Abstract

A first wireless communication device receives device-to-device D2D control information from a base station in a cellular communication system and sends second device D2D control data to a second wireless communication device. The second device control data may comprise resources information and is used for establishing a D2D communication over a link between the first wireless communication device and the second wireless communication device; the second device D2D control data is at least partially based on the D2D control information.

Claims

1. A method comprising:

receiving device-to-device (D2D) control information at a first wireless communication device over a macrocell communication link from a base station;

determining second device D2D control data at least partially from the D2D control information; and

transmitting the second device D2D control data to a second wireless communication device, the second device D2D control data identifying a subset of defined macrocell communication resources as D2D communication resources for transmission of D2D signals between the first wireless communication device and the second wireless communication device.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the second device D2D control data identities D2D communication resources for transmission of signals from the first wireless communication device to the second wireless communication device.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the second device D2D control data identifies D2D communication resources for transmission of signals from the second wireless communication device to the first wireless communication device.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the D2D control information identifies frequency-time communication resources.

5. The method of claim 4, wherein the D2D control information identifies at least one of Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) parameters, Modulation Order parameters, Coding Rate parameters, and Power Control parameters.

6. The method of claim 4, further comprising:

determining physical format parameters comprising at least one of Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) parameters, Modulation Order parameters, Coding Rate parameters, and Power Control parameters, wherein the second device D2D control data comprises the physical format parameters.

7. The method of claim 6, further comprising:

measuring a reference signal transmitted from the second wireless communication device to determine channel characteristics of a D2D communication link between the first wireless communication device and the second wireless communication device, wherein determining the physical format parameters comprises determining the physical format parameters at least partially based on the channel characteristics.

8. The method of claim 6, further comprising:

receiving, at the first wireless communication device, second device D2D link data from the second wireless communication device, wherein determining the physical format parameters comprises determining the physical format parameters at least partially based on the second device D2D link data.

9. The method of claim 8, wherein the second device D2D link information comprises a Buffer Status Report.

10. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

receiving, at the first wireless communication device, second device D2D link data from the second wireless communication device; and

sending, to the base station, D2D link information at least partially based on the second device D2D control data to invoke transmission of the D2D control information from the base station to the first wireless communication device.

11. The method of claim 10, wherein the D2D link information is at least partially based on first device D2D link data comprising a channel characteristic.

12. The method of claim 10, wherein the D2D link information is at least partially based on first device D2D link data comprising a Buffer Status Report.

13. The method of claim 1 wherein the transmitting the second device D2D control data to the second wireless communication device comprises transmitting a reference signal in accordance with system timing provided by the base station, the reference signal providing the system timing to the second wireless communication device.

14. A method performed at a first device-to-device (D2D) wireless communication device, the method comprising:

deriving system timing of a macrocell communication system from a macrocell reference signal received from a base station;

transmitting a reference signal to a second D2D wireless communication device over a D2D communication link using D2D communication resources that are a subset of defined macrocell communication resources defined by a communication specification for the macrocell system, the reference signal providing the system timing to the second D2D wireless communication device.

15. The method of claim 14, comprising:

receiving a D2D signal from the second D2D wireless communication device, the D2D signal synchronized to the system timing.

16. A method comprising:

receiving, over a device-to-device (D2D) communication link, a D2D reference signal transmitted from a wireless communication device, the reference signal transmitted in accordance with system timing of a macrocell communication system determined from timing information transmitted from a base station of the macrocell communication system to the wireless communication device, the D2D communication link using D2D communication resources that are a subset of defined macrocell communication resources defined by a communication specification for the macrocell communication system;

deriving the system timing from the D2D reference signal; and

transmitting a signal synchronized to system timing.

17. The method of claim 16, wherein transmitting the signal comprises transmitting a D2D signal to the wireless communication device.

18. The method of claim 17, wherein the timing information transmitted from the base station is derived by the wireless communication device from a macrocell reference signal transmitted from the base station.
