Abstract

Problems of bandwidth utilization and delay, with a computer having a wirelessly connected display, are addressed by having the computer instruct a display device to access content from remote resources and combine that content with content processed locally at the computer and sent to the display device. The display device includes a processor, or display computer, associated with a display. When the computer transmits data to the display device, the data includes information indicating the resource, such as a server accessible over a computer network, which stores the content to be displayed. The processor associated with the display uses this information to access the content directly from its resource. The processor associated with the display can be embedded in the housing for the display or can be housed in a separate housing that is electrically connected directly to the display.

Claims

1. A computer-implemented process comprising:

identifying content from a first resource remote from a computer;

identifying content in storage locally connected to the computer;

transmitting, from the computer, a resource identifier and display coordinates for the content from the first resource to a display device wirelessly connected to the computer;

transmitting, from the computer, the content from local storage to the display device.

2. The computer-implemented process of claim 1, further comprising

identifying authentication parameters for accessing content from a second resource remote from the computer;

transmitting, from the computer, a resource identifier, the authentication parameters, and display coordinates for the content from the second resource to the display device.

3. The computer-implemented process of claim 1, wherein the display device is connected via a Wi-Fi Direct compliant wireless connection.

4. The computer-implemented process of claim 3, wherein the resource identifier and content from local storage are transmitted in a beacon packet.

5. The computer-implemented process of claim 1, further comprising:

detecting whether the display device is connected to a computer network for accessing the remote resources.

6. The computer-implemented process of claim 5, wherein the computer combines content from the first resource and the local storage and transmits the combined content for display on the display if the display is not connected to a computer network for accessing the remote resources.

7. A computer-implemented process comprising:

receiving data over a wireless connection from a computer indicating a resource identifier for a first resource remote from the display device and display coordinates for content from the first resource;

receiving display content over the wireless connection from the computer;

requesting the content from the first resource;

combining the content from the first resource and the display content from the computer; and

displaying the combined content.

8. The computer-implemented process of claim 7, further comprising:

receiving data over the wireless connection from the computer, a resource identifier for a second resource remote from the display device, authentication parameters, and display coordinates for content from the second resource .

9. The computer-implemented process of claim 8, wherein combining further comprises:

combining the content from the first resource, the second resource and the display content from the computer.

10. The computer-implemented process of claim 7, wherein the display device is connected via a Wi-Fi Direct compliant wireless connection.

11. The computer-implemented process of claim 10, wherein the resource identifier and content from the computer are received in a beacon packet.

12. The computer-implemented process of claim 7, further comprising:

communicating to the computer whether the display device is connected to a computer network for accessing the remote resources.

13. The computer-implemented process of claim 12, wherein the display device receives, from the computer, content from the computer and the remote resources, for display on the display device if the display device is not connected to a computer network for accessing the remote resources.

14. A display device comprising:

a display;

a computing device having a communication device for connection with a computer network and a wireless connection device for establishing a wireless connection with a host computer, the computing device being configured by a computer program stored in memory to;

receive data over the wireless connection from the host computer indicating a resource identifier for a first resource remote from the display device and display coordinates for content from the first resource;

receive display content over the wireless connection from the host computer;

request the content from the first resource;

combine the content from the first resource and the display content from the host computer; and

display the combined content on the display.

15. The display device of claim 14, wherein the computing device is further configured to:

receive data over the wireless connection from the host computer, a resource identifier for a second resource remote from the display device, authentication parameters, and display coordinates for content from the second resource.

16. The display device of claim 15, wherein the computing device is further configured to:

combine the content from the first resource, the second resource and the display content from the host computer.

17. The display device of claim 14, wherein the display is connected via a Wi-Fi Direct compliant wireless connection to the host computer.

18. The display device of claim 17, wherein the resource identifier and content from the host computer are received in a beacon packet.

19. The display device of claim 14, wherein the computing device is further configured to:

communicate to the host computer whether the display device is connected to a computer network for accessing the remote resources.

20. The display device of claim 19, wherein the display device receives, from the host computer, content from the host computer and the remote resources, for display on the display if the display device is not connected to a computer network for accessing the remote resources.
