Abstract

The present technology concerns cell phones and other portable devices, and more particularly concerns use of such devices in connection with media content (electronic and physical) and with other systems (e.g., televisions, digital video recorders, and electronic program directories). One particular aspect of the technology concerns complementing primary content viewed on one screen (e.g., a television screen) with auxiliary content displayed on a second screen (e.g., a cell phone screen). Different auxiliary content can be paired with the primary content, depending on the profile of the user (e.g., age, location, etc.). Some embodiments make use of location information provided by the primary screen device. Other embodiments make use of content identification data provided by the primary screen device. A great number of other features and arrangements are also detailed.

Claims

1. A method comprising the acts:

determining position information about at least one of first and second devices that are in proximity to each other, using hardware configured to perform such act, the first device presenting first content to a person, one of said devices comprising a portable phone device, the other of said devices comprising a video display system; and

determining second content to present to said person on a screen of the second device, based on (a) the first content presented by the first device, and (b) the determined position.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the first device is the video display system and the second device is the portable phone device.

3. The method of claim 1 in which determining said position information comprises accessing position information provided from the video display system.

4. The method of claim 3 in which the accessed position information includes information indicating a compass direction that the video display system is facing.

5. The method of claim 3 that includes accessing said position information from a data store that is distinct from both the first and second devices.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein the second content is different than the first content, but complements the first content.

7. The method of claim 1 that includes determining the first and second devices are in proximity to each other by a wireless signal emitted by one of said devices and sensed by the other of said devices.

8. The method of claim 7 that includes determining the first and second devices are in proximity to each other by a radio frequency wireless signal emitted by one of said devices and sensed by the other of said devices.

9. The method of claim 7 that includes determining the first and second devices are in proximity to each other by reference to GPS location data generated by one of said devices.

10. The method of claim 1 that includes:

the second device sampling data from the first content presented by the first device; and

identifying the first content by reference to the sampled data.

11. The method of claim 1 that includes identifying said first content presented by the first device by reference to content identification information stored in a data store, said data store being distinct from both the first and second devices.

12. The method of claim 1 that includes identifying said first content presented by the first device by content identification data sent from the first device, the content identification data being different than said first content itself.

14. The method of claim 12 that includes determining said second content based on both the identified first content and also on information about location of one of said devices.

15. The method of claim 12 that includes identifying the first content by reference to content identification information provided from said video display system, said content identification information being different than the first content itself.

13. A method involving first and second devices, one of said devices comprising a portable user device, the other of said devices comprising a video display system, the method comprising the acts:

by reference to location information provided from the video display system, determining that the portable user device is in proximity with said video display system;

identifying first content being rendered by said video display system; and

determining second content to present on a screen of said portable user device, based at least on said identified first content, said determining being performed by a processor configured to perform such act, wherein the second content is different than the first content, but complements the first content.

16. A method comprising the acts:

determining that first and second devices are in proximity to each other, using hardware configured to perform such act, the first device presenting first content to a person, one of said devices comprising a portable phone device, the other of said devices comprising a video display system; and

determining second content to present to said person on a screen of the second device, based on (a) the first content presented by the first device, and (b) a position of one of said devices.

17. The method of claim 16 in which said act of determining that the first and second devices are in proximity uses GPS data produced by one of said devices.

18. The method of claim 16 in which said act of determining that the first and second devices are in proximity employs a wireless signal emitted by one of said devices and sensed by the other of said devices.

19. The method of claim 16 that includes identifying said first content presented by the first device, by data sent from the first device, identifying aid content.

20. The method of claim 16 that includes:

the second device sampling data from the first content presented by the first device; and

identifying the first content by reference to the sampled data.
