Abstract

Methods and systems for providing data communication in medical systems are disclosed.

Claims

1. An analyte monitoring system, comprising:

a remote device;

an analyte sensor configured to transcutaneously position a portion in fluid contact with bodily fluid under a skin surface to monitor an analyte level in the bodily fluid; and

sensor electronics operatively coupled to the analyte sensor and configured for data communication with the remote device when the remote device is positioned within a predetermined distance from sensor electronics, the sensor electronics further configured to transition a status identifier from a first state to a second state when the sensor electronics determines that the analyte sensor is initialized, and to communicate the status identifier to the remote device.

2. The system of claim 1, wherein the status identifier is used to verify the transcutaneous positioning of the analyte sensor in fluid contact with the bodily fluid under the skin surface.

3. The system of claim 1, wherein the status identifier is associated with a sensor connection status or a sensor removal status.

4. The system of claim 1, wherein the transition of the status identifier from the first state to the second state activates a power up or a power down routine.

5. The system of claim 1, wherein the transition of the status identifier from the first state to the second state triggers a power up routine in the sensor electronics.

6. The system of claim 1, wherein the sensor electronics is configured to transition the status identifier from the second state to the first state corresponding to detection of sensor removal, and triggers a power down routine in the sensor electronics.

7. The system of claim 1, wherein the sensor electronics includes a memory to store the status identifier.

8. The system of claim 7, wherein the sensor electronics is configured to retrieve a sensor parameter data stored in the memory.

9. The system of claim 8, wherein the sensor parameter data includes sensor sensitivity information.

10. The system of claim 1, wherein the analyte sensor includes a plurality of electrodes including a working electrode comprising a glucose-responsive enzyme bonded to a polymer disposed on the working electrode.

11. The system of claim 10, wherein the glucose-responsive enzyme is chemically bonded to the polymer disposed on the working electrode.

12. The system of claim 10, wherein the working electrode further includes a mediator.

13. The system of claim 12, wherein the mediator is crosslinked with the polymer.

14. The system of claim 1, wherein the analyte sensor includes a plurality of electrodes including a working electrode comprising a mediator bonded to a polymer disposed on the working electrode.

15. The system of claim 1, wherein the analyte sensor requires no user calibration when in fluid contact with the bodily fluid under the skin surface.

16. The system of claim 15, wherein the analyte sensor requires no user calibration during the time the analyte sensor monitors the analyte level in the bodily fluid.

17. The system of claim 1, wherein the analyte sensor is factory calibrated.

18. The system of claim 1, wherein the sensor electronics is configured to wirelessly communicate with the remote device.

19. The system of claim 1, wherein the sensor electronics is configured to determine that the analyte sensor is initialized based on one or more signals generated by the transcutaneously positioned analyte sensor.

20. The system of claim 1, wherein the remote device is configured to transmit a command to the sensor electronics to turn on or turn off a communication component of the sensor electronics.
