Abstract

An image forming apparatus includes an image bearing member, a process member that acts on the image bearing member, a voltage application unit that applies a voltage to the process member, a current detection unit that detects an electric current that flows to the image bearing member, and a control unit that causes the voltage application unit to apply voltages respectively having positive and negative polarities to the process member, to determine a surface potential of the image bearing member based on a detection result acquired by the current detection unit, and to output information about a usage amount of the image bearing member according to the determined result.

Claims

1. An image forming apparatus comprising:

an image bearing member;

a charging member configured to charge the image bearing member;

a transfer member configured to transfer an image formed on the image bearing member;

a voltage application unit configured to apply a voltage to the transfer member;

a current detection unit configured to detect an electric current that flows to the image bearing member; and

a control unit configured to cause the voltage application unit to apply voltages respectively having positive and negative polarities to the transfer member, to determine a surface potential of the image bearing member based on a detection result acquired by the current detection unit, and to output information about a usage amount of the image bearing member according to the determined result.

2. The image forming apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the control unit determines the usage amount of the image bearing member based on a result of a comparison between the determined surface potential and a threshold value.

3. The image forming apparatus according to claim 2, wherein the threshold value corresponds to a usage state of a user using the image forming apparatus.

4. The image forming apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the control unit detects an abnormality of the image bearing member based on a result of a comparison between the detection result acquired by the current detection unit and a threshold value.

The image forming apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the control unit determines a first voltage to start discharge between the image bearing member and the transfer member from the detection result acquired by the current detection unit when the voltage having the positive polarity is applied to the transfer member, determines a second voltage to start discharge between the image bearing member and the transfer member from the detection result acquired by the current detection unit when the voltage having the negative polarity is applied to the transfer member, and calculates the surface potential based on the determined first voltage and the determined second voltage.

6. An image forming apparatus comprising:

an image bearing member;

a process member configured to act on the image bearing member;

a voltage application unit configured to apply a voltage to the process member;

a current detection unit configured to detect an electric current that flows to the image bearing member; and

a control unit configured to cause the voltage application unit to apply voltages respectively having positive and negative polarities to the process member, and to determine whether a surface of the image bearing member has an abnormality based on a detection result acquired by the current detection unit.

7. The image forming apparatus according to claim 6, wherein, the control unit determines a surface potential of the image bearing member to be abnormal based on a detection result acquired by the current detection unit when the surface potential is less than a threshold value.

8. The image forming apparatus according to claim 7, wherein the abnormality includes a scratch or a pinhole on the image bearing member.

The image forming apparatus according to claim 6, wherein the control unit determines a first voltage to start discharge between the image bearing member and the process member from the detection result acquired by the current detection unit when the voltage having the positive polarity is applied to the process member, determines a second voltage to start discharge between the image bearing member and the process member from the detection result acquired by the current detection unit when the voltage having the negative polarity is applied to the process member, and calculates the surface potential based on the determined first voltage and the determined second voltage.

10. An image forming system comprising:

an image forming apparatus; and

a computer connected to the image forming apparatus,

wherein the image forming apparatus comprises;

an image bearing member;

a process member configured to act on the image bearing member;

a voltage application unit configured to apply a voltage to the process member;

a current detection unit configured to detect an electric current that flows to the image bearing member; and

a control unit configured to cause the voltage application unit to apply voltages respectively having positive and negative polarities to the process member, and to output information about a detection result acquired by the current detection unit to the computer,

wherein the computer determines a usage state of the image bearing member based on the result output from the control unit.

11. The image forming system according to claim 10, wherein the image bearing member and the process member are attachable to and detachable from the image forming apparatus as an integrated cartridge,

wherein the information about the detection result includes a surface potential of the image bearing member, and

wherein, when the computer determines that the image bearing member reaches end of lifetime based on a comparison between the surface potential and a threshold value, the computer outputs information about replacement of the integrated cartridge.

12. The image forming system according to claim 11, wherein the information about replacement of the integrated cartridge includes a scheduled shipping date of a cartridge.

13. The image forming system according to claim 11,

wherein the information about the detection result includes a surface potential of the image bearing member, and

wherein the computer determines a usage amount of the image bearing member based on a comparison between the surface potential and a threshold value, and outputs the information about replacement of the integrated cartridge based on the determined result.

14. The image forming system according to claim 10, wherein the computer determines whether a surface of the image bearing member has an abnormality based on the information about the detection result.
