Abstract

A method of sorting and displaying data on a portable electronic device includes: determining geographical coordinates of the portable electronic device, providing search criteria to the portable electronic device, performing a search in a database based on the search criteria resulting in a list of database records, determining a search area of the portable electronic device and displaying selected records from the list of database records on a display screen of the portable electronic device. Each of the selected records is located within a search radius, which originates at the geographical coordinates of the portable electronic device, and within the search area, which is determined based on a pointing direction of the portable electronic device.

21. A non-transitory computer-readable medium containing instructions executable by a processor of a portable electronic device to configure the portable electronic device to:

determine geographical coordinates of the portable electronic device;

send a search request to a server to cause the server to perform a search at the server based on search criteria and a radius extending from the geographical coordinates of the portable electronic device;

receive, at the portable electronic device, a plurality of search results from the server;

determine a pointing direction of the portable electronic device;

determine a search area based on the pointing direction of the portable electronic device; and

display one or more results from the plurality of search results on a display of the portable electronic device, the one or more results having geographic coordinates located within the search area.

22. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 21, wherein the search area is a sector of a circle that is defined by the radius.

23. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 21, wherein the search area is a rectangle.

24. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 21, wherein the pointing direction is a pointing direction of a forward end of the portable electronic device.

25. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 21, wherein the search request further includes at least one search parameter.

26. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 25, wherein the search parameter is a category for the plurality of search results.

27. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 25, wherein the search parameter is configured to represent at least one of a name, a telephone number, a location category, a type of food, an address, a residence, a business, a medical clinic, a government office, and a landmark.

28. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 21, further comprising instructions configured to display the one or more results on a map.

29. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 21, wherein the search request comprises input received at the portable electronic device.

30. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 21, wherein the search request comprises the geographical coordinates of the portable electronic device.

31. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 21, further comprising instructions configured to, when determining a change in the pointing direction, determine an updated search area based on the changed pointing direction and display an updated one or more results from the plurality of search results on the display, the updated one or more results having geographic coordinates located within the updated search area.

38. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 31, further comprising instructions configured to display the one or more results on a map.

39. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 31, wherein the search request comprises input received at the portable electronic device.

40. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 31, wherein the search request comprises the geographical coordinates of the portable electronic device.

The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 31, further comprising instructions configured to, when determining a change in the pointing direction, determine an updated search area based on the changed pointing direction and display an updated one or more results from the plurality of search results on the display, the updated one or more results having geographic coordinates located within the updated search area.

32. A non-transitory computer-readable medium containing instructions executable by a processor of a portable electronic device to configure the portable electronic device to:

determine geographical coordinates of the portable electronic device;

determine a pointing direction of the portable electronic device;

calculate a search area based on the pointing direction and a search radius, the search radius extending from the geographical coordinates of the portable electronic device;

send a search request to a server to cause the server to perform a search at the server based on the search request;

receive, at the portable electronic device, a plurality of search results meeting the search request from the server; and

display one or more results from the plurality of search results meeting the search request on a display of the portable electronic device, the one or more results having geographic coordinates located within the search area.

33. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 32, wherein the search area is a sector of a circle that is defined by the search radius.

34. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 32, wherein the pointing direction is a pointing direction of a forward end of the portable electronic device.

35. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 32, wherein the search request further includes at least one search parameter.

36. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 35, wherein the search parameter is a category for the plurality of search results.

37. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 35, wherein the search parameter is configured to represent at least one of a name, a telephone number, a location category, a type of food, an address, a residence, a business, a medical clinic, a government office, and a landmark.

42. A non-transitory computer-readable medium containing instructions executable by a processor of a portable electronic device to configure the portable electronic device to:

determine geographical coordinates of the portable electronic device;

determine a pointing direction of the portable electronic device;

send a search request to a server to cause the server to perform a search based on the search request, the search resulting in a plurality of search results;

receive the plurality of search results from the server;

determine a search area based on the pointing direction of the portable electronic device; and

display one or more results from the plurality of search results, the one or more results having geographic coordinates located within the search area.

43. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 42, wherein the search area is a sector of a circle bisected by the pointing direction.

44. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 42, wherein the pointing direction is a pointing direction of a forward end of the portable electronic device.

45. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 42, wherein the search request further includes at least one search parameter.

46. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 45, wherein the search parameter is a category for the plurality of search results.

47. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 45, wherein the search parameter is configured to represent at least one of a name, a telephone number, a location category, a type of food, an address, a residence, a business, a medical clinic, a government office, and a landmark.

48. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 42, further comprising instructions configured to display the one or more results on a map.

49. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 42, wherein the search request comprises the geographical coordinates of the portable electronic device.

The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 42, further comprising instructions configured to, when determining a change in the pointing direction, determine an updated search area based on the changed pointing direction and displaying an updated one or more results from the plurality of search results on the display, the updated one or more results having geographic coordinates located within the updated search area.
