claim 23, wherein the abrading member is positioned over at least part of the occluding member in the interior region of said device.
