Abstract

A method and apparatus for correctly binding form objects to encrypted XML data is described. In one embodiment, the method includes examining at least one data description stored in a set of replacement properties for a set of encrypted XML data, wherein each data description is associated with an encrypted data element from the set of encrypted XML data and binding form objects to encrypted data elements of the set of encrypted XML data using the at least one data description.

Claims

1. A computer implemented method for correctly binding form objects to encrypted XML data, comprising:

examining at least one data description stored in a set of replacement properties for a set of encrypted XML data, wherein each data description is associated with an encrypted data element from the set of encrypted XML data; and

binding form objects to encrypted data elements of the set of encrypted XML data using the at least one data description, wherein the binding comprises binding a particular form object to a corresponding encrypted data element of the set of encrypted XML data when the particular form object would have bound to a descendent of an unencrypted version of the corresponding encrypted data element of the set of encrypted data.

2. The computer implemented method of claim 1, wherein binding the form objects further comprises binding a particular form object to at least one encrypted data element having a corresponding data description.

3. The computer implemented method of claim 1, wherein the set of replacement properties are placed within the set of encrypted XML data.

5. The computer implemented method of claim 1, wherein the examining step further comprises:

obfuscating the at least one data description.

6. The computer implemented method of claim 1, wherein the binding step further comprises:

unobfuscating the at least one data description.

7. The computer implemented method of claim 1, further comprising:

determining which of the form objects are bound to an encrypted data element and taking action when a form object is bound to the encrypted data element.

8. The computer implemented method of claim 7, wherein the action comprises at least one of setting the form objects to be read-only or displaying an indicator that the form object is bound to the encrypted data element.

9. The computer implemented method of claim 1, further comprising:

generating the set of encrypted XML data by encrypting a set of unencrypted XML data, extracting the at least one data description of the unencrypted data at least one of during or before the encryption process, and storing the data descriptions in the set of replacement properties.

10. The computer implemented method of claim 1, further comprising:

after encrypting the set of unencrypted XML data, rebinding the form objects with the encrypted data elements.

11. A non-transitory computer readable storage medium for storing software that, when executed by a computing system, causes a computing system to perform a method that comprises:

extracting at least one data description from a set of replacement properties for at least one encrypted data element from a set of encrypted XML data; and

binding at least one form object to the at least one encrypted data element of the set of encrypted XML data using the at least one extracted data description, wherein the binding comprises binding a particular form object to a corresponding encrypted data element of the set of encrypted XML data when the particular form object would have bound to a descendent of an unencrypted version of the corresponding encrypted data element of the set of encrypted data.

12. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 11, wherein the binding step further comprises:

binding a particular form object to at least one encrypted data element having a corresponding data description.

14. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 11, wherein the extracting step further comprises:

unobfuscating the at least one data description.

15. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 11, further comprising:

determining which of the at least one form object is bound to an encrypted XML data element and taking action when a form object is bound to the encrypted XML data element.

16. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 15, wherein the action is at least one of setting at least one form object to read-only or displaying an indicator that the at least one form object is bound to the encrypted XML data element.

17. An apparatus for correctly binding form objects to encrypted XML data comprising:

an encrypting application, implemented on a computer, for extracting at least one data description from a set of replacement properties for a set of encrypted XML data, wherein each data description is associated with an encrypted data element from the set of encrypted XML data; and

a binding application, implemented on a computer, for binding form objects to encrypted data elements of the set of encrypted XML data using the at least one data description, wherein the binding comprises binding a particular form object to a corresponding encrypted data element of the set of encrypted XML data when the particular form object would have bound to a descendent of an unencrypted version of the corresponding encrypted data element of the set of encrypted data.

18. The apparatus of claim 17, wherein the binding application binds a particular form object to at least one encrypted data element having a corresponding data description.

20. The apparatus of claim 17, wherein the binding application rebinds the form objects with the encrypted data elements after encrypting the set of unencrypted XML data.
