SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR RECEIVING ACTUAL TELEMATICS DATA FOR A VEHICLE BASED ON DETERMINATION OF AN INITIAL BENEFIT FROM PRELIMINARY TELEMATICS DATA COLLECTED BY A SMARTPHONE

1. A computer system for receiving preliminary telematics data for a driver, determining an initial insurance policy benefit for the driver based on the preliminary telematics data, issuing an insurance policy to the driver responsive to receipt of data indicative of an agreement to participate in a telematics program by the driver, receiving data corresponding to actual telematics data, and, when the actual telematics data meets a pre-determined condition, determining a final insurance policy benefit for the driver, the system comprising:
- a data storage device for storing data indicative of the preliminary telematics data collected by a smartphone associated with a vehicle; and
a computer processor in communication with the data storage device; and
a memory, coupled to the computer processor, storing program instructions for execution by the computer processor to;
receive, before the insurance policy for the vehicle has been issued to the driver, the preliminary telematics data collected by the smartphone associated with the vehicle;
determine, based on the preliminary telematics data received from the smartphone, the initial insurance policy benefit to be applied upon issuance of the insurance policy;
responsive to receipt of data indicative of the agreement to participate in the telematics program from the driver, issue the insurance policy to the driver in accordance with the initial insurance policy benefit;
receive, after the insurance policy for the vehicle has been issued to the driver, data corresponding to the actual telematics data collected after the issuance of the insurance policy by a data collection device within the vehicle, the actual telematics data comprising at least one of geo-position information of the vehicle and vehicle kinematics data for the vehicle;
determine whether the data corresponding to the actual telematics data meets the pre-determined condition,responsive to a determination that the data corresponding to the actual telematics data meets the pre-determined condition;
determine, based on the data corresponding to the actual telematics data, the final insurance policy benefit; and
output an indication of the final insurance policy benefit for the insurance policy.

Abstract
A system and method are disclosed herein to receive preliminary telematics data collected by a smartphone and actual telematics data collected by a data collection device. The system includes a computer memory and a processor in communication with the computer memory. The computer memory stores the data indicative of preliminary telematics data collected by the smartphone, including at least one of geo-position information of the vehicle and vehicle kinematics data. The processor is configured to calculate an initial benefit based upon the preliminary telematics data, and apply the initial benefit in exchange for receiving the data indicative of actual telematics data via the data collection device within the vehicle. When the received data indicative of the actual telematics data meets a pre-determined condition, the processor may compute a final benefit based on the actual telematics data.

receiving, by a communication device before the insurance policy for the vehicle has been issued to the driver, data indicative of preliminary telematics data collected by a smartphone associated with a vehicle, the preliminary telematics data comprising at least one of geo-position information of the vehicle and vehicle kinematics data; automatically determining, by a computer processor based on the preliminary telematics data collected by the smartphone, the initial insurance policy benefit to be applied upon issuance of the insurance policy; responsive to receiving data indicative of the agreement to participate in the telematics program from the driver, issuing by the computer processor the insurance policy to the driver in accordance with the initial insurance policy benefit; receiving, by the communication device after the insurance policy for the vehicle has been issued to the driver seeking the insurance policy, data corresponding to the actual telematics data collected after the issuance of the insurance policy for the vehicle collected by a data collection device within the vehicle, wherein the actual telematics data includes at least one of geo-position information and kinematics data; determining, by the computer processor, whether the data corresponding to the actual telematics data meets the pre-determined condition; and responsive to a determination that the data corresponding to the actual telematics data meets the pre-determined condition; automatically computing, by the computer processor, the final insurance policy benefit based on the actual telematics data; replacing the initial insurance policy benefit with the final insurance policy benefit; and outputting an indication of the final insurance policy benefit for the insurance policy. - View Dependent Claims (10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15)
