1. A method of obtaining an improved estimate of respiration rate from two or more cardiac-derived signals representative of respiration comprising the steps of:
- converting the cardiac-derived signals into the frequency domain to generate respective frequency response signals representing the spectral content of the cardiac-derived signals;
point-by-point multiplying together the frequency response signals and identifying the improved estimate of respiration rate from one or more spectral peaks in the product function resulting from the multiplication.

Abstract
At least two waveforms indicative of respiration are extracted from cardiac signals such as PPG or ECG. The extracted waveforms are converted into the frequency domain and multiplied together to form a combined frequency response function representing the frequency content of the combined respiratory waveform. Up to three peaks in the combined frequency response function are identified and averaged to provide an improved estimate of the breathing rate.
