Abstract

Embodiments described herein relate to an invention for restoring a modified token or reissuing an unfettered token for use in a financial transaction. The systems, methods, and computer program products are configured to: (a) provide to a user a notification indicating a fettered token was generated for a payment vehicle or a token associated with the payment vehicle was modified based at least partially on identifying a potential exposure to loss associated with a financial transaction involving the payment vehicle; (b) receive, from the user, authentication information, wherein the authentication information is useable to authenticate the financial transaction and/or to authenticate the user; and (c) determine whether or not to restore the token associated with the payment vehicle that was modified or to generate an unfettered token and associate the unfettered token with the payment vehicle based at least partially on the authentication information.

Claims

1. A system for restoring a previously modified token or reissuing an unfettered token for use in a token-based financial transaction, the system comprising:

a computer apparatus including one or more computing processors and a memory; and

a module stored in the memory, the module comprising computer-executable instructions that when executed by the one or more processors cause the system to;

provide to a user a notification indicating a fettered token was generated for a payment vehicle or a token associated with the payment vehicle was modified based at least partially on identifying a potential exposure to loss associated with a financial transaction involving the payment vehicle;

receive, from the user, authentication information, wherein the authentication information is useable to authenticate the financial transaction and/or to authenticate the user; and

determine whether or not to restore the token associated with the payment vehicle that was modified or to generate an unfettered token and associate the unfettered token with the payment vehicle based at least partially on the authentication information.

2. The system of claim 1, wherein the module further comprises executable instructions that when executed by the processor cause the processor to:

authorize a restoring of the token or a generating of the unfettered token based at least partially on determining that the user authentication information is successful.

3. The system of claim 1, wherein the module further comprises executable instructions that when executed by the processor cause the processor to:

determine whether or not to escalate limitations of the token that was modified or the fettered token based at least partially on the user authentication information.

4. The system of claim 3, wherein the module further comprises executable instructions that when executed by the processor cause the processor to:

escalate limitations of the token that was modified or the fettered token based at least partially on determining that the user authentication information is unsuccessful.

The system of claim 4, wherein escalating limitations of the token includes applying one or more of the following restrictions to the token that was modified or the fettered token including reducing available funds or credit accessible the token, cancelling the token, and restricting usage to a designated merchant or time of day or designated geographic area.

6. The system of claim 1, wherein the module further comprises executable instructions that when executed by the processor cause the processor to:

receive from the user an indication comprising instructions to restore the token that was modified or to reissue the unfettered token, wherein the indication from the user is received together with the authentication information.

7. The system of claim 1, wherein the fettered token comprises instructions limiting one or more features of the payment vehicle or limiting usage of the payment vehicle in future financial transactions.

8. The system of claim 1, wherein the modified token is modified to include instructions limiting one or more features of the payment vehicle or limiting usage of the payment vehicle in future transactions.

9. A computer program product for use in a token-based financial transaction system, whereby the computer program product restores a previously modified token or reissues an unfettered token, the computer program product comprising a non-transitory computer-readable medium, wherein the non-transitory computer-readable medium comprises one or more computer-executable program code portions that, when executed by a computer, cause the computer to:

provide to a user a notification indicating a fettered token was generated for a payment vehicle or a token associated with the payment vehicle was modified based at least partially on identifying a potential exposure to loss associated with a financial transaction involving the payment vehicle;

receive, from the user, authentication information, wherein the authentication information is useable to authenticate the financial transaction and/or to authenticate the user; and

determine whether or not to restore the token associated with the payment vehicle that was modified or to generate an unfettered token and associate the unfettered token with the payment vehicle based at least partially on the authentication information.

10. The computer program product of claim 9, wherein the computer-readable medium further comprises one or more computer-executable program code portions that, when executed by a computer, cause the computer to:

authorize a restoring of the token or a generating of the unfettered token based at least partially on determining that the user authentication information is successful.

11. The computer program product of claim 9, wherein the computer-readable medium further comprises one or more computer-executable program code portions that, when executed by a computer, cause the computer to:

determine whether or not to escalate limitations of the token that was modified or the fettered token based at least partially on the user authentication information.

12. The computer program product of claim 11, wherein the computer-readable medium further comprises one or more computer-executable program code portions that, when executed by a computer, cause the computer to:

escalate limitations of the token that was modified or the fettered token based at least partially on determining that the user authentication information is unsuccessful.

The computer program product of claim 12, wherein escalating limitations of the token includes applying one or more of the following restrictions to the token that was modified or the fettered token including reducing available funds or credit accessible the token, cancelling the token, and restricting usage to a designated merchant or time of day or designated geographic area.

14. The computer program product of claim 9, wherein the computer-readable medium further comprises one or more computer-executable program code portions that, when executed by a computer, cause the computer to:

receive from the user an indication comprising instructions to restore the token that was modified or to reissue the unfettered token, wherein the indication from the user is received together with the authentication information.

15. A method for restoring a previously modified token or reissuing an unfettered token for use in a token-based financial transaction, the method comprising:

providing to a user a notification indicating a fettered token was generated for a payment vehicle or a token associated with the payment vehicle was modified based at least partially on identifying a potential exposure to loss associated with a financial transaction involving the payment vehicle;

receiving, from the user, authentication information, wherein the authentication information is useable to authenticate the financial transaction and/or to authenticate the user; and

determining, by a computer processor, whether or not to restore the token associated with the payment vehicle that was modified or to generate an unfettered token and associate the unfettered token with the payment vehicle based at least partially on the authentication information.

16. The method of claim 15, wherein the method further comprises:

authorizing a restoring of the token or a generating of the unfettered token based at least partially on determining that the user authentication information is successful.

17. The computer-implemented method of claim 15, wherein the method further comprises:

determining whether or not to escalate limitations of the token that was modified or the fettered token based at least partially on the user authentication information.

18. The computer-implemented method of claim 17, wherein the method further comprises:

escalating limitations of the token that was modified or the fettered token based at least partially on determining that the user authentication information is unsuccessful.

19. The method of claim 18, wherein escalating limitations of the token includes applying one or more of the following restrictions to the token that was modified or the fettered token including reducing available funds or credit accessible the token, cancelling the token, and restricting usage to a designated merchant or time of day or designated geographic area.

20. The method of claim 15, wherein the method further comprises:

receiving from the user an indication comprising instructions to restore the token that was modified or to reissue the unfettered token, wherein the indication from the user is received together with the authentication information.
