Abstract

A method includes establishing an initial resistive force on a contrast fluid in a contrast delivery modulation component and injecting the contrast fluid into the patient with an injection syringe fluidly connected to the injection catheter and the contrast fluid inlet port of the contrast delivery modulation component. A contrast delivery measurement component is used to assess a total volume of the contrast fluid injected into the patient and a resistive force imparted upon the contrast fluid in the chamber.

Claims

1. A method comprising:

establishing an initial resistive force on a contrast fluid in a contrast delivery modulation component comprising a contrast fluid inlet port, a contrast fluid outlet port, and a variable resistive force chamber capable of imparting a variable resistive force upon the contrast fluid to an injection catheter in a patient through the contrast fluid outlet port;

injecting the contrast fluid into the patient with an injection syringe fluidly connected to the injection catheter and the contrast fluid inlet port of the contrast delivery modulation component;

using a contrast delivery measurement component at least partially integrated with the injection syringe to assess at least one of a total volume of the contrast fluid injected into the patient and a maximum intended volume of contrast fluid; and

altering a resistive force imparted upon the contrast fluid in the chamber of the contrast delivery modulation component.

The method of claim 1, wherein using the contrast delivery measurement component comprises viewing a display unit of the contrast delivery measurement component that displays the at least one of the total volume of the contrast fluid injected into the patient and the maximum intended volume of contrast fluid.

The method of claim 2, wherein the contrast delivery measurement component comprises a light sensor module disposed on the injection syringe, wherein the light sensor module comprises a light sensor housing and a first sensor element and a second sensor element, wherein the first sensor element and the second sensor element are disposed within the light sensor housing, and wherein the injection syringe comprises a substantially translucent portion.

The method of claim 3, wherein the display of the at least one of the total volume of the contrast fluid injected into the patient is based at least in part on a position of the first sensor element relative to the substantially translucent portion and a position of the second sensor element relative to the substantially translucent portion.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the assessment is based at least in part on a receipt of a warning emitted by the contrast delivery measurement component.

6. A system for the modulation of the fluid characteristics of a fluid medium to a delivery site within a body, the system comprising:

a delivery catheter having a lumen and capable of delivering a medium from outside the body to the delivery site within the body;

a syringe capable of being actuated to provide fluid medium to the delivery catheter, wherein the syringe comprises a light sensor module; and

a modulator disposed between the syringe and the delivery catheter, wherein the modulator is configured to limit a pressure of fluid medium provided to the delivery catheter to a pre-determined maximum pressure value during actuation of the syringe.

7. The system of claim 6, wherein the syringe comprises:

a housing;

a plunger slidably disposed within the housing;

a light sensor module secured to the housing for detecting a position of the plunger relative to the housing; and

a light emitter module secured to the housing, wherein the plunger comprises a plurality of substantially translucent portions.

8. The apparatus of claim 7, wherein the plurality of substantially translucent portions comprise:

a first portion having a first translucency; and

a second portion having a second translucency less than the first translucency.

9. The apparatus of claim 7, wherein the plurality of substantially translucent portions comprise a gradation.

10. A system for the modulation of pressure of a fluid medium, the system comprising:

an injector for injecting the medium, wherein the injector comprises a light sensor module;

a delivery catheter for delivering the medium from outside a body to a delivery site within the body; and

a modulator disposed between the injector and the delivery catheter, the modulator comprising;

a medium chamber in fluid communication with the injector and the delivery catheter, wherein the medium chamber is configured to receive at least a first portion of the medium when a system pressure is greater than a predetermined value and to discharge a second portion of the medium when the system pressure is less than the predetermined value, and wherein the chamber includes a surface therein that imparts a constant pressure force on the medium within the medium chamber.

11. The system of claim 10, wherein the system further comprises a weight disposed relative to the surface therein to urge the surface against the fluid medium in the chamber.

12. The system of claim 10, wherein the system further comprises a constant force spring disposed relative to the surface therein to urge the surface against the fluid medium in the chamber.

13. The system of claim 10, wherein the medium reservoir is configured to receive medium from the syringe and discharge medium into the system based at least in part on a system pressure.

14. The system of claim 10, wherein the injector comprises:

a housing; and

a plunger slidably disposed within the housing.

15. The system of claim 14, wherein the light sensor module is secured to the housing for detecting a position of the plunger relative to the housing;

and

wherein the system further comprises a light emitter module secured to the housing, wherein the plunger comprises a plurality of substantially translucent portions.

16. The apparatus of claim 15, wherein the plurality of substantially translucent portions comprise:

a first portion having a first translucency; and

a second portion having a second translucency less than the first translucency.

17. The apparatus of claim 15, wherein the plurality of substantially translucent portions comprise a gradation.

18. The system of claim 10, wherein the light sensor module comprises a light sensor module disposed on the injector, wherein the light sensor module comprises a light sensor housing and a first sensor element and a second sensor element, wherein the first sensor element and the second sensor element are disposed within the light sensor housing, wherein positioning the plunger at the first position aligns a substantially translucent portion of the plunger with the first sensor element and positioning the plunger at the second position aligns the substantially translucent portion with the second sensor element.

19. The system of claim 18, further comprising a lead extending from the light sensor.

20. The system of claim 19, further comprising an interface for connecting the lead to a measuring device, and wherein the measuring device displays a total volume injected and emits a warning of a critical outcome.
