Abstract

Various operations may be performed based on a distance-related function associated with two or more devices. For example, an association procedure for two or more devices may be based on one or more determined distances. Similarly, presence management may be based on one or more determined distances. A distance-related function may take various form including, for example, a distance between devices, two or more distances between devices, a rate of change in a relative distance between devices, relative acceleration between devices, or some combination of two or more of the these distance-related functions.

Claims

1. An apparatus for wireless communications, comprising:

a receiver configured to receive at least one signal from a remote device by way of a wireless medium;

an indication generator configured to;

generate a first indication related to a distance between the apparatus and the remote device based on the at least one signal;

generate a second indication related to a motion of the remote device relative to the apparatus based on the at least one signal; and

a processor configured to perform an operation based on the first and second indications.

2. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the processor is configured to perform the operation based on the first indication indicating that the distance is below a predetermined threshold.

3. The apparatus of claim 2, wherein the processor is configured to perform the operation based on the second indication indicating that the motion is compliant with a predetermined motion specification.

4. The apparatus of claim 3, wherein the processor is configured to perform the operation based on the second indication indicating that the motion comprises the remote device and the apparatus being brought closer to each other and then further away from each other.

5. The apparatus of claim 2, wherein the processor is configured to perform the operation based on the second indication indicating that the motion comprises a pattern of distances between the apparatus and the remote device that is compliant with a predetermined pattern of distances.

6. The apparatus of claim 2, wherein the processor is configured to perform the operation based on the second indication indicating that the motion comprises an acceleration of the remote device relative to the apparatus that is compliant with a predetermined relative acceleration specification.

7. The apparatus of claim 2, wherein the processor is configured to perform the operation based on the second indication indicating that the motion comprises a velocity of the remote device relative to the apparatus that is compliant with a predetermined relative velocity specification.

8. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising a transmitter, wherein the operation performed by the processor comprises transmitting a signal to the remote device for associating the apparatus with the remote device, the signal being transmitted by way of the wireless medium.

9. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising a transmitter, wherein the operation performed by the processor comprises transmitting a signal to the remote device for authenticating the remote device such that application-level communications is enabled between the apparatus and the remote device, the signal being transmitted by way of the wireless medium.

10. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising a transmitter, wherein the operation performed by the processor comprises transmitting a signal to the remote device, wherein the signal comprises application-level communications, the signal being transmitted by way of the wireless medium.

11. A method for wireless communications, comprising:

receiving, by a first device, at least one signal from a second device by way of a wireless medium;

generating, by the first device, a first indication related to a distance between the first device and the second device based on the at least one signal;

generating, by the first device, a second indication related to a motion of the second device relative to the first device based on the at least one signal; and

performing, by the first device, an operation based on the first and second indications.

12. The method of claim 11, wherein performing the operation is based on the first indication indicating that the distance is below a predetermined threshold.

13. The method of claim 12, wherein performing the operation is based on the second indication indicating that the motion is compliant with a predetermined motion specification.

14. The method of claim 12, wherein performing the operation is based on the second indication indicating that the motion comprises the first and second devices being brought closer to each other and then further away from each other.

15. The method of claim 12, wherein performing the operation is based on the second indication indicating that the motion comprises a pattern of relative distances between the first and second devices that is compliant with a predetermined pattern of relative distances.

16. The method of claim 12, wherein performing the operation is based on the second indication indicating that the motion comprises an acceleration of the second device relative to the first device that is compliant with a predetermined relative acceleration specification.

17. The method of claim 12, wherein performing the operation is based on the second indication indicating that a velocity of the second device relative to the first device is compliant with a predetermined relative velocity specification.

18. The method of claim 11, wherein performing the operation comprises transmitting, by the first device, a signal to the second device for associating the first device with the second device, the signal being transmitted by way of the wireless medium.

19. The method of claim 11, wherein performing the operation comprises transmitting, by the first device, a signal to the remote device for authenticating the second device such that application-level communications is enabled between the first and second devices, the signal being transmitted by way of the wireless medium.

20. The method of claim 11, wherein performing the operation comprises transmitting, by the first device, a signal to the second device, wherein the signal comprises application-level communications, the signal being transmitted by way of the wireless medium.

21. An apparatus for wireless communications, comprising:

means for receiving at least one signal from a remote device by way of a wireless medium;

means for generating a first indication related to a distance between the apparatus and the remote device based on the at least one signal;

means for generating a second indication related to a motion of the remote device relative to the apparatus based on the at least one signal; and

means for performing an operation based on the first and second indications.

22. An apparatus for wireless communications, comprising:

a receiver configured to receive at least one signal from a remote device by way of a wireless medium;

an indication generator configured to;

generate a first indication related to a distance between the apparatus and the remote device based on the at least one signal;

generate a second indication related to a motion of the remote device relative to the apparatus based on the at least one signal;

a processor configured to generate audio data for transmission based on the first and second indications; and

a transmitter configured to transmit a signal comprising the audio data to the remote device by way of the wireless medium.
