Abstract

A surgical retractor includes a plurality of cameras integrated therein. One such retractor includes a tubular retractor and an insert supporting said plurality of cameras can be disposed within a tubular retractor.

Claims

1. A medical apparatus for use with a surgical tubular retractor configured to hold open an incision and thereby provide a pathway for access of surgical tools to a surgical site, the surgical retractor having a first end, a second end, and a longitudinal axis extending between the first and second ends, wherein the pathway extends along the longitudinal axis into the surgical site and the first end is more proximal than the second end, the apparatus comprising:

an imaging insert configured to be received within the tubular retractor, the imaging insert comprising a proximal end and a distal end, wherein the imaging insert is configured to extend along the longitudinal axis of the tubular retractor between the first and second ends of the tubular retractor without substantially obstructing the pathway and maintaining the pathway allowing the surgical tools to gain access to the surgical site through the proximal end of the imaging insert; and

wherein the imaging insert comprises;

a proximal head of the imaging insert at the proximal end, the proximal head configured to be disposed above the first end of the tubular retractor; and

a plurality of cameras inwardly facing toward the pathway; and

wherein the plurality of cameras are disposed on an inner surface of the imaging insert.

2. The medical apparatus of claim 1, wherein the imaging insert further comprises an illumination assembly disposed on an inner surface of the imaging insert.

3. The medical apparatus of claim 1, wherein the imaging insert is substantially tubular and an outer surface of the imaging insert is configured to contact an inner surface of the tubular retractor.

4. The medical apparatus of claim 1, wherein the imaging insert comprises one or more pieces configured to be extending from the proximal head, and wherein an outer surface of the one or more a pieces is configured to contact an inner surface of the tubular retractor.

5. The medical apparatus of claim 1, wherein the imaging insert comprises one or more pieces configured to be disposed adjacent to one another, and wherein an outer surface of the one or more a pieces is configured to contact an inner surface of the tubular retractor.

The medical apparatus of claim 1, wherein the imaging insert comprises one or more annular pieces configured to be disposed adjacent to one another to form a substantially tubular insert, and wherein an outer surface of the one or more annular pieces is configured to contact an inner surface of the tubular retractor.

7. The medical apparatus of claim 1, wherein the imaging insert comprises a restraint configured to prohibit the imaging insert from passing completely through the pathway of the tubular retractor.

8. The medical apparatus of claim 1, wherein the proximal head of the imaging insert is wider than a distal portion of the imaging insert to restrain the imaging insert from passing completely through the pathway of the tubular retractor.

9. The medical apparatus of claim 1, wherein the proximal end of the imaging insert abuts the first end of the tubular retractor and the distal end of the insert is configured to be aligned with the second end of the tubular retractor.

10. The medical apparatus of claim 1, wherein the imaging insert is configured to slidably engage with the tubular retractor.

The medical apparatus of claim 1, wherein the imaging insert comprises a ridge on an outer surface configured to correspond to a groove on an inner surface of the tubular retractor, wherein the groove is configured to receive the ridge and to allow the insert to be slidably engaged with the retractor.

The medical apparatus of claim 1, wherein the imaging insert comprises a groove on an outer surface configured to correspond to a ridge on an inner surface of the tubular retractor, wherein the groove is configured to receive the ridge and to allow the insert to be slidably engaged with the retractor.

13. The medical apparatus of claim 1, wherein at least one of the plurality of cameras are on a flexible cable is configured to be moved between the proximal and distal end of the imaging insert.

The medical apparatus of claim 13, wherein the flexible cable is configured to be fed through a slot on the proximal head of the imaging insert, wherein the at least one of the plurality of cameras on the flexible cable is moved closer or further from the distal end as the flexible cable is raised and lowered within the imaging insert.

15. The medical apparatus of claim 1, further comprising a plurality of connectors on the proximal head of the imaging insert, wherein the plurality of connectors comprise an optical fiber input port, a fluid port, or an air port.

16. The medical apparatus of claim 1, wherein the illumination assembly comprises at least one illumination source, the at least one illumination source comprising light guides or fibers.

17. The medical apparatus of claim 1, wherein the illumination assembly comprises at least one illumination source, the at least one illumination source configured to be longitudinally movable along a length of the imaging insert.

19. An imaging module for disposing on a surgical device, said imaging module configured to provide images of a surgical site within a field-of-view of said imaging module comprising:

at least one optical sensor having at least one active detection area on a front face of said at least one optical sensor;

a first channel comprising first imaging optics configured to focus light from said surgical site onto said at least one active detection area to form left-eye view images of said surgical site on said at least one active detection area, said first imaging optics comprising one or more lenses;

a second channel comprising second imaging optics configured to focus light from said surgical site onto said at least one active detection area to form right-eye view images of said surgical site on said at least one active detection area, said second imaging optics comprising one or more lenses;

redirection optics between said first and second imaging optics and said at least one active detection area, said redirection optics configured to redirect light from said first and second imaging optics to said at least active detection area such that said at least one optical sensor can be oriented so as to reduce obstruction to said surgical site by said at least one optical sensor; and

a mask associated with said at least one optical sensor, said mask configured to partition said at least one active detection area of said at least one optical sensor to define left-eye and right-eye views of said left-eye and right-eye view images.

29. A stereo optical assembly for disposing on a surgical device, said assembly configured to provide stereo imaging of a surgical site within a field-of-view of said stereo optical assembly comprising:

an imaging module comprising;

an optical sensor assembly comprising one or more optical sensors;

a first channel comprising first imaging optics configured to focus light from said surgical site onto said optical sensor assembly to form left-eye view images of said surgical site on said optical sensor assembly, said first imaging optics comprising one or more lenses;

a second channel comprising second imaging optics configured to focus light from said surgical site onto said optical sensor assembly to form right-eye view images of said surgical site on said optical sensor assembly, said second imaging optics comprising one or more lenses;

first redirection optics between said first and second imaging optics and said optical sensor assembly, said first redirection optics configured to redirect light from said first and second imaging optics to said optical sensor assembly such that said optical sensor assembly can be oriented so as to reduce obstruction to said surgical site by said optical sensor assembly; and

second redirection optics configured to redirect light from said surgical site to said first and second imaging optics, said second redirection optics configured to control a convergence angle of the imaging module.

40. A stereo optical assembly for disposing on a surgical device, said assembly configured to provide stereo imaging of a surgical site within a field-of-view of said assembly comprising:

a proximal imaging module at a proximal location, said proximal imaging module configured to provide a first left-eye view and a first right-eye view of said surgical site;

a distal imaging module at a distal location, said distal imaging module configured to provide a second left-eye view and a second right-eye view of said surgical site;

wherein the distal location is configured to be disposed closer to said surgical site than the proximal location; and

wherein an effective separation distance between said first left-eye and right-eye views is larger than an effective separation distance between said second left-eye and right-eye views.
