Abstract

The invention relates to a rechargeable battery and a method to operate a rechargeable battery having high efficiency and high energy density for storing energy. The battery stores electrical energy in the bonds of carbon and oxygen atoms by converting carbon dioxide into solid carbon and oxygen.

Claims

1. A rechargeable battery for storing electrical energy, said rechargeable battery comprising:

a stack of electrochemical cells;

a means for converting at least one of the products produced by feeding electricity and a reactant to said stack of electrochemical cells; and

a means for storing at least one of the converted products produced by the conversion of at least one of the products produced by said stack of electrochemical cells, wherein said at least one of the converted products is carbon in its solid form;

wherein said rechargeable battery is adapted to be operated by a method comprising;

charging said rechargeable battery by feeding electricity and a reactant to said rechargeable battery; and

discharging said rechargeable battery by transforming at least one of the converted products previously stored or externally supplied.

14. The rechargeable battery according to claim 1, wherein said means for converting at least one of the products produced by said stack of electrochemical cells is integrated in said rechargeable battery.

15. The rechargeable battery device according to claim 1, wherein said means for storing said at least one of the converted products produced by said stack of electrochemical cells is integrated in said rechargeable battery.

16. The rechargeable battery according to claim 1, wherein said means for converting said at least one of the products produced by said stack of electrochemical cells comprises said means for storing said at least one of the converted products produced by said stack of electrochemical cells.

17. The rechargeable battery according to claim 1, wherein said means for storing said at least one of the converted products produced by said stack of electrochemical cells is a carbon holder.

18. The rechargeable battery according to claim 1, wherein said means for storing said at least one of the converted products produced by said stack of electrochemical cells is in the form of an interlayer in between at least two electrochemical cells of said stack of electrochemical cells.

19. The rechargeable battery according to claim 1, wherein said means for storing said at least one of the converted products produced by said stack of electrochemical cells is comprised in one of the electrodes or interconnects.

The rechargeable battery according to claim 1, wherein said means for converting at least one of said products is in thermal contact with said stack of electrochemical cells, such that efficient heat transfer can occur between the electrodes of the electrochemical cells and the means for converting at least one of said products.

21. The rechargeable battery according to claim 1, wherein each electrochemical cell in said stack of electrochemical cells comprises a solid state electrolyte layer.

22. The rechargeable battery according to claim 1 adapted to be charged by feeding electricity and a reactant to said rechargeable battery and to be discharged by transforming at least one of the converted products previously stored or externally supplied.

23. A method of operating a rechargeable battery for storing electrical energy, said rechargeable battery comprising:

a stack of electrochemical cells;

a means for converting at least one of the products produced by said stack of electrochemical cells; and

a means for storing at least one of the converted products produced by the conversion of at least one of the products produced by said stack of electrochemical cells, wherein said at least one of the converted products is carbon in its solid form;

said method comprising;

charging said rechargeable battery by feeding electricity and a reactant to said rechargeable battery; and

discharging said rechargeable battery by transforming at least one of the converted products previously stored or externally supplied.

24. The method of operating said rechargeable battery according to claim 23, wherein said charging comprises:

operating, in a first mode, said stack of electrochemical cells by feeding a reactant and electricity to said stack of electrochemical cells; and

converting and storing said at least one of said products into solid carbon.

25. The method of operating said rechargeable battery according to claim 23, wherein said discharging comprises:

feeding gas to said means for converting and storing at least one of the products produced by said stack of electrochemical cells;

transforming said at least one of the converted products into gas and providing said gas to said stack of electrochemical cells; and

operating said stack of electrochemical cells in a second mode, thereby producing electricity.
