Abstract

In at least one embodiment, a method of providing an automated coaching message to a user of a portable electronic device includes determining first information corresponding to a health-related action for the user of the portable electronic device, transmitting the first information from the portable electronic device to a remotely located computing device, determining whether a coaching message should be provided, and receiving an automated coaching message based on the first information.

Claims

1. A method of providing an automated coaching message to a user of a portable electronic device, the method comprising:

determining first information corresponding to a health-related action for the user of the portable electronic device, the portable electronic device comprising a microprocessor, a display screen, a user input, a satellite positioning system receiver, an accelerometer, and a wireless communication transceiver;

transmitting, via the wireless communication transceiver, the first information from the portable electronic device to a remotely located computing device;

determining whether a coaching message should be provided; and

receiving, via the wireless communication transceiver, an automated coaching message based on the first information.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the health-related action comprises a fitness activity.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the health-related action comprises a dining decision.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the automated coaching message comprises an action to be taken by the user.

5. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

determining a health-related goal for the user.

6. The method of claim 5, wherein determining whether a coaching message should be provided comprises comparing the health-related goal to the first information.

7. The method of claim 5, wherein the coaching message comprises a message indicating that the user is not meeting the health-related goal.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein the microprocessor of the portable electronic device determines whether the coaching message should be provided.

9. The method of claim 1, further comprising displaying the automated coaching message on the display screen of the portable electronic device.

10. A method of providing a health-related message to a user of a portable electronic device, the method comprising:

receiving first information corresponding to a daily caloric goal of the user at the portable electronic device, the portable electronic device comprising a microprocessor, a display screen, a user input, a satellite positioning system receiver, an accelerometer, and a wireless communication transceiver;

receiving second information corresponding to a dining decision of the user at the portable electronic device, wherein the second information is entered via the user input of the portable electronic device;

the portable electronic device remotely accessing a nutritional database;

the portable electronic device determining caloric information corresponding to the dining decision via the nutritional database; and

receiving, via the wireless communication transceiver, a health-related message based on the daily caloric goal and the caloric information.

11. The method of claim 10, wherein the nutritional database comprises caloric and nutritional information for at least one food item.

12. The method of claim 10, wherein the health-related message comprises a recommended action to be taken by the user.

13. The method of claim 12, wherein the recommended action is based on a comparison of the daily caloric goal and the caloric information corresponding to the dining decision.

14. The method of claim 10, further comprising:

receiving third information from the portable electronic device associated with the user, wherein the third information corresponds to caloric expenditure of the user, and wherein the health-related message is further based on the third information.

15. The method of claim 10, further comprising displaying the health-related message on the display screen of the portable electronic device.

16. The method of claim 10, wherein the first information further comprises a daily non-caloric nutritional goal, and wherein the daily non-caloric nutritional goal includes an individual goal for fats, an individual goal for carbohydrates, or an individual goal for sugars.

17. A portable health coaching system for coaching a user through a health plan using a portable electronic device, comprising:

a display screen;

a user input;

a satellite positioning system receiver;

an accelerometer;

a wireless communication transceiver;

a memory; and

one or more processors configured to;

receive first information corresponding to a daily caloric goal of the user;

receive second information corresponding to a dining decision of the user via the user input;

remotely access a nutritional database via the wireless communication transceiver;

determine caloric information corresponding to the second information via the nutritional database; and

receive a health-related message via the wireless communication transceiver based on the daily caloric goal and the caloric information corresponding to the second information.

18. The system of claim 17, wherein the processor is further configured to display the health related message via the display screen.

19. The system of claim 17, wherein the message comprises an action to be taken by the user.

20. The system of claim 17, wherein the message comprises a recommendation.
