Abstract

Embodiments of the disclosure include a method, a system, and a computer program product for modifying a stream operator based on the virtual resources. The method includes receiving a first resource allocation and a second resource allocation of a virtual resource for a virtual machine supporting a stream computing application. The method also includes determining whether the second resource allocation changed within a tolerance relative to the first resource allocation. The method also includes identifying a stream operator in the stream computing application using the virtual resource of the virtual machine. The method also includes modifying the stream operator to accommodate the second resource allocation in response to the second resource allocation changing relative to the first resource allocation.

Claims

1. A system comprising:

one or more servers providing a virtual resource to a virtual machine;

the virtual machine hosting a plurality of stream operators from a stream computing application;

a virtualization manager that manages an allocation of the virtual resource from the one or more servers to the virtual machine, configured to;

receive a first resource allocation and a second resource allocation of the virtual resource supporting a stream computing application,

determine whether the second resource allocation changed within a tolerance relative to the first resource allocation; and

a stream manager that manages functions from the plurality of stream operators, configured to;

identify the plurality of stream operators in the stream computing application supported by the virtual resource,

prioritize the plurality of stream operators to modify based on a utilization metric of the virtual resource, and

modify a prioritized stream operator from the plurality of stream operators to accommodate the second resource allocation in response to the second resource allocation changing relative to the first resource allocation.

2. The system of claim 1, wherein the stream manager is configured to:

determine whether a modification to the prioritized stream operator is adequate;

modify the prioritized stream operator to accommodate the second resource allocation in response to the modification to the prioritized stream operator being inadequate.

3. The system of claim 2, wherein the stream manager is configured to determine whether the modification is adequate by:

measuring a utilization metric for the virtual resource; and

determining whether the utilization metric for the virtual resource is within a virtual resource range.

4. The system of claim 1, wherein the stream manager is configured to modify the prioritized stream operator by:

selecting a function on the prioritized stream operator to modify based on the change, wherein the function affects the virtual resource.

5. The system of claim 1, wherein the stream manager is configured to modify the prioritized stream operator by:

improving a function on the prioritized stream operator to an amount accommodated by the second resource allocation.

6. The system of claim 1, wherein the virtualization manager is configured to determine whether the second resource allocation changed by:

determining whether the second resource allocation provides fewer virtual resources than the first resource allocation.

7. The system of claim 1, wherein the stream manager is configured to modify the prioritized stream operator by:

reducing a function on the prioritized stream operator to an amount accommodated by the second resource allocation.

8. The system of claim 1, wherein the virtual resource includes a memory.

9. The system of claim 1, wherein the virtualization manager is configured to determine whether the second resource allocation changed within a dynamic tolerance relative to the first resource allocation.

10. A computer program product comprising a computer readable storage device having a computer readable program stored therein, wherein the computer readable program, when executed on a computing device, causes the computing device to:

receive a first resource allocation and a second resource allocation of a virtual resource for a virtual machine supporting a stream computing application;

determine whether the second resource allocation changed within a tolerance relative to the first resource allocation;

identify a stream operator in the stream computing application using the virtual resource of the virtual machine; and

modify the stream operator to accommodate the second resource allocation in response to the second resource allocation changing relative to the first resource allocation.

11. The computer program product of claim 10, wherein the virtual resource includes a geographic location of a server.

12. The computer program product of claim 10, wherein the computer readable program causes the computing device to identify the stream operator by:

identifying a plurality of stream operators;

prioritizing the plurality of stream operators to modify based on a utilization metric of the virtual resource; and

selecting the stream operator from the plurality of stream operators based on a priority.

13. The computer program product of claim 10, wherein the computer readable program causes the computing device to:

determine whether a modification to the stream operator is adequate;

modify the stream operator to accommodate the second resource allocation in response to the modification to the stream operator being inadequate.

14. The computer program product of claim 13, wherein the computer readable program causes the computing device to determine whether the modification is adequate by:

measuring a utilization metric of the stream operator for the virtual resource; and

determining whether the utilization metric for the virtual resource is within a virtual resource range.

15. The computer program product of claim 10, wherein the computer readable program causes the computing device to modify the stream operator by:

selecting a function on the stream operator to modify based on the change, wherein the function affects the virtual resource.

16. The computer program product of claim 10, wherein the computer readable program causes the computing device to determine whether the second resource allocation changed by:

determining whether the second resource allocation provides more virtual resources than the first resource allocation.

17. The computer program product of claim 10, wherein the computer readable program causes the computing device to modify the stream operator by:

improving a function on the stream operator to an amount accommodated by the second resource allocation.

18. The computer program product of claim 10, wherein the computer readable program causes the computing device to determine whether the second resource allocation changed by:

determining whether the second resource allocation provides fewer virtual resources than the first resource allocation.

19. The computer program product of claim 10, wherein the computer readable program causes the computing device to modify the stream operator by:

reducing a function on the stream operator to an amount accommodated by the second resource allocation.
