Abstract

Systems and methods for managing power on an electric power grid including a server for communicating IP-based messages over a network with distributed power consuming devices and/or power supplying devices, the IP-based messages including information relating to activities by the power consuming devices and/or the power supplying devices; and wherein the information is transformed by the system into settlement grade data corresponding to the activities of the power consuming devices and/or the power supplying devices.

Claims

1. A system for managing power information on an electric power grid comprising:

a server having a processor coupled with a memory, and constructed and configured for communication over a network for communicating IP-based messages with power consuming devices and/or power supplying devices;

a database for storing information relating to power consumed or supplied by the power consuming or supplying devices and the amount of power available to be reduced or supplied to each of the power consuming devices and/or power supplying devices;

wherein the IP-based messages include information relating to activities by the power consuming devices and/or the power supplying devices;

and wherein the information is transformed by the system into settlement grade data corresponding to the activities of the power consuming devices and/or the power supplying devices.

2. The system of claim 1, further comprising a smart meter interface operable to communicate with a smart meter and the server via IP-based messages.

The system of claim 2 wherein the smart meter is operable to send to the smart meter interface a reply to a Read Meters command sent by the smart meter interface, wherein upon receiving the reply, the smart meter interface is operable to format the reply and send the formatted reply to the server.

4. The system of claim 1, wherein the IP-based messages provide for settlement of a curtailment by at least one of the power consuming devices at the time of or approximate to the time of the curtailment.

5. The system of claim 1, wherein the system is operable for providing revenue grade metrology in real-time, near real-time, or the timing required by a grid operator entity for generating operating reserves for grid stability.

6. The system of claim 1, further comprising a plurality of consumer profiles corresponding to the plurality of power consuming devices, wherein the plurality of the consumer profiles are operable to be aggregated by an energy management system (EMS) and/or the server;

wherein the EMS and/or the server is operable to calculate an operating reserve based on a curtailment of power to the plurality of power consuming devices associated with the plurality of consumer profiles;

wherein the EMS and/or the server is further operable to send IP-based communications to the plurality of the power consuming devices associated with the plurality of consumer profiles, wherein the plurality of power consuming devices are operable to curtail power consumption after receipt of the IP-based communications to create the operating reserve.

7. The system of claim 1, wherein the power consuming devices include an environmentally-dependent device, the environmentally-dependent device including at least one of a thermostat, a washer, a dryer, a hot water heater, a HVAC unit, a fan, a pool pump, and a smart thermostat.

8. The system of claim 1, further comprising at least one remote terminal unit for controlling assets for an energy management system (EMS).

28. The system of claim 7 further comprising a database for storing information relating to power consumed by the power consuming devices and the amount of electric power available to be reduced to each of the power consuming devices.

9. A system for managing power information on an electric power grid comprising:

a server having a processor coupled with a memory, and constructed and configured for communication over a network for communicating IP-based messages with power consuming devices and/or power supplying devices, wherein the IP-based messages include information relating to activities by the power consuming devices and/or the power supplying devices;

at least one active load client operable to control at least one of the power consuming devices and/or at least one of the power supplying devices and receive at least one IP-based power reduction message including information relating to an amount of electric power to be reduced for the at least one power consuming device;

wherein the at least one active load client is further operable to automatically reduce the amount of power supplied to the at least one power consuming device in response to the at least one IP-based power reduction message;

wherein the at least one power consuming device has a corresponding power supply value (PSV) for a period of time of the reduced amount of power supplied;

wherein the information included in the IP-based messages is transformed by the system into settlement grade data.

10. The system of claim 9, wherein the settlement grade data includes data corresponding to the reduction in the amount of power supplied to the at least one power consuming device.

The system of claim 9, wherein the at least one active load client is operable to send an IP-based load status message to a utility control center, wherein the IP-based load status message includes at least one of a power consumption indicator and a power management status associated with the at least one power consuming device.

12. The system of claim 9, wherein the IP-based power reduction message includes instructions for managing power control events.

13. The system of claim 10, wherein the instructions for managing power control events include alternating reduction in power to the power consuming devices based upon profiles associated with each of the power consuming devices.

14. The system of claim 9, wherein the IP-based message includes a power inquiry command requesting the server to determine an amount of electric power available for temporary reduction from supply by a requesting electric utility, a market participant, or electric power grid operator(s).

The system of claim 14, wherein the processor is operable to issue a power control event message responsive to the power inquiry command, and wherein a database is operable to store current power usage information for the requesting electric utility, the market participant, or the electric power grid operator(s).

16. The system of claim 9, wherein the power consuming devices and power supplying devices are operable for cross-communication with other power consuming and other supplying devices over a network via IP-based messaging.

17. The system of claim 9, wherein the communication standards for the IP-based messages include at least one of inter-control center communications protocol (ICCP) and master supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA).

The system of claim 9, wherein the IP-based messages are transmitted via at least one of Ethernet, first generation wireless communications methods, second generation communications methods such as Code Division Multiple Access (1XRT) and Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution (EDGE), third generation protocols such as Evolution for Data Only (EVDO) and High Speed Packet Access (HSPA), fourth generation protocols such as Long Term Evolution (LTE), IEEE 802.11 (X), and WiFi, any derivative standard approved by the IEEE, the International Telecommunications Union, or any domestic or international standard body, and any proprietary protocols that contain an Internet Protocol packet.

The system of claim 9 further comprising a device control manager operable for communicating IP-based messages with the server, wherein the IP-based messages include at least one of temperature set points for thermally controlled power consuming devices, time intervals during which load control is permitted or prohibited, dates during which load control is permitted or prohibited, and priorities of power consuming device control.

20. The system of claim 9 further comprising at least one remote terminal unit for controlling assets for an energy management system (EMS).

21. The system of claim 20, wherein the at least one remote terminal unit is operable to control assets using proprietary client software or web-based client software.

22. The system of claim 9, wherein the PSV is provided responsive to an energy management system (EMS) for providing grid stability and reliability.

23. The system of claim 9, wherein the automatic reduction in the amount of power supplied to the at least one power consuming creates an operating reserve, wherein a multiplicity of operating reserves are operable to be aggregated to act as one resource through an energy management system (EMS).

24. The system of claim 23, wherein the operating reserve is at least one of a non-spinning reserve, a spinning reserve, and a regulating reserve.

25. The system of claim 9, wherein the electric power grid includes a microgrid, the microgrid including a plurality of power consuming devices, wherein each of the plurality of power consuming devices includes a customer profile associated with the power consuming device.

26. The system of claim 25, wherein the customer profile includes a status and is operable to change states based upon instructions provided by a market participant via an interface of any web-enabled device.

27. The system of claim 26, wherein the states include compliance information necessary for the market participant to maintain grid stability and reliability and/or information relating to measurement, verification, telemetry, settlement, or PSV.

29. An apparatus for managing power information on an electric power grid comprising:

a server having a processor coupled with a memory, and constructed and configured for communication over a network for communicating IP-based messages containing power information with at least one power consuming device, wherein at least one of the IP-based messages containing power information is at least one IP-based power reduction message, wherein the at least one IP-based power reduction message specifies an amount of electric power to be reduced to the at least one power consuming device;

wherein the amount of power supplied to the at least one power consuming device is automatically reduced in response to the at least one IP-based power reduction message;

wherein the at least one power consuming device has a corresponding power supply value (PSV) for a period of time of the reduced amount of power supplied; and

wherein the power information included in the IP-based messages is transformed into settlement grade data.
