Abstract

System, method, and computer program product to perform an operation comprising collecting performance metrics of a first virtual machine, and defining, based on the collected performance metrics, at least one rule to restrict collocation of the first virtual machine with other virtual machines on one or more host machines in a cloud computing environment.

Claims

1. A method comprising:

collecting performance metrics of a first virtual machine; and

defining, based on the collected performance metrics and by operation of one or more computer processors, at least one rule to restrict co-location of the first virtual machine with other virtual machines on one or more host machines in a cloud computing environment.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

detecting a resource conflict between the first virtual machine and a second virtual machine, wherein the first and second virtual machines are executing on a first host machine in the cloud computing environment, wherein the at least one rule is further based on the resource conflict and is for the first virtual machine and the second virtual machine.

3. The method of claim 2, further comprising:

enforcing the at least one rule in the cloud computing environment, wherein enforcing the at least one rule comprises at least one of;

(i) moving one of the first and second virtual machines from the first host machine to resolve the conflict, and (ii) preventing subsequent instances of the first and second virtual machines from being colocated on the same host in the cloud computing environment.

4. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

collecting performance metrics of a host machine executing the first virtual machine, wherein the at least one performance rule is further based on the collected performance metrics of the host machine.

5. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

subsequent to defining the at least one rule, collecting additional performance metrics of the first virtual machine; and

programmatically modifying the at least one rule based on the additional performance metrics.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the at least one rule is associated with a parent image of the first virtual machine and all subsequent instances of the parent image of the first virtual machine deployed in the cloud computing environment.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the performance metrics comprise at least one of:

(i) a processor utilization, (ii) a memory utilization, (iii) network I/O rates, and (iv) disk I/O rates.
