Abstract

A resource management node includes a processor and a memory coupled to the processor. The memory includes computer readable program code that when executed by the processor causes the processor to perform operations. The operations can include, for each of a plurality of guest virtual machines (VMs), determining operational resources of physical host machines available in a distributed computing system that are needed to provide the guest VM. A placement scenario for placing the guest VMs on the physical host machines and placing the physical host machines in cabinets of a distributed computing system is generated. An amount of infrastructure of the distributed computing system used by the placement scenario is determined. A determination is made whether the placement scenario satisfies a defined rule for how much infrastructure of the distributed computing system can be used. Placement of the physical host machines in the cabinets and placement of the guest VMs on the physical host machines is initiated based on the placement scenario satisfying the defined rule.

Claims

1. A method of operating a resource management node comprising:

for each of a plurality of guest virtual machines (VMs), determining operational resources of physical host machines available in a distributed computing system that are needed to provide the guest VM;

generating a placement scenario for placing the guest VMs on the physical host machines and placing the physical host machines in cabinets of a distributed computing system;

determining an amount of infrastructure of the distributed computing system used by the placement scenario;

determining whether the placement scenario satisfies a defined rule for how much infrastructure of the distributed computing system can be used; and

initiating placement of the physical host machines in the cabinets and placement of the guest VMs on the physical host machines based on the placement scenario satisfying the defined rule.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein initiating placement of the physical host machines in the cabinets and placement of the guest VMs on the physical host machines based on the placement scenario satisfying the defined rule, comprises:

communicating a listing of the physical host machines for installation in identified cabinets based on the placement scenario.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein communicating a listing of the physical host machines for installation in identified cabinets based on the placement scenario, comprises:

generating a work order comprising information identifying physical storage locations in cabinets for installation of at least some of the physical host machines by an operator.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein the work order further comprises information identifying network physical ports of the cabinet to be connected to the at least some of the physical host machines and power physical ports of the cabinet to be connected to the at least some of the physical host machines.

5. The method of claim 3, wherein communicating a listing of the physical host machines for installation in identified cabinets based on the placement scenario, further comprises:

loading the guest VMs on the physical host machines to initiate hosting of the guest VMs on the physical host machines.

6. The method of claim 5, wherein loading the guest VMs on the physical host machines to initiate hosting of the guest VMs on the physical host machines, further comprises:

detecting that the physical host machines installed in the identified cabinets have become available to receive guest VMs for hosting; and

initiating the loading of the guest VMs on the physical host machines responsive to the detecting.

7. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

recursively determining an amount of infrastructure of the distributed computing system used by a plurality of different placement scenarios placing the guest VMs on the physical host machines and placing the physical host machines in cabinets of a distributed computing system to identify one of the plurality of different placement scenarios that satisfies the defined rule for how much infrastructure of the distributed computing system is used.

The method of claim 7, wherein recursively determining an amount of infrastructure of the distributed computing system used by a plurality of different placement scenarios placing the guest VMs on the physical host machines and placing the physical host machines in cabinets of a distributed computing system to identify one of the plurality of different placement scenarios that satisfies the defined rule for how much infrastructure of the distributed computing system is used, comprises:

identifying a pair of the guest VMs that are not allowed to be simultaneously hosted on a same physical host machine; and

controlling generation of the placement scenarios to locate the pair of the guest VMs on different ones of the physical host machines.

The method of claim 7, wherein recursively determining an amount of infrastructure of the distributed computing system used by a plurality of different placement scenarios placing the guest VMs on the physical host machines and placing the physical host machines in cabinets of a distributed computing system to identify one of the plurality of different placement scenarios that satisfies the defined rule for how much infrastructure of the distributed computing system is used, comprises:

recursively determining an amount of electrical power capacity of the cabinets used by the plurality of different placement scenarios to identify one of the plurality of different placement scenarios that satisfies a defined rule for how much electrical power capacity of the cabinets is allowed to be used.

The method of claim 9, wherein recursively determining an amount of electrical power capacity of the cabinets used by the plurality of different placement scenarios to identify one of the plurality of different placement scenarios that satisfies a defined rule for how much electrical power capacity of the cabinets is allowed to be used, comprises:

distributing loading on the electrical power capacity of the cabinets according to a defined electrical power capacity loading rule.

The method of claim 7, wherein recursively determining an amount of infrastructure of the distributed computing system used by a plurality of different placement scenarios placing the guest VMs on the physical host machines and placing the physical host machines in cabinets of a distributed computing system to identify one of the plurality of different placement scenarios that satisfies the defined rule for how much infrastructure of the distributed computing system is used, comprises:

recursively determining an amount of cooling capacity of the cabinets used by the plurality of different placement scenarios to identify one of the plurality of different placement scenarios that satisfies a defined rule for how much cooling capacity of the cabinets is allowed to be used.

The method of claim 11, wherein recursively determining an amount of cooling capacity of the cabinets used by the plurality of different placement scenarios to identify one of the plurality of different placement scenarios that satisfies a defined rule for how much cooling capacity of the cabinets is allowed to be used, comprises:

distributing loading on the cooling capacity of the cabinets according to a defined cooling capacity loading rule.

The method of claim 7, wherein recursively determining an amount of infrastructure of the distributed computing system used by a plurality of different placement scenarios placing the guest VMs on the physical host machines and placing the physical host machines in cabinets of a distributed computing system to identify one of the plurality of different placement scenarios that satisfies the defined rule for how much infrastructure of the distributed computing system is used, comprises:

recursively determining an amount of physical rack storage space of the cabinets used by the plurality of different placement scenarios to identify one of the plurality of different placement scenarios that satisfies a defined rule for how much physical rack storage space of the cabinets is allowed to be used.

14. The method of claim 13, wherein recursively determining an amount of physical rack storage space of the cabinets used by the plurality of different placement scenarios to identify one of the plurality of different placement scenarios that satisfies a defined rule for how much physical rack storage space of the cabinets is allowed to be used, comprises:

distributing the physical host machines among the cabinets to distribute amounts of unused physical rack storage space between the cabinets according to a defined physical rack storage space allocation rule.

15. A resource management node comprising:

a processor; and

a memory coupled to the processor and comprising computer readable program code that when executed by the processor causes the processor to perform operations comprising;

for each of a plurality of guest virtual machines (VMs), determining operational resources of physical host machines available in a distributed computing system that are needed to provide the guest VM;

generating a placement scenario for placing the guest VMs on the physical host machines and placing the physical host machines in cabinets of a distributed computing system;

determining an amount of infrastructure of the distributed computing system used by the placement scenario;

determining whether the placement scenario satisfies a defined rule for how much infrastructure of the distributed computing system can be used; and

initiating placement of the physical host machines in the cabinets and placement of the guest VMs on the physical host machines based on the placement scenario satisfying the defined rule.

16. The resource management node of claim 15, wherein initiating placement of the physical host machines in the cabinets and placement of the guest VMs on the physical host machines based on the placement scenario satisfying the defined rule, comprises:

generating a work order comprising information identifying physical storage locations in cabinets for installation of at least some of the physical host machines by an operator.

17. The resource management node of claim 16, wherein initiating placement of the physical host machines in the cabinets and placement of the guest VMs on the physical host machines based on the placement scenario satisfying the defined rule, further comprises:

detecting that the physical host machines installed in the identified cabinets have become available to receive guest VMs for hosting; and

loading the guest VMs on the physical host machines to initiate hosting of the guest VMs on the physical host machines responsive to the detecting.

18. The resource management node of claim 15, wherein the operations further comprise:

recursively determining an amount of infrastructure of the distributed computing system used by a plurality of different placement scenarios placing the guest VMs on the physical host machines and placing the physical host machines in cabinets of a distributed computing system to identify one of the plurality of different placement scenarios that satisfies the defined rule for how much infrastructure of the distributed computing system is used.

The resource management node of claim 18, wherein recursively determining an amount of infrastructure of the distributed computing system used by a plurality of different placement scenarios placing the guest VMs on the physical host machines and placing the physical host machines in cabinets of a distributed computing system to identify one of the plurality of different placement scenarios that satisfies the defined rule for how much infrastructure of the distributed computing system is used, comprises:

recursively determining an amount of electrical power capacity of the cabinets used by the plurality of different placement scenarios to identify one of the plurality of different placement scenarios that satisfies a defined rule for how much electrical power capacity of the cabinets is allowed to be used

20. A computer program product comprising:

a computer readable storage medium having computer readable program code embodied in the medium, the computer readable program code comprising;

computer readable code to, for each of a plurality of guest virtual machines (VMs), determine operational resources of physical host machines available in a distributed computing system that are needed to provide the guest VM;

computer readable code to generate a placement scenario for placing the guest VMs on the physical host machines and placing the physical host machines in cabinets of a distributed computing system;

computer readable code to determine an amount of infrastructure of the distributed computing system used by the placement scenario;

computer readable code to determine whether the placement scenario satisfies a defined rule for how much infrastructure of the distributed computing system can be used; and

computer readable code to initiate placement of the physical host machines in the cabinets and placement of the guest VMs on the physical host machines based on the placement scenario satisfying the defined rule.
