Abstract

An approach is described for sorting and displaying documents according to sentiment level in an online community. An associated system may include a processor and a memory storing an application program, which, when executed on the processor, performs an operation that may include selecting a review topic in an online community and identifying a plurality of documents contributed for the review topic. The plurality of documents may include at least one of a product review submission, a marketing survey submission, a social network activity stream post, a discussion forum post, a weblog post, and an audiovisual sample. The operation further may include obtaining sentiment data associated with each of the plurality of documents developing a sentiment model based on the obtained sentiment data. Additionally, the operation may include organizing and presenting the plurality of documents in an online community interface based on the sentiment model.

11. A computer program product comprising a computer readable storage medium having program instructions embodied therewith, the program instructions executable by a computing device to cause the computing device to:

select a review topic in an online community;

identify a plurality of documents contributed for the review topic;

obtain sentiment data associated with each of the plurality of documents;

develop a sentiment model based on the obtained sentiment data; and

organize and present the plurality of documents in an online community interface based on the sentiment model.

12. The computer program product of claim 11, wherein obtaining sentiment data associated with each of the plurality of documents comprises:

selecting content associated with each of the plurality of documents;

sending, to a sentiment processing application, the selected content associated with each of the plurality of documents; and

receiving, from the sentiment processing application, sentiment data corresponding to language elements in each of the plurality of documents, wherein the language elements are determined from the selected content.

13. The computer program product of claim 12, wherein developing a sentiment model based on the obtained sentiment data comprises:

for each document among the plurality of documents;

calculating a sentiment score for each language element in the document; and

calculating a sentiment score for the document based upon the respective sentiment scores calculated for the language elements of the document.

The computer program product of claim 13, wherein calculating the sentiment score for each language element in the document comprises establishing predefined rules based upon one or more factors, and wherein the one or more factors include at least one of (i) polarity of sentiment, (ii) level of sentiment, (iii) level of bias, (iv) use of figures of speech, and (v) use of indicia of emphasis.

15. The computer program product of claim 13, wherein organizing and presenting the plurality of documents based on the sentiment model comprises:

sorting the plurality of documents by assigning priority values according to calculated sentiment score, such that documents that have respectively lower sentiment scores are assigned respectively higher priority values;

upon determining that there is at least one group of documents assigned a same priority value consequent to the sort, differentiating priority values by applying at least one tiebreak technique for each group of documents; and

displaying the sorted plurality of documents in the online community interface, wherein documents assigned respectively higher priority values are displayed more prominently than documents assigned respectively lower priority values.

16. A system comprising:

a processor; and

a memory storing an application program, which, when executed on the processor, performs an operation comprising;

selecting a review topic in an online community;

identifying a plurality of documents contributed for the review topic;

obtaining sentiment data associated with each of the plurality of documents;

developing a sentiment model based on the obtained sentiment data; and

organizing and presenting the plurality of documents in an online community interface based on the sentiment model.

17. The system of claim 16, wherein obtaining sentiment data associated with each of the plurality of documents comprises:

selecting content associated with each of the plurality of documents;

sending, to a sentiment processing application, the selected content associated with each of the plurality of documents; and

receiving, from the sentiment processing application, sentiment data corresponding to language elements in each of the plurality of documents, wherein the language elements are determined from the selected content.

18. The system of claim 17, wherein developing a sentiment model based on the obtained sentiment data comprises:

for each document among the plurality of documents;

calculating a sentiment score for each language element in the document; and

calculating a sentiment score for the document based upon the respective sentiment scores calculated for the language elements of the document.

The system of claim 18, wherein calculating the sentiment score for each language element in the document comprises establishing predefined rules based upon one or more factors, and wherein the one or more factors include at least one of (i) polarity of sentiment, (ii) level of sentiment, (iii) level of bias, (iv) use of figures of speech, and (v) use of indicia of emphasis.

20. The system of claim 18, wherein organizing and presenting the plurality of documents based on the sentiment model comprises:

sorting the plurality of documents by assigning priority values according to calculated sentiment score, such that documents that have respectively lower sentiment scores are assigned respectively higher priority values;

upon determining that there is at least one group of documents assigned a same priority value consequent to the sort, differentiating priority values by applying at least one tiebreak technique for each group of documents; and

displaying the sorted plurality of documents in the online community interface, wherein documents assigned respectively higher priority values are displayed more prominently than documents assigned respectively lower priority values.
