Abstract

A method for selecting a channel in a wireless local area network, and a device therefore. The method according to one embodiment includes receiving an extended quiet interval element from an access point. The extended quiet interval element indicates that at least one of a primary channel and a secondary channel is to be quieted during a quiet interval for a radar detection. The method according to the embodiment includes quieting the indicated channel during the quiet interval.

Claims

1. A method for selecting a channel in a wireless local area network, the method comprising:

receiving an extended quiet interval element from an access point, wherein the extended quiet interval element indicates that at least one of a primary channel and a secondary channel is to be quieted during a quiet interval for a radar detection; and

quieting the indicated channel during the quiet interval.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the extended quiet interval element is received when an operating bandwidth of the access point is greater than 40 MHz.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein the operating bandwidth is a total bandwidth of the primary channel and the secondary channel.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein the primary channel and the secondary channel have same bandwidths that are greater than 40 MHz.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the extended quiet interval element indicates that the secondary channel is to be quieted during the quiet interval but the primary channel is not to be quieted during the quiet interval.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the extended quiet interval element includes a quiet duration indicating a duration of the quiet interval.

7. A device for a wireless local area network, the device comprising:

a transceiver configured to receive and transmit radio signals; and

a processor operatively coupled with the transceiver and configured to;

instruct the transceiver to receive an extended quiet interval element from an access point, wherein the extended quiet interval element indicates that at least one of a primary channel and a secondary channel is to be quieted during a quiet interval for a radar detection, and

instruct the transceiver to quiet the indicated channel during the quiet interval.

8. The device of claim 7, wherein the extended quiet interval element is received when an operating bandwidth of the access point is greater than 40 MHz.

9. The device of claim 8, wherein the operating bandwidth is a total bandwidth of the primary channel and the secondary channel.

10. The device of claim 9, wherein the primary channel and the secondary channel have same bandwidths that are greater than 40 MHz.

11. The device of claim 7, wherein the extended quiet interval element indicates that the secondary channel is to be quieted during the quiet interval but the primary channel is not to be quieted during the quiet interval.

12. The device of claim 7, wherein the extended quiet interval element includes a quiet duration indicating a duration of the quiet interval.
