Abstract

Vehicle event recorders are arranged with integrated web servers to provide a simple user interface and control mechanism which may be address with commonly available hardware and software. A vehicle event recorder of these inventions couples to a network having a workstation node. The workstation having either of the many available web browsers can be used to view, address, control, perform data transfer, et cetera, by way of data exchange in accordance with simple IP protocols. A vehicle equipped with these systems returns to a household to make a network connection. A local server is used to see all exposed system controls as provided by predefined web pages provided by a web server integrated as part of the vehicle event recorder unit.

21. A vehicle event recorder comprising:

a video camera configured to acquire visual information representing a vehicle environment, the vehicle environment including spaces in and around an interior and an exterior of a vehicle;

a memory configured to electronically store information;

an event trigger configured to detect a vehicle event responsive to an event parameter breaching an event trigger threshold level; and

a microprocessor configured to;

responsive to detection of the vehicle event, effectuate storage of visual information associated with the vehicle event in the memory;

facilitate wireless communication of information between the vehicle event recorder and a remotely located computing device using HTTP; and

adjust vehicle event recorder settings based on settings information received from the remotely located computing device, the vehicle event recorder settings associated with one or more of the video camera, the memory, or the event trigger.

22. The vehicle event recorder of claim 21, wherein the microprocessor is further configured to cause communication of the visual information associated with the vehicle event stored in the memory to the remotely located computing device.

23. The vehicle event recorder of claim 22, wherein the remotely located computing device:

determines adjustments to the vehicle event recorder settings based on one or more previously detected vehicle events, the one or more previously detected vehicle events including the vehicle event detected by the event trigger; and

communicates settings information indicating the determined adjustments to the microprocessor, and

wherein the microprocessor adjusts the vehicle event recorder settings based on the settings information received from the remotely located computing device.

24. The vehicle event recorder of claim 21, wherein the microprocessor is further configured to adjust the vehicle event recorder settings based on settings information received from a user via the remotely located computing device.

The vehicle event recorder of claim 24, wherein the microprocessor is further configured such that facilitating wireless communication includes generating one or more web pages for presentation to the user via a web browser on the remotely located computing device, the one or more web pages configured to receive entry and/or selection of the settings information from the user.

26. The vehicle event recorder of claim 25, wherein the microprocessor is further configured such that the one or more web pages comprise one or more fields configured to receive entry and/or selection of the settings information from the user.

The vehicle event recorder of claim 21, wherein the microprocessor is further configured such that the vehicle event recorder settings include an event trigger threshold level, the event trigger threshold level adjusted based on threshold settings information received from the remotely located computing device, the threshold settings information entered and/or selected by a user via a trigger threshold control field presented by the remotely located computing device, the threshold settings information indicating a desired event trigger threshold level from the user.

The vehicle event recorder of claim 27, wherein the microprocessor is further configured such that the trigger threshold control field facilitates adjustment of a sensitivity of the event trigger, wherein adjusting a sensitivity of the event trigger comprises an increase and/or decrease in the event trigger threshold level made directly by the user via the trigger threshold control field.

29. The vehicle event recorder of claim 28, wherein the microprocessor is further configured such that the trigger threshold control field includes a web page object control button configured to be manipulated by the user to adjust the sensitivity of the event trigger.

The vehicle event recorder of claim 21, further comprising an output port configured to facilitate the wireless communication between the vehicle event recorder and the remotely located computing device, the microprocessor further configured such that the vehicle event recorder settings are associated with one or more of the video camera, the memory, the event trigger, or the output port.

31. A computer implemented method for adjusting vehicle event recorder settings with the vehicle event recorder, the vehicle event recorder comprising a video camera, a memory, an event trigger, and a processor, the method comprising:

acquiring, with the video camera, visual information representing a vehicle environment, the vehicle environment including spaces in and around an interior and an exterior of a vehicle;

detecting, with the event trigger, a vehicle event responsive to an event parameter breaching an event trigger threshold level;

responsive to detecting the vehicle event, effectuate, with the processor, storage of visual information associated with the vehicle event in an electronic memory;

facilitating, with the processor, wireless communication of information between the vehicle event recorder and a remotely located computing device using HTTP; and

adjusting, with the processor, vehicle event recorder settings based on settings information received from the remotely located computing device, the vehicle event recorder settings associated with one or more of the video camera, the memory, or the event trigger.

32. The method of claim 31, further comprising causing communication of the visual information associated with the vehicle event stored in the memory to the remotely located computing device.

33. The method of claim 32, further comprising:

determining adjustments to the vehicle event recorder settings based on one or more previously detected vehicle events; and

communicating settings information indicating the determined adjustments,

wherein the vehicle event recorder settings are adjusted based on the communicated settings information.

34. The method of claim 31, further comprising adjusting the vehicle event recorder settings based on settings information received from a user via the remotely located computing device.

The method of claim 34, wherein facilitating wireless communication includes generating one or more web pages for presentation to the user via a web browser on the remotely located computing device, the one or more web pages configured to receive entry and/or selection of the settings information from the user.

36. The method of claim 35, wherein the one or more web pages comprise one or more fields configured to receive entry and/or selection of the settings information from the user.

37. The method of claim 31, wherein the vehicle event recorder settings include an event trigger threshold level, the event trigger threshold level adjusted based on threshold settings information received from the remotely located computing device, the threshold settings information entered and/or selected by a user via a trigger threshold control field presented by the remotely located computing device, the threshold settings information indicating a desired event trigger threshold level from the user.

The method of claim 37, wherein the trigger threshold control field facilitates adjustment of a sensitivity of the event trigger, wherein adjusting a sensitivity of the event trigger comprises an increase and/or decrease in the event trigger threshold level made directly by the user via the trigger threshold control field.

39. The method of claim 38, wherein the trigger threshold control field includes a web page object control button configured to be manipulated by the user to adjust the sensitivity of the event trigger.

40. The method of claim 41, further comprising facilitating the wireless communication between the vehicle event recorder and the remotely located computing device with an output port of the vehicle event recorder, wherein the vehicle event recorder settings are associated with one or more of the video camera, the memory, the event trigger, or the output port.
