Abstract

A medical device may include a distal end having an expandable grasping portion with a plurality of movable branch members, and at least one filament connected to and slidably movable within at least a portion of the plurality of movable branch members. The proximal end of the device may include a handle having an actuation guide and an actuation selector connected to and movable along the actuation guide. The actuation selector may be coupled to ends of the at least one filament and may be configured to exert a force on the filament to vary the size of the grasping portion between a plurality of pre-selected discrete configurations of the grasping portion. In addition, the medical device may include a sheath member extending from the distal end toward the proximal end. The proximal ends of the plurality of movable branch members may be disposed within the sheath member.

Claims

1. A medical device, comprising:

a distal end including an expandable grasping portion having a plurality of movable branch members having a lumen, and at least one filament connected to and slidably movable within at least a portion of the plurality of movable branch members;

a proximal end including a handle having an actuation guide and an actuation selector connected to and movable along the actuation guide, wherein the actuation selector is coupled to ends of the filament and is configured to exert a force on the filament to vary the size of the grasping portion between a plurality of pre-selected discrete configurations of the grasping portion; and

a sheath member extending from the distal end toward the proximal end, wherein proximal ends of the plurality of movable branch members are disposed within the sheath member.

2. The medical device of claim 1, wherein the at least one filament is a single filament having portions extending through the lumen of each of the plurality of branch members and coupled to the actuation selector.

The medical device of claim 1, wherein the at least one filament comprises a first and second filament, the first filament extends through the lumen of a first set of branch members and is coupled to the actuation selector, and the second filament extends through the lumen of a second set of branch members and is coupled to the actuation selector.

4. The medical device of claim 1, wherein each branch member is pre-bent to extend radially from a longitudinal axis when a force is not applied to the plurality of movable branch members.

5. The medical device of claim 1, wherein a distal portion of each of the plurality movable branch members has a linear neutral position when a force is not applied to the plurality of movable branch members.

6. The device of claim 1, wherein distal portions of the at least one filament extend from the distal apertures of the plurality of movable branch members and intersect at an apex.

7. The device of claim 6, wherein the distal portions of the at least one filament intersecting at the apex are connected to each other.

8. The device of claim 7, wherein the distal portions of the at least one filament intersecting at the apex and connected to each other are connected via a knot.

9. The device of claim 1, wherein the actuation selector is connected to each of the ends of the at least one filament via a drive-wire.

10. The device of claim 1, wherein the force exerted by the actuation selector on the at least one filament extends or retracts the filament from distal apertures of the plurality movable branch members.

11. The device of claim 1, wherein the actuation guide comprises notches corresponding to a discrete configuration of the grasping portion.

12. The device of claim 11, wherein the notches further correspond to a pre-determined length of the at least one filament to be retracted or extended.

13. A medical device, comprising:

A distal end including an expandable grasping portion having plurality movable branch members, having a lumen, and at least two filaments each connected to and slidably movable within at least a portion of the plurality movable branch members;

a proximal end including a handle having an actuation guide and an actuation selector connected and movable along the actuation guide, wherein the actuation selector is coupled to each end of the two or more filaments and is configured to exert a force on the two or more filaments to vary the size of the grasping portion between a plurality of pre-selected discrete configurations of the grasping portion; and

a sheath member extending from the distal end toward the proximal end, wherein proximal ends of the plurality of movable branch members are disposed within the sheath member.

The medical device of claim 13, wherein the at least two filaments comprise a first and second filament, the first filament extends through the lumen of a first set of branch members and is coupled to the actuation selector, and the second filament extends through the lumen of a second set of branch members and is coupled to the actuation selector.

15. The medical device of claim 13, wherein a proximal end of each of the plurality of movable branch members are parallel and adjacent to each other.

16. The medical device of claim 13, wherein each branch member is pre-bent to extend radially from a longitudinal axis when a force is not applied to the plurality of movable branch members.

17. The device of claim 13, wherein distal portions of the at least two filaments extend from distal apertures of the plurality movable branch members and intersect at an apex.

18. The device of claim 13, wherein the force exerted by the actuation selector on the at least two filaments extends or retracts the at least two filaments from distal apertures of the movable branch members.

19. The device of claim 13, wherein the actuation guide comprises notches corresponding to the pre-selected discrete configurations of the grasping portion and a length of the two or more filaments to be retracted or extended.

20. A medical device, comprising:

a distal end including an expandable grasping portion having plurality movable branch members having a lumen, and at least one filament connected to and slidably movable within at least a portion of the plurality movable branch members;

a proximal end including a handle having an actuation guide and at least two actuation selectors connected to and movable along the actuation guide, wherein the at least two actuation selectors are connected to ends of the at least one filament and are configured to exert a force on the at least one filament to vary the size of the grasping portion between a plurality of pre-selected, discrete configurations at the grasping portion; and

a sheath member extending from the distal end toward the proximal end, wherein proximal ends of the plurality of movable branch members are disposed within the sheath member.
