Abstract

In one embodiment, a method comprising by one or more computing devices, transmitting, from a first mobile device, a first message that includes a first user identifier corresponding to a first user of the first mobile device, wherein the first user identifier corresponds to a user account of the first user in a social-networking system, receiving, at the first mobile device, one or more second messages that includes a second user identifier corresponding to a second mobile device within a direct radio connectivity of the first mobile device, wherein the second user identifier corresponds to a respective user account of a second user in the social-networking system, and storing, at the first mobile device, information received in the second message for access by one or more applications hosted on the first mobile device.

Claims

1. A method comprising:

by one or more computing devices,

transmitting, from a first mobile device, a first message that includes a first user identifier corresponding to a first user of the first mobile device, wherein the first user identifier corresponds to a user account of the first user in a social-networking system;

receiving, at the first mobile device, one or more second messages that includes a second user identifier corresponding to a second mobile device within a direct radio connectivity of the first mobile device, wherein the second user identifier corresponds to a respective user account of a second user in the social-networking system; and

storing, at the first mobile device, information received in the second message for access by one or more applications hosted on the first mobile device.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

responsive to receiving the second user identifiers, at the first mobile device, accessing the stored information to friend the one or more second users within the social-networking system; and

transmitting, from the first mobile device, a third message to the one or more second mobile devices indicating that the second user was friended by the first user in the social-networking system, the third message including the first user identifier of the first mobile device.

The method of claim 1, wherein the first mobile device is in a promiscuous mode, the promiscuous mode causing the first mobile device to friend all of the second mobile devices within the direct radio connectivity wherein the first user and the second user have no association in the social-networking system.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the first user and the second user have an association in the social-networking system.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein first mobile device receives one or more second messages only if the second user account in the social-networking system is discoverable.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the direct radio connectivity may be restricted by date and time.

7. The method of claim 2, further comprising:

responsive to friending the one or more second users in the social-networking system, at the first mobile device, generating a group in the social-networking system comprising the first user and the one or more second users; and

transmitting, by the first mobile device, a fourth message to the one or more second mobile devices indicating that the group was generated in the social-networking system, the fourth message including the first user identifier of the first mobile device.

8. A system comprising:

a memory comprising instructions executable by one or more processors; and

the one or more processors coupled to the memory and operable to execute the instructions, the one or more processors being operable when executing the instructions to;

transmit a first message that includes a first user identifier corresponding to a first user of a first mobile device, wherein the first user identifier corresponds to a user account of the first user in a social-networking system;

receive one or more second messages that includes a second user identifier corresponding to a second mobile device within a direct radio connectivity of the first mobile device, wherein the second user identifier corresponds to a respective user account of a second user in the social-networking system; and

store information received in the second message for access by one or more applications hosted on the first mobile device.

9. The system of claim 8, further operable to:

responsive to receiving the second user identifiers, access the stored information to friend the one or more second users within the social-networking system; and

transmit a third message to the one or more second mobile devices indicating that the second user was friended by the first user in the social-networking system, the third message including the first user identifier of the first mobile device.

10. The system of claim 8, wherein the first mobile device is in a promiscuous mode, the promiscuous mode causing the first mobile device to friend all of the second mobile devices within the direct radio connectivity wherein the first user and the second user have no association in the social-networking system.

11. The system of claim 8, wherein the first user and the second user have an association in the social-networking system.

12. The system of claim 8, wherein first mobile device receives one or more second messages only if the second user account in the social-networking system is discoverable.

13. The system of claim 8, wherein the direct radio connectivity may be restricted by date and time.

14. The system of claim 9, further operable to:

responsive to friending the one or more second users in the social-networking system, generate a group in the social-networking system comprising the first user and the one or more second users; and

transmit a fourth message to the one or more second mobile devices indicating that the group was generated in the social-networking system, the fourth message including the first user identifier of the first mobile device.

15. One or more computer-readable non-transitory storage media embodying software operable when executed by one or more computer systems to:

transmit a first message that includes a first user identifier corresponding to a first user of a first mobile device, wherein the first user identifier corresponds to a user account of the first user in a social-networking system;

receive one or more second messages that includes a second user identifier corresponding to a second mobile device within a direct radio connectivity of the first mobile device, wherein the second user identifier corresponds to a respective user account of a second user in the social-networking system; and

store information received in the second message for access by one or more applications hosted on the first mobile device.

16. The media of claim 15, further operable to:

responsive to receiving the second user identifiers, access the stored information to friend the one or more second users within the social-networking system; and

transmit a third message to the one or more second mobile devices indicating that the second user was friended by the first user in the social-networking system, the third message including the first user identifier of the first mobile device.

17. The media of claim 15, wherein the first mobile device is in a promiscuous mode, the promiscuous mode causing the first mobile device to friend all of the second mobile devices within the direct radio connectivity wherein the first user and the second user have no association in the social-networking system.

18. The media of claim 15, wherein the first user and the second user have an association in the social-networking system.

19. The media of claim 15, wherein first mobile device receives one or more second messages only if the second user account in the social-networking system is discoverable.

20. The media of claim 16, further operable to:

responsive to friending the one or more second users in the social-networking system, generate a group in the social-networking system comprising the first user and the one or more second users; and

transmit a fourth message to the one or more second mobile devices indicating that the group was generated in the social-networking system, the fourth message including the first user identifier of the first mobile device.
