Abstract

In a coordinated multipoint system, geographically distributed base transceiver stations employ overlapping coverage areas in a Radio Access Network (RAN) to serve multiple User Equipments (UEs). A fronthaul network communicatively couples the base transceiver stations to a central processor. The central processor comprises a cooperative multiple-input, multiple-output (MIMO) processor configured to select multiple antennas residing on multiple ones of the base transceiver stations to serve each of the UEs; compute baseband pre-coding weights for signals to be transmitted by the antennas, the baseband pre-coding weights computed from RAN channel state information between the antennas and the UEs; and coordinate transmissions of pre-coded signals from the antennas to exploit multipath in the RAN to coherently combine at each of the UEs. Since each UE can be provided with its own localized coherence zone, this enables the UEs to concurrently employ the same frequency spectrum.

Claims

1. A central processor, comprising:

a fronthaul network transceiver communicatively coupled to a plurality of geographically distributed base transceiver stations via a fronthaul network, the base transceiver stations configured to employ overlapping coverage areas in a Radio Access Network (RAN) to serve a plurality of User Equipments (UEs); and

a cooperative Multiple-Input, Multiple-Output (MIMO) processor configured for;

selecting a plurality of antennas residing on multiple ones of the plurality of base transceiver stations to serve each of the plurality of UEs;

computing baseband pre-coding weights for signals to be transmitted by the plurality of antennas, the baseband pre-coding weights computed from RAN channel state information between the plurality of antennas and the plurality of UEs; and

coordinating transmissions of pre-coded signals from the plurality of antennas to exploit multipath in the RAN to coherently combine at each of the plurality of UEs.

2. The central processor recited in claim 1, wherein at least one of the RAN channel state information and the pre-coding weights are computed using at least one of calibrated techniques and non-calibrated techniques.

The central processor recited in claim 1, wherein the Cooperative-MIMO processor is further configured for at least one of receiving the RAN channel state information estimated at the plurality of UEs and fed back to the plurality of geographically distributed base transceiver stations, receiving the RAN channel state information derived at the geographically distributed base transceiver stations from signals transmitted by the plurality of UEs, and receiving the RAN channel state information derived at the central processor.

4. The central processor recited in claim 1, wherein the baseband pre-coding weights are computed to pre-cancel multi-UE interference at each of the plurality of UEs.

5. The central processor recited in claim 1, wherein computing the baseband pre-coding weights comprises employing at least one of linear pre-coding and non-linear pre-coding.

6. The central processor recited in claim 1, comprising at least one of the plurality of geographically distributed base transceiver stations.

The central processor recited in claim 1, wherein at least one of the plurality of UEs, the plurality of geographically distributed base transceiver stations, and the central processor comprises a blind-adaptive processor configured to compute the RAN channel state information based on at least one of estimates of transmitted data and a known property of a transmitted data signal.

8. The central processor recited in claim 1, comprising a software-defined radio equipped with programmable computational capability configured to perform baseband signal processing.

9. The central processor recited in claim 8, wherein the software-defined radio is configured to perform processing for multiple layers of a protocol stack for at least one transmission protocol.

10. The central processor recited in claim 8, wherein the software-defined radio resides on a distributed computing system.

The central processor recited in claim 1, wherein the cooperative-MIMO processor is configured to adapt at least one of selecting the plurality of antennas, computing the baseband pre-coding weights, and coordinating the transmissions with respect to at least one of changing RAN channel conditions, changing UE locations, and changing base transceiver station locations.

12. The central processor recited in claim 1, wherein the cooperative MIMO processor is further configured for:

collecting RAN signals received by the plurality of antennas;

computing baseband spatial demultiplexing weights for the RAN signals, the baseband spatial demultiplexing weights computed from the RAN channel state information; and

combining weighted RAN signals to exploit multipath in the RAN to separate interfering UE transmissions received by the plurality of antennas.

13. The central processor recited in claim 1, further comprising a RAN transceiver comprising at least one antenna configured for at least one of transmitting RF signals into the RAN and receiving RF signals from the RAN.

14. A base transceiver station, comprising:

a radio access network (RAN) transceiver comprising at least one antenna configured to transmit radio-frequency (RF) signals into the RAN and receive RF signals from the RAN;

at least one fronthaul interface that communicatively couples the base transceiver station to a fronthaul network;

a channel state processing system configured to communicate RAN channel state information from the base transceiver station to a central processor via the fronthaul network; and

a cooperative multiple-input, multiple-output (MIMO) processor configured to receive pre-coded RAN signals from the central processor via the fronthaul network, and configured by the central processor in coordination with at least one other base transceiver station to concurrently transmit the pre-coded RAN signals exploit multipath in the RAN to coherently combine with transmissions from the at least one other base transceiver station at each of a plurality of User Equipments (UEs).

15. The base transceiver station recited in claim 14, further comprising at least one of a timing reference receiver and a clock configured for use in regulating timing of signal-processing operations.

The base transceiver station recited in claim 14, wherein the channel state processing system comprises at least one of a channel estimator configured to calculate the RAN channel state information by measuring training signals transmitted in the RAN, and a relay configured for relaying the RAN channel state information determined by the plurality of UEs to the central processor.

17. The base transceiver station recited in claim 14, wherein the at least one fronthaul interface comprises at least one of an optical fiber interface, a wireline interface, a radio interface, and a wireless optical interface.

18. The base transceiver station recited in claim 14, wherein the channel state processing system is configured to compute the RAN channel state information using at least one of calibrated techniques and non-calibrated techniques.

19. The base transceiver station recited in claim 14, wherein the channel state processing system comprises a blind-adaptive processor configured to compute the RAN channel state information based on at least one of estimated transmitted data and a known property of a transmitted data signal.

20. A system, comprising:

a plurality of geographically distributed base transceiver stations configured to employ overlapping coverage areas in a Radio Access Network (RAN) to serve a plurality of User Equipments (UEs);

a fronthaul network communicatively coupling the plurality of geographically distributed base transceiver stations to a central processor; and

the central processor comprising a cooperative multiple-input, multiple-output (MIMO) processor configured for;

selecting a plurality of antennas residing on multiple ones of the plurality of base transceiver stations to serve each of the plurality of UEs;

computing baseband pre-coding weights for signals to be transmitted by the plurality of antennas, the baseband pre-coding weights computed from RAN channel state information between the plurality of antennas and the plurality of UEs; and

coordinating transmissions of pre-coded signals from the plurality of antennas to exploit multipath in the RAN to coherently combine at each of the plurality of UEs.

21. The system recited in claim 20, wherein at least one of the central processor, the plurality of geographically distributed base transceiver stations, and the plurality of UEs is configured to calculate the RAN channel state information.

22. The system recited in claim 20, wherein the central processor comprises at least one a set, the set comprising at least one of the plurality of the UEs and at least one of the plurality of geographically distributed base transceiver stations.

The system recited in claim 20, wherein the cooperative-MIMO processor is configured to adapt at least one of selecting the plurality of antennas, computing the baseband pre-coding weights, and coordinating the transmissions with respect to at least one of changing RAN channel conditions, changing UE locations, and changing base transceiver station locations.

24. The system recited in claim 20, wherein the cooperative MIMO processor is further configured for:

collecting RAN signals received by the plurality of antennas;

computing baseband spatial demultiplexing weights for the RAN signals, the baseband spatial demultiplexing weights computed from the RAN channel state information; and

combining weighted baseband RAN signals to exploit multipath in the RAN to separate interfering UE transmissions received by the plurality of antennas.

25. The system recited in claim 20, wherein the central processor comprises a software-defined radio platform programmed to support a plurality of transmission protocols.

26. The system recited in claim 20, wherein the central processor comprises a distributed computing system.
