1. A non-transitory, computer readable media having stored thereon instructions for managing power of a hand-held device having a touch sensitive surface providing at least one input element and a sensor, the instructions, when executed by a processing unit of the hand-held device, performing steps comprising:

  • using a signal received from the sensor to determine when the hand-held portable device has been removed from an object surface; and

    causing the hand-held device to transition from a first operational mode to a second operational mode when it is determined from the received signal that that hand-held portable device has been removed from an object surface;

    wherein, in the first operational mode, the instructions cause power to be periodically provided to the sensor at a first time interval and cause the at least one input element provided by the touch sensitive surface to be disabled and, in the second operational mode, the instruction cause power to be periodically provided to the sensor at a second time interval longer than the first time interval and cause the at least one input element provided by the touch sensitive surface to be enabled whereupon the instructions will further cause the hand-held device to perform an action in response to user interactions with the enabled at least one input element.
